I know what you’re thinking, Mexican at Pier 39, it must be terrible or a step above Chipotle. Truth be told, I’ve been here a few times, always with a Groupon might I add and I’ve never been disappointed. The reviews are all over the place with some people really enjoying what Mango’s offers while others label it as a tourist trap. Sure enough, its no authentic San Francisco taqueria but it’s damn good for a Mexican spot in one of the most visited tourist attractions in the country. If I remember correctly, I’ve been here three times and my most recent visit was on a Saturday night for an early dinner. Given that it was about 6:30pm, I expected to have to wait for a table but we were quickly seated. The dining room was busy but it wasn’t packed, which was more thank okay with us. I already had an idea of what I wanted and so did my +1 but we gave the menu a glance over as our waiter took our drink order and brought over some chips. Mango’s has all your usual Mexican staples and the menu is broken into appetizers, soups and salads, a la carte, combination plates, specials and fajitas. I order my usual which is a three taco plate with rice and beans($ 14.95). As far as proteins, I chose to try their carne asada, pollo asado and their al pastor. I try and skip the extra fat when I go to a taqueria and order pinto beans over refried and today was no different. My +1 ordered the fajita trio, a $ 20 plate that includes grilled vegetables, rice and beans, salsa, and your choice of tortillas. Just as we were finishing our chips and salsa, a sizzling cast iron with a mountain of grilled veggies, steak, chicken and shrimp was set on the table. As much as my mouth salivated, I anxiously waited for my taco platter to arrive. Moments later my taco plate arrived and I immediately began to dig in. The meat was tender, juicy and full of flavor across the board. If I had to choose a favorite protein, it would probably be the carne asada. However, the real winner was the fajitas. After getting to try a few bites, it was clear to me that was the clear winner. Every bite was full of flavor and more importantly didn’t feel fatty or greasy. Mango’s isn’t for everyone. In a city such as San Francisco, you have dozens, maybe hundreds of authentic Mexican taquerias to choose from, but for what Mango’s is, it works for me. Sure, it’s touristy, it may not be the most authentic, but to me its vastly superior to anything you’ll get at a Chiptole or Rubio’s. Service has always been decent, prices are a bit on the high side, but take into consideration where you are: Pier 39 in San Francisco, California. Ambiance/Décor: 3⁄5 Food: 4⁄5 Service: 3⁄5 Price: $$ Overall: 4⁄5 Pros: + Large menu with everything you might expect from a taqueria + Food is full of flavorful and portions are generous + Fast and friendly service + Outdoor patio + Full bar + Voucher deals can be found on Groupon almost regularly Cons: — Pricey

Thought this would be a good Mexican place to check out. Not so much. I had the red sauce enchilada. My friends had the mango burrito. Ordered a house margarita, which was horrible. Black beans and rice had no flavor. Service was mediocre. Food was bland and luke warm. This is a tourist trap.

We came in at about 11;30 — early lunch. The place was not to crowded and we were easily seated with a bay view. — Very nice — the waiter got our drinks — salsa and chips and we were started. The fajita combo came out sizzling and satisfying. Street tacos were nice, tasty and enough for me. I noticed the free Mango Salsa with check in and the waiter brought that promptly. Yep is is a bit more expensive out here on Pier 39, that is the way it is. Keep your eye and mind on lunch and enjoy it it the dense crowd of the pier. We and our friends from japan had a wonderful time.

Went here earlier tonight and loved it! The location was absolutely amazing and I wish it was warmer so we could’ve sat on the patio! I got the carne burrito and it was good, but the carne in my opinion could’ve been cooked a little more & Steven got the carne three tacos and that was good, especially the beans and rice!

Overall location was great, but food was just ok. Wasn’t good, wasn’t bad. Expensive for what it is. If I pay over $ 20 for Fajitas, I expect some Guac and toppings, not just an ounce of sour cream and some beans and rice. Service wasn’t exceptional, but wasn’t the worse we have had. Margarita came in a pint glass, which threw me off. Was expecting a margarita, in a margarita glass. Not some cheap pre mix in a pint glass. I felt disappointed by its location and what it was. I felt they could have done much better with the seating and atmosphere with the views. Just a plain old Mexican food restaurant that is over priced. Was going to give 3 starts, then remembered how I thought«well this isn’t what I was expecting, what a let down…»

We love it here! Look, I understand that this is literally in the epicenter of «tourist» San Francisco area, but I don’t judge good food just because of the restaurant location. Every time we have come here, we have had amazing food. I’ll admit that the service is hit or miss, but look, as long as my drink remain food and someone brings food to my table, I don’t care about much else. The food always comes out piping hot and all of the ingredients taste super fresh. We usually get the Trio Fajitas Platter, which is $ 22.00 because it is for two people. It doesn’t state this on the menu(it should) but it comes with 6 tortillas, a HUGE skillet of meat and veggies, a plate of rice and a plate of beans, as well as some sour cream and salsa. The other thing we get a lot is the wings. It seems weird to order wings from a Mexican restaurant, but trust me on this one. They are amazing. Crispy outside, soft juicy inside. It is everything you want in a wing. Look past the negative reviews. We are locals… we didn’t just visit once and leave a bad review. We go regularly and always receive outstanding, fresh food. I even complimented the chef today. Awesome. Check it out!

This is my 100% honest review. I visited San Francisco Halloween weekend. I came to this place Halloween day, The traffic was slow, myself and two other couples where there. I was greeted by a young female which in Halloween attire, I asked her to seat me some where I could charge my phone and she sat me at the bar, so I could charge my phone. I ordered the Nachos and added shrimp. Honestly I called these chipos… they literally took mad beans placed them in the middle, put a spoon full of cheese a teaspoon of guacamole and a teaspoon of sour cream on top of two bags of chips and called them nachos not to mention I only had 6 shirmp. Yes I counted it, whatever i’m particular about my food. The rice drink was off the chain, i’m addicted to the mexico ice cream bars, and the their drink is the bomb… Only negative no free re-fills, which SUCKS but it is good tho! Overall for about $ 15 bucks it was two points below«just ok» Would never go again if I was to go to San Fran.

Yuck! We arrive around 1:30 on a Saturday afternoon. The hostess says it will be about 5 minutes before she can seat us. There is no one in front of us and we see more than 5 empty tables. 5 minutes go by and the hostess says it will be about 5 more minutes, why? Because she’s waiting for menus, none are available. That’s when we should have taken the hint and left, but no, we stuck it out. Let’s just jump right to the food. Flavorless refried beans and dry rice. I ordered Chili Colorado. The beef was the texture of shoe leather and just like the beans, not much flavor. It had not been simmered in the chili, instead it was pre-cooked and thrown in the chili sauce just before serving. You could tell because half the beef chunks had no chili sauce on them. The chips are poured right out of a big cardboard box into an even bigger plastic container, and that’s where they scoop from to serve you. High point? Their bathroom was clean.

Ok so let’s start with the host. At first she was kind and told us there was a fifteen minute wait. Ok, nothing wrong with that so my girlfriend and I decided to wait for outdoor seating. Fifteen minutes passes by then the host comes over and rudely says«tables ready» and just speed walks away without even checking if we were following. We get to our seats and she just tosses the menus on the table and walks away. Yeah, you don’t do that. Waiter comes not one minute later to ask us if we’re ready to order. We barely had the chance to sit down because outside seating is very cramped so no we weren’t ready. We just asked for water until we were ready. Other tables had chips and salsa to start out but we never got some. But the girls in front of us were flirting with a waiter and he even brought them a second helping.(He was flirting out loud giving sexual innuendos for a «night out») unacceptable. Anyway our waiter comes back and takes our order. Last time we saw him until he came to bring us the check. The food: I had the enchiladas with red sauce. I’ll make this simple, no flavor, the chicken was undercooked, and the tortilla was old. My girlfriend had the tortilla soup bowl. They literally cut a whole avocado in half and just tossed it inside. The chicken in the soup was in chunks. Her food was also«flavorless». All in all, we felt rushed, bad service, bad food, and one of the staff was unprofessional. Waste of $ 27 dollars. Avoid at all costs!

The food smelled, looked and tasted great. But that’s not the whole experience now is it? Our server seemed genuinely disinterested. He offered chips, salsa and guacamole when we sat down. The place is known for the mango guacamole right? Better yet, the mango guacamole is free when you check in on Unilocal.Right? When checking in I saw the $ 10 gets you $ 20 offer so I did it. When the check came, chips and salsa were $ 2. No bank breaker but this is the first Mexican place I’ve been to that charges for chips and salsa. I showed him the free guacamole offer and the server reached over and redeemed it. I mentioned the $ 20 voucher and he tells me we can only use that or the free guacamole offer. I take the $ 20 voucher(don’t see myself coming back) and then I see the guacamole(that tastes like Costco guacamole with mango chunks sprinkled on it) is $ 11.75. Ya.

Where do i start… Lets start with the hostess, who arent with the mostest… then comes the service which was FAIR, but took forever to bring our drinks and apps. Then most important which is the food. THEWORSTFOOD I HADEVERHAD. my family and i were disgusted with everything we ordered. The meat we were told by our server was«precooked.» NASTY! My steak burrito was awful. All fatty. We asked for a manager after we HATED everything and manager never showed up. Worst experience ever. I would never recommend this place to anyone!

I will never eat Steak Nachos anywhere again. By far the best I’ve had. We ordered the Trio Fajitas and Steak Nachos, Chips & Salsa. Unfortunately they were out of the Mango Guacamole… but very Large portions. I’d go back to the pier just to have another bite of their delicious food. My mouth is watering just thinking of their dish. Outside deating area with beautiful breeze. Our server was fast, sweet, and patient. He was checked in on us momentarily to make sure everything was great.

BADSERVICE! DONTWASTEYOURTIMECOMINGHERE! I’ll skip the whole story of my experience but instead list the ridiculous shit this restaurant got going on: — if you found a groupon deal, skip that shit! They will CHARGEYOU A HUGETIP and say it’s an automatic tip that’s added to your bill –be careful what you order because they won’t tell you of the extra charge on things like chips and salsa –Our waiter ALEX was a douche. we saw him once and never got back to us to check up if we needed anything; We got our order incomplete and he didn’t even check what he gave us. — I had complained about the tip to the manager cause clearly the waiter did NOTDESERVE A tip that was over $ 20(WTF) and Alex came around and snatched the receipt out of my hand! Totally rude and needs to get fired for that! — This restaurant is a big time Fail when it comes to serving people and the food is not worth it.

My very first Unilocal review i didn’t want to give 1 star but being that my waiter Carlos wasn’t rude until the very end. I’m going to get right to it we was seated right away, and brought water very quick in less than 5 minutes from being seated. I ordered my meal the mango guacamole was very fresh and yummy next came out my mango burrito but the grilled chicken was very salty(if you have high blood pressure don’t try it) as I was almost half way finish the manager comes over to me as asks if I would like a to go box I turned and replied know thank you I’m still eating, how about you ask me if everything is ok first! Then he walks over to other employees whispering and staring at me how rude! Just because my skin is a different color my money is green!!!

I wish we had read the reviews prior to ordering our food. Once we ordered our drinks, we were set to rate this place 5 stars. The drinks are definitely worthy of 5 stars, especially the«Mama’s Margarita.» We order the mango guacamole, mango ceviche, and shrimp cocktail. Disappointed that the mango pieces were hard and crunchy which ruined the guacamole and ceviche so I just sat there and picked most of it out. The shrimp cocktail was okay. I asked the waiter if people really like the mango that way and his response was that mango was not in season and that he was sorry. I told him that he should have warned us prior to us ordering as we could have ordered something else. If I ever come here, it will only be here for drinks. Was not happy at all. I will give it two stars only because the drinks were good.

Given the mixed reviews on Unilocal,I was already very cautious coming in. To be quite honest, if it weren’t for my parents wanting to come here because they heard«rave reviews from their friends», I would NOT have stepped foot in here based solely on the Unilocal reviews. That being said, even though I told myself not to have any expectations about the place, I still came out very disappointed. I was concerned about using my Unilocal check-in reward(free mango guac with chips) in conjunction with our Groupon so we specifically flagged down our server to ask. Note: on the bill, our server name is «Mgr Alan.» Our server said verbatim: «Yes, that’s okay. Let me get it for you.» Great! That made me feel much better about our dining experience. 45 minutes later when our bill comes, same server says«You can’t use your Groupon. You can only use one coupon per time.» What? That’s why I asked you! «So do you want to use your Groupon or the Unilocal coupon?» Not even an apology for not clarifying it earlier, and for playing games. For the sake of keeping the mood of celebrating my parents’ birthdays, I decided not to argue with him. It’s so obvious what game he was playing: trick customers into paying $ 12 extra for guacamole. And he’s supposed to be the manager of this place? That’s real shady, and says a LOT about this place. Service, obviously, was not that great. Just because you’re located in a tourist hot spot doesn’t mean you won’t encounter local patrons. Your shady business practice might work on people who are here once and that’s it, but it leaves a lasting impression on the locals. Honesty goes a long way. The food was just ehh. We ordered the Mexican Hot Wings, Chile Verde, Carnitas, Carne Asada Burrito, and the mango guacamole. The only thing that tasted really fresh was the mango guacamole. The pico de gallo that came with my Carnitas tasted and smelled old. The chicken wings were cold in the middle. The restaurant environment isn’t bad. The chairs are super worn down, though. And the music was way too loud for any decent conversation to be held. There are plenty of other places in SF with better quality food for MUCH better value. Even with our Groupon, the meal was not worth it. Like my fiancé said: «Never again.» Also, contrary to what’s listed on Unilocal, they do NOT take reservations.

Kind’a expensive for Mexican food, but thanks to our Groupon, we spent $ 20 for a $ 50 meal($ 10 for food, $ 10 tip). They charge you for the chips and salsa($ 2) that normally is gratis at other places. The appetizers were pricey and not very imaginative. Yet tasty. We ordered flautas and enchiladas. Full dinner on both. Full dinner means you get rice and beans. Not a fan of the rice and beans. Something tasted wrong with the rice, sour like. Beans didn’t have any flavor at all(I was wondering how that can be, but it was true at least with the beans we had). It was nice to be able to choose indoor or outdoor seating. We chose indoor because it was very cool and very breezy. So dinner was comfortable. Now, here’s the really cool part. There was an all female Mariachi band! They were absolutely fantastic. They went from table to table, asking what kind of song you might like to hear. We asked them to play something fun and upbeat and they delivered! Tip them by putting a couple of dollars in the base guitar! We had a great time, our dinner was good, service was good and we really enjoyed the entertainment which was completely unexpected. Having said that, I don’t think we’ll be back any time soon. There are too many really good Latin/Mexican/Cuban/Peruvian places in San Francisco that have as good or better food for better prices.

This place was pretty good for a Mexican food fix. My brother and I were kinda over the idea of eating seafood again, and decided to eat here instead. It’s location is convenient being right on pier 39, and has both indoor and outdoor seating. Thinking about the new ocean views, we decided to sit outside. It ended up probably being a wrong choice as we are not used to the San Francisco weather and winds. The seating hostess was nice, and our waiter was too. I checked in on Unilocal and got a free mango guacamole which was pretty generous. I also ordered a cocktail and that was out in right away. I ordered the simple street tacos, as I usually can’t finish more than that, but my siblings got some big plates with good food. I think my brother ordered the fajitas plate, which came out in a huge portion and was still hot off the grill. Overall, it was good food, but I think I’ve been to better Mexican restaurants.

2 great things about this place: The View and chips n salsa. Other than that I was really disappointed. And I Unilocaled it before we went so I knew it wasn’t the best… But we had a groupon, and I was hopeful… So we went. … Our service was awful! Incredibly slow. A couple that came in waaaay after us had come and gone by the time we got our appetizers(shrimp cocktail that was OK). Our server was not nice but not«rude». We had to hunt him down once because we were freezing outside and done/ready to pay and leave for 20 minutes with no sign of him. He didn’t check on us once the entire meal outside taking our orders and bring us food. All in all it was just ok. But for Cali I’d expect better. Meh.

EMPFEHLUNG!
