I’m a huge fan of this place. Been here numerous times both for brunch and dinner. Love the location of this restaurant – Hayes Valley is one of my favorite neighborhoods in SF. Here are a few must tries on their menu: Brunch: Shigoku Oysters, Sea Urchin, Chicken Liver Terrine, Frisee Salad(super good with poached eggs!) Dinner: Bone Marrow(their bread is also very good, you’re gonna have to order extra, and that bacon marmalade is just ughhhh, so good!), Steak Frites, and the Escargot! Pricey but def worth every penny!

Very mixed review of the food mostly because of seasoning problems — some dishes(flounder, cassoulet) overly salted while others(blanquette of veal) needed lots more salt. Unlike many restaurants we noticed that each table did have salt shakers so at least they were aware of those needing it. Some items(sweetbreads) were just perfect and well executed. We had an early dinner and the noise level was not too bad at first but by about 6:30 it became impossible to hold a conversation. I guess that’s the norm now but beware.

Amazing night hanging out with my cousin here! If you love French food, this is definitely a spot you can’t miss. I got escargots to start, duck breast to devour, and ice cream to finish. And also a glass of Sauvignon Blanc to pair! Overall a very satisfying meal in a modern-looking French restaurant.

This update review is for brunch — which was, well, kind of sad. It WAS Valentines’ Day and it WAS at the end of service(kitchen closes at 2:30, our reservation was for 2 pm, one person in our party drove and had trouble finding parking so was 15 minutes late). However, the problems we experienced were probably not solely because of the late hour on a busy Sunday. One person had chicken croquette — which was not a croquette at all but a spongy textured chicken cutlet-like thing. It was bland, and it was horrible. It was $ 18. Two of us had burgers — the burgers were very good and the reason why this update is 3 stars and not one. The burgers come with fries — a lot of fries. We ordered an extra order of fries for the table, but the server did not bother to warn us away from that — there were a TON of fries on that table. But, they were lukewarm at best, pale & bland. Most of the fries went uneaten. Nobody said anything about that either. Overall I still like this place BUT I would probably choose something else for brunch(at least unless things change). HOPEFULLY it already has, as you see my Valentine’s Day review was still in drafts and not posted till June …

Such a great spot! It’s bustling, the servers are hustling and everyone has a great personality. Right down to the people sitting next to you. The ladies seated near us, though quiet at first, were in love with the fact that I spoke a little French with our server. All of a sudden they were our new besties. «oh you should get this,» «oh, this dish was soo good!» This is my second time dining at Monsieur Benjamin within 30 days. 1st visit My friend and I selected a variety of items from the menu — Foie Gras au Torchon with Melba Toast and Pistachios. Like butter. Ah! Amazing with the toast. — Steamed Mussels. The broth is perfection! — Potato & Leek Croquettes with Gruyère and Herb Crème Fraîche. Moist and delicious. — Asparagus with Hollandaise. A little over cooked for me. I prefer al dente. — Gáteau Marjolaine with Hazelnut, Prailine, Crème Anglaise. Fabulous!!! There is enough for two to share. Rich and creamy and is not overpowered by the hazelnut. I had a glass of Calvados to wash it down. 2nd visit With a different friend who is gluten-free, we chose the — Foie Gras Poêlé. I hadn’t had foie gras prepared in this manner before. While the flavors were very nice, I can’t say I was a fan of the texture of the foie gras. It wasn’t bad. I prefer it in its more spreadable, delicate form. Her main course — The Duck Confit. I had a sampling. Super moist, the glaze wasn’t too sweet and the skin was lightly crisp. My main course — The Blanquette de Veau with Paris Mushrooms, Pearl Onions and Steam Potatoes. Apparently it’s summertime here, but you wouldn’t know because of the chilly weather and grey skies. A creamy dish seemed appropriate. Besides you can’t pass on pearl onions when available. I am so glad I ordered it! The veal was tender, succulent in bite size pieces. No knife needed. The cream sauce was delicious on its own. In fact I used the fresh bread, also soft and tasty, to wipe my plate of the left over sauce. On both occasions the Beaujolaise Régnié 2013 was a perfect accompaniment to the plates. Our server returned to our table to refill our glasses multiple times without interrupting our conversation. A special mention must go to the service. Perfect, perfect, perfect! French staff in a French restaurant. Smart. I wish more so called French restaurants would do that in SF. On both occasions our servers were polite, obliged to our every request as if we were ultra special guests. In fact one of the servers from my 1st visit came to greet me and welcome me back again!

Great ambiance but the food was just okay. Me and two of my friends had a birthday dinner here another night. We ordered: — Daily Special Salad — Seafood Sausage — Chicken Liver Pâté — Escargot — Beef Tongue Dijonnaise — Bone Marrow — Flounder — Bottle of Wine Total with tip was about $ 270. Not bad, but not good either. I totally get the sq. foot rental cost and everything else, but the only thing we all liked was the salad and the bone marrow, and if you had bone marrow before, you know — it is a teaspoon size bite! So out of everything we ordered one teaspoon of enjoyable and memorable food, that’s a bit disappointing. Would I come back? — I don’t think so. But thank you for having us!

I took my boyfriend here for his birthday and made reservations a month beforehand. The restaurant layout was beautiful and I love the open kitchen view. The staff were super nice, thoughtful and had great recommendations! True professionals! We ordered: Sea Urchin with White Verjus: So yummy! Delicious, it’s not your typical uni from a Japanese restaurant, the flavor of this uni is to die for. Streak Tartare: LOVE! This is some of the best steak tartare I have had. Foie Gras au Torchon: Can’t go wrong with duck liver, smooth and bread was crispy and delicious Escargots Bordelaise: MMM buttery and it was still sizzling when it was brought to the table. Duck Confit: Pretty good, cooked well and crispy skin Quail: Must order! So delicious, crispy and stuffing is great! Overall experience and food was all 5 stars. I highly recommend this place. It’s definitely a good treat ;)

TL;DR — Four star dinner experience, one star brunch experience; even it out to two and a half stars overall? Vibes: I LOVE the open kitchen. I LOVE the interior(clean and spacious). I LOVE the bright natural lighting. Lets start with the bad(yes, I’m that kind of person) –BRUNCH– We chose the worst day ever to have brunch here; mother’s day. The wait was pretty long, but we strolled around the neighborhood and grabbed some caffeine to pass the time so this part wasn’t terrible. Service: The hostess was great and friendly, I mean, there’s nothing she can due about the influx of diners, but she handled everything very well. Our server on the other hand? Rude and absent. It took us 10 minutes to get waters. When she finally came to take our orders, she didn’t even make eye contact. She rushed off and our food didn’t show up for a good 35 minutes. After that, she never came back to check on us and we had to ask for the check. I get that its busy… but I was still kind of irked(especially at the prices of the dishes here, you’d expect better). Food: We had the Oeufs en Muerette(basically duck hash with spinach and mushrooms) and scrambled eggs with sausage. The duck confit was more dry than the Sahara and so stringy and chewy. I left most of it on the plate(again, our server failed to even note or ask the reason my plate was still full). The eggs were good, but its pretty much impossible to mess up scrambled eggs and sausage too much. –DINNER– Friday night and the place was pretty packed, we ended up sitting at a table in the back close to the order window so there was a crazy amount of foot traffic, but thats ok. Service: Again, not super inviting, but at least our waiter was friendly this time. Drinks: We started with the way back when(gin cocktail) and the ace(rye cocktail); both were strong and flavoured well. We also had the pinot noir and some cab blend?(I’m not too good with wines haha) Food: We ordered — foie au torchon($ 22) meh, not my favorite part of the meal… the foie was seared a little too much and ruined a bit of the texture — bone marrow($ 18) I love marrow, so definitely a win for me. — arctic char armandine($ 34) not super memorable but I love haricots verts so that made me happy — roast chicken($ 28) normally, I don’t order chicken, but wow, this dish was super tasty and the chicken was cooked perfectly. — lemon tart($ 10) no meal is complete without dessert and the lemon tart was absolutely perfect with the mint Overall, come for dinner. Pass on brunch(there are better options out there). Expect to spend quite a bite. Don’t hold your breath for good service.

I’ve been wanting to try this place since they first opened, and I finally had a chance recently since we were going to watch a show afterwards. We had an early reservation, everything came out at a timely matter, and we had enough time to leisurely stroll to the Orpheum. We started off with the potato and leek croquettes, 4 pieces of bite sized potato/leek filling with a crunchy exterior. Definitely small but at $ 7.50 the price isn’t too bad. For my main entrée I ordered the duck confit. I love duck, and was pleasantly surprised they gave such a big duck leg. It was tender and delicious, and did I say it was big? I don’t know where they get their ducks from, but it was big and so worth the price. We ended dessert with the lemon tart. The waiter had said it was big enough of a slice for two, but really, it’s a small slice, and it was too good for it to be shared.

Monsieur Benjamin offers a very nice dining experience. I came here with a party of eight for dinner on a Monday evening. I was impressed with the intimate, and relaxed atmosphere. The dining room has an open kitchen concept, and a nice view of Gough Street, within a quaint area in Hayes Valley. The staff at Monsieur Benjamin is friendly, professional, and knowledgeable of the menu. Several individuals from the staff were attentive to our table throughout the night; offering wine recommendations, asking about our experience, and making sure we always had what we needed. It was a pleasant, enjoyable evening. One member of our party pre-selected a 3-course menu, from which we were able to choose from several options. We were given a choice of an appetizer, a main course, and a dessert. We also ordered two bottles of wine, and a few additional small bites. The bottles were a 2011 Graves, Respide-Medeville and a 2012 Cotes du Rhone, Domaine Gris des Bauries, les Chaix. For small bites, we had the potato and leek croquettes, the oeufs mayonnaise pimenton chervil, and the seafood grand plateau(oysters, shrimp, sea urchin, and mussels). The seafood platter was particularly noteworthy. The presentation was excellent, and the variety was great. I especially enjoyed trying sea urchin for the first time. The oeufs mayonnaise pimenton chervil(deviled eggs) were very rich, with a strong flavor of Dijon. The flavor was a bit too strong for me, but still well prepared. The croquettes were exceptional as well. From the three course menu, I chose the following: Appetizer: Marrow Bones«Blue Ribbon» with Bacon Marmalade and Country Bread Main: Choucroute Garnie(Pork Rib, Belly, and Boudin Blanc) Dessert: Gâteau Marjolaine(Hazelnut, Praline, Crème Anglaise) with mint tea To me, the appetizer and the dessert were the highlights of the meal. The bone marrow paired particularly well with the bacon marmalade and the country bread. The flavors complemented each other nicely to produce a full, rich flavor. The Gâteau Marjolaine paired well with the mint tea. It was the perfect way to finish off the meal. The main course was good, but was not a highlight of the meal for me. The pork, sausage, and potatoes were well prepared, although I would have liked to have had more potatoes. Most of the dishes seemed to place an emphasis on the meat. Others at the table ordered the roast chicken and the beef short rib, and their dishes followed the same pattern(mostly meat, and a small amount of vegetables). This was one area of the meal I felt could have been better. Although Monsieur Benjamin may not be the best dining experience in SF, it is certainly a very good one. The atmosphere, more than anything, is what impressed me. The service was very good, and the restaurant had a relaxing vibe to it. We enjoyed out meal, had a great time, and left satisfied. Sometimes, that’s all you can ask for.

Birthday celebration continues. Monsieur Benjamin is right on Gough in the center of Hayes Valley, great location. The restaurant has glass walls all around, open kitchen, hanging old fashion light bulbs, black wooden chairs and tables. Very modern but yet gives you a good classic touch. And yesterday I finally got to try this place, a placed I bookmarked since they opened. The menu looked amazing. My friend and I wanted everything but we both had our hearts set on the seared foie gras but their vendor didn’t supply them with it last night. I was heart broken. But the menu was big therefore it was not hard to pick something else. **Seafood Sausage was suggested by our server therefore we gave it a try. Especially we never had a seafood sausage before. This turned out to my least favorite of the night. My friend felt the same way. I think its the texture and the lacking something. It had that snap when your eat it but the texture inside is very odd from what I am use to. It’s not very flavorful too. **Steak Tartare — Egg Yolk! It’s not one yolk in the middle or a certain sharp. Its not a traditional looking beef tartare. It was very good. A lot of flavor. And the chips that came with it went really well together. Not bread which was very good and different. **Escargots Bordelaise — Mushroom Duxelles, Garlic, Parsley was my favorite appetizer of the night. It was DELICIOUS. Comes smoking hot, therefore be careful when you take that bite. It’s full of flavor and extremely tasty. Of course, the reminding of the sauce, we dipped in the bread they gave us. YUM! **Quail a la Chasseur was very good. Stuffed, juicily, tender and flavorful. Better than the one from Gary Danko but not as good as the one at Prospect. Definitely recommended! **Duck Confit and Sausage, wasn’t dry at all. It has good flavor. One big piece of duck leg. I didn’t see any sausage but my friend said it was there but it was cut up. I guess depending on the cook, they plate or cook it slightly different? We got a side of the **Pommes Frites with Aioli dipping sauce. The fries were good but I think we got the end of the that patch. A lot of shorts ones. It had enough flavor and good crisp. The aioli was very good. We ended the night with the **Lemon Tart with Mint Chantilly. It was very good. Not too tart and not too sweet. Perfect for my taste buds. Saving the BEST for the last. As many reviews did mention the **Palmier Ice Cream — Calvados Caramel was amazing. The Palmier cookie bites are so good. I really can eat this ice cream everyday. You have to get this, RECOMMENDED! Monsieur Benjamin was pretty good. Everything was delicious even my moscow mule. Service was good. Definitely coming back and mush try their brunch as well.

26th Birthday Dinner Numero Tres — Underwhelming at best This was the dinner I booked on my actual birthday aka the most important dinner! I saw this place open and was dying to go ever since! Finally had a good excuse. It looks really different once your inside with a huge trendy LA looking bar right in the middle with an open kitchen. Actually looks really fun to sit there. Our table was packed into the other tables until 20 minutes later where the waiter finally scooted the table next to us and said our table was actually a 4 top earlier so they hadn’t fully separated the tables. We also showed up on time for our reservation and still had to wait because they didn’t have menus printed out yet. You’d think they would be more prepared for a Saturday night dinner. Crowd was a mix of suits, bros in tshirts, and a surprising amount of families with their kids. We ordered the famous seafood sausage and bone marrow and ate it with lots of bread galore. The bread for the marrow is actually the same as the complimentary bread but just toasted. The appetizers were great and dinner started off on such a high note so it was extra bizarre when we were served our $ 30+ entrees that looked like something from a senior living facility. It just looked so sad to the point where my friends commented on the plating when I sent them pics of my birthday dinner before I even said anything. It was that obvious! Maybe we just ordered the ugliest dishes. My flounder was good but it as just flounder and some very boiled asparagus and everything started to taste the same by the end and I couldn’t even finish. Dessert was not bad. Got a slice of their layered cake. Service was very average. I wish they would crumb our table because it was seriously filthy by the end of the meal. They use these disposable table covers so maybe thats why they don’t care how dirty it gets throughout the meal. Oh there were also crumbs on my seat when I first sat down and they poked at my bare thighs. Step up your game Monsieur Benjamin.

Appetizers are 4 stars but I just didn’t enjoy the cassoulet. For appetizers, we shared the foie gras, terrine, beef tongue and bone marrow. While all were good, the bone marrow was by far my favorite. You can really never go wrong with that buttery goodness and the bacon marmalade on the side. For the main, my friend asked the waiter between the duck confit and the cassoulet which had some duck confit in it as well. Waiter recommended cassoulet so I went with it. Regret. Regret! Should have gotten the duck confit which had so much rave reviews on Unilocal!Cassoulet was mostly beans, lots and lots of filling beans and a total of 2 pieces of duck and 2 pieces of sausage that were both petty bland. With so many other restaurants to try, it may be a while before I come back again.

Thought this was a great place to bring a colleague from Switzerland. –One of the fancier French bistros in the city –Ease and availability of reservations –Ease of parking(performing arts garage literally across the street) –Great modern looking décor in a hip and easily walkable neighborhood –Vibe and atmosphere that’s not too formal but casual enough, hit that sweet spot. –Kinda tired of going to Epic and Waterbar #firstworldproblems All the classics on the menu: cassoulet, duck confit, foie gras, steak frites, etc. Here’s what we had. ACE $ 12 — rye calvados, sloe gin, honey, lemon and rosemary. Smooth and balanced all around. SEAFOODSAUSAGE — $ 17.50(4⁄5) A blend of lobster, scallop, shrimp, and seabass in this natural casing. Good snap! Served with this awesome beurre rouge(red wine and butter sauce). I appreciated that it didn’t flake away into fish scraps once cut into. SWEETBREADSGRENOBLAISE — $ 18(4⁄5) — The light and crisp battered crust along with the silky smooth texture and mild chicken flavor reminded me of one of my all time favorite foods, Chicken McNuggets! It’d be so awesome if they bypassed the classic caper/lemon sauce and gave me some spruced up version of Sweet n Sour, Honey Mustard, and Tangy BBQ sauce! MUSSELS w/garlic sausage — $ 16(2.75÷5) — Garlic sausage reminded me of chorizo with it’s bite. I really liked their crusty and charred bread to sop the flavorful broth. Only thing was that the mussels were more on the tiny side and not as plump and juicy as in other French bistros(Plouf, Chez Maman, Gamine, Le Charm, etc) ARTICCHARARMANDINE — $ 34(3.5÷5) — Perfectly cooked. I thought the thin layer of toasted almonds and butter sauce overpowered the already subtle flavor of the char. I guess I just prefer my fish sashimi style. Not in a rush to go back. The food was solid but nothing I need to have again. A good place to have in your back pocket for a fancier date night or cocktails in Hayes Valley.

I’ve been dying to go to MB for so long but it’s impossible to get reservations. I find French restaurants way too traditional or too decadent — but MB struck a perfect balance of modern elegance, staying true to its rich French roots, but offering a diverse menu of delicious dishes and cocktails. A pricey but perfect date night location — can’t wait to return! * PATE($ 14.50) — 4.5STARS: So decadent and delicious and served with a thick cut of toasted brioche, cornichons, and a very delicious mustard sauce. The brioche was nice and light and a perfect complement to the pâté. * BONEMARROW($ 18) — 4.5STARS: We lucked out and got two huge bones of bone marrow, not like the tiny bones at Roka Akor. Super buttery and fatty — perfection! Served with several huge slices of fresh grilled country bread. * BEEFTONGUE($ 14) — 3STARS: This was definitely not what I expected when I ordered it. The tongue was a very thick slice, not super charred or BBQ’ed as you might expect at an Asian restaurant. It’s topped with a gravy like sauce and served with rye toast bites. It was interesting, not my favorite preparation of beef tongue. * ARTICCHAR($ 28.50) — 2.5STARS A nice fresh fish, covered in a very thick, buttery gravy like sauce and topped with chopped nuts and served over buttery green beans. While this seemed very traditional French, it was way too rich for my taste. * STEAKFRITES($ 42) — 4STARS: The steak was perfectly cooked and very delicious. The fries were addictive. $ 42 though for this portion seemed a bit overpriced. * PALMIERICECREAM($ 8) — 5STARS: This tasted like it had toffee or crème brûlée bits inside. 3 scoops of super rich and creamy, pure decadence — save room!

Came here on a random Monday because my gf had the night off and we wanted to splurge a little on food so we decided to try out Monsieur Benjamin. We made a reservation at 8:30 and am I glad we did because they were pretty damn busy, even on a Monday night! Of course this restaurant is owned by the same renowned chef of Benu so I expected there would be plenty of patrons even on a typically slow day. Anyways, when we got there, there was a table ready for us so that’s definitely a good sign. When we sat down, we were promptly greeted by a waiter who had a slight French accent that was pretty informative about the menu and had helped my gf decide on a wine selection. For our dinner my gf ordered the flounder and I selected several appetizers so that we can have a taste of everything. If I can recall, I ordered the bone marrow, beef tartare, mussels, and one more dish that I forgot. Everything tasted very good but I think the standout dish was definitely the mussels. We both agreed that it was cooked perfectly, almost to the point where it tasted more like oysters instead of mussels.(Yes it was that good). The only thing that we had a slight issue with was the flounder because it was slightly on the salty side, but other than that, everything else was pretty damn good. And for that, Monsieur Benjamin deserves a solid 4 – 4.5 stars.

As the sister restaurant to the three michelin star restaurant Benu, you can be sure to expect excellent service, food and drink. I’ve dined at Monsieur Benjamin a few times now, and every time is better than the last. Situated on bustling Gough st., the floor to ceiling glass walls are modern, and clean. The place is always packed and reservations are tough. My favorite… grabbing a bar seat post dinner rush around 9pm. On my last occasion(2÷12÷16), I sat at the bar once again and was promptly attended to. The service is so on point here. I ordered a decently priced bottle of 2010 White Burgundy($ 75), which is my favorite region on the planet and pairs fantastic with French food. Outstanding. As for the food, all 5 stars. Croquettes: fired to perfection. Iberia Ham: sliced thinly. Chicken Liver Terrine: served with a brioche bread that was just silly. Steak Frites: one of the best ribeyes I’ve had in town accompanied by a towering plate of fries. Do yourself a favor and check this place out. It ain’t cheap, but if you’re a fan of French cuisine it’s unmissable in SF.

Came here for a birthday dinner and easily got reservations for 7pm. The restaurant is very trendy with minimalistic décor and low lighting. Great for an intimate dinner with friends or a significant other. There’s a communal table in the middle for larger group or multiple small parties as well as limited bar seating and some outdoor tables along the sidewalk. When I walked in, I already knew what I wanted for all three courses. But as a group, we tasted a bit of everything: Sweetbread Grenobloise(5 stars): fried crisp to perfection with the inside nice and tender without being too tough and chewy. This sweetbread is some of the best I’ve had and was paired with a nice buttery sauce, onions and capers that gave it that extra bite. The portions are small but we split it 4-ways and each of us went back to dip the sweetbread in the brown butter. Seafood Sausage(3.5 stars): this came recommended by our waiter and it really was just a sausage made with different types of seafood. I guess it was good? But for some reason I expected something other than your typical sausage. We cut it up and it’s definitely made some real seafood chunks and not random bits and pieces, which is nice. Perhaps if you really like seafood you’ll enjoy this, but it wasn’t particularly memorable. Quail a la Chasseur(5 stars): whoa! the presentation. This is a smallish, but whole quail that’s presented in quite the display with the legs in the air and feet crossed. Sitting on a bed of shredded cabbage with a boat of gravy, this quail is cooked to perfection with its golden skin and tender meat. It was juicy but not oily and the flavors present in each bite. Duck confit(4.5 stars): This duck was huge! Probably the largest portion of duck confit I’ve seen. Despite this, the meat was falling off the bone, though some of the outer meat a bit harder than I would have liked. Additionally, rather than being really fatty, this duck was a bit leaner so it kind of like eating a light red meat. The sauce was a perfect compliment and I would certainly recommend it. Choucroute Garnie(4 stars): both the pork rib and belly were cooked well. The pork belly was a good ratio of fatty to lean meat and was quite tender opposed to being overly tough as I’ve often found in western style cooking. There was also some sausage which was solid as far as sausages come. Artic Char Amandine(4 stars): The fish was soft and tendor and cooked just to the right level. It was light in flavor and the thick layer of shaved almonds was a nice touch, kind of like a variation on an almond crusted filet. Last but not least, a must have… Palmier Ice Cream(5 stars): If you’re one of those«why get ice cream at a restaurant??» type of person, forget that and at least try it here. The Palmier ice cream with it’s vanilla base is rich and creamy with bits of caramel and Palmier cookie bits giving it a nice crunch with every bite. This was definitely ice cream that I could eat over and over.

Ok, I’ve been back a handful of times since my last review, though every time it’s for brunch, but there’s a reason for that! This has become one of my go-to brunch spots with friends and I’ll tell you why: 1) good, reliable food 2) excellent service 3) a beautiful setting/restaurant 4) in a hip neighborhood and last but not least 5) takes reservations. With all my past visits, I’ve had most of their brunch items. My favorites by far are: PARISHAM and MUSSELS. How do they and how do they make that ham so juicy and tender and the 3 lettuces that it comes with is just so sweet and juicy. Those mussels those mussels are all so tender and juicy, the soup has good fresh seafood flavor. COFFEE here is always very nice, I love my own little jog of coffee to pour out whenever I want to so that I can keep my cup warm(I don’t like cold coffee unless it’s iced!). SO… Brunch is always enjoyable here. Not to mention I really like the little fox logo on there dishes and how the nice the neighborhood has become over the years. One day, I will come back for dinner, since I’ve only had dinner once here. Really want that fresh uni in my belly!
