I have to be biased. I met Ms. J. from her former hair cutting place, so she’s here now. In Chinatown you have to get use to the disorganization. I don’t know why it is but it is. It has a jewelry glass case display in the front probably for added business. One time I thought for sure I was going to lock myself inside the restroom. But it does have a Hong Kong flare to it, if this helps any.

Deserves zero stars and they are total thieves. I’m a big supporter of small businesses and live in Chinatown. My first experience with this salon was with joy salon #2(the one on Stockton which is owned by the same people but is swankier) I went to this one on Washington street twice now. Last time, Sheila blew out my hair and used the flatiron to halfassedly leave some curls and the best part is contrary to the advertised blowout price of $ 9 that she has outside, she charged me $ 24. Even then, I thought she charged me $ 10 bucks extra for the fact that she used a flatiron so I go back today and ask for just a blowout. She and her coworker kept asking me to do the flatiron and I kept saying no and that I want a normal blowout. This nincumpoop gave me the worst blowout I’ve ever gotten in my life and charged me $ 15 for it and asked for tip. My hair was still left damp, it looks like it was not blow out at all. Absolutely terrible and I swear I will never come to your salon again. I hate when people bamboozle you when they see you’re nice.

If I could give this place zero stars, I would. This place does NOT deserve to be running at all. Why? Let me tell you why: My cousin’s mom scheduled an appointment at this salon(come on, people avoid Chinatown for a reason) so that she can get a prom-do. $ 45 for hair and makeup. We walk in for her 2 pm appointment and I tell them that she has been scheduled for 2 pm so that she can get to prom ~5pm. I also remind them of the price negotiated on the phone. They hand us a hair-style book to choose styles from– the pictures look like they came out the 80s. The guy that was supposed to do my cousin’s hair spent his sweet ass time straightening 2 strands of hair of a lady that he was working on when we came in. The clock starts ticking. 2:30, 2: 45, 3:00. For god’s sake, you are straightening neck length hair(same strands!!). Clearly, he is trying to get back at us for the negotiation. Okay, I call my uncle and tell him that the hairdresser has not been working on my cousin’s hair(she needs to be out by 4:15 to beat traffic, go home, and change). My uncle comes in and urges the hairdresser. The hairdresser reluctantly begins working on my cousin’s hair at 3:15. My cousin has an idea of her ideal hair-do, which includes a braid. What does he do? He starts on his 80s style on my cousin. My cousin says this is not what she wants – there is no braid in sight). He loosens the curls and just curls her hair into a side ponytail. WHAT??? GJIASTNEKJJ!!! We state one more time that she needs a braid across her head, ending at the side of her neck, with the loose ends curled. He IGNORES our request, pins the curls messily(no braid), and walks off. By this time, it is 4:05 pm and the lady needs to apply my cousin’s make-up. Ridiculous. The hairdresser needs his hairdresser certificate/license rescinded and the place needs to shut down. If you so choose to go there, do NOT have your hair done by a man in his 40s, with silver rings on his hands, an Asian mohawk, with terribly dyed yellow hair. He does not listen to requests and does things his own way. He also has a terrible attitude; as if no one saw why he was taking his sweet time at 3:15 pm on someone else’s head when our appointment was at 2 pm.

I came here TWICE in my life. The first time I LOVED my haircut, the guy there spent over an hour on it, snipping away my hair. However he thought that I didn’t understand Chinese, and talking about how he’s giving a haircut to a little girl, gee thanks, JERK. Two years later, I came back for another haircut, and this time my mom goes bragging to him about how much I loved my haircut from 2 years ago. I don’t know what happened, but it seems that when he been praised so he THINKS that he will make it nice again without much worry. Before the haircut, I got my hair washed by some lady, most painful hair wash in a salon, EVER. Her nails were long and basically DIGGING into my skin during the wash. Then for my haircut with the guy, I looked like a TURTLEHEAD after my haircut. It was 2 inches shorter than I wanted. If you can imagine from the center of my head, and make a circle with a 1inch radius, inside that circle is like ALLMYBANGS, since they were short like the bangs he gave me. I basically went home and cried since it was that horrible, I can’t believe I wasted 25 bucks on that, WITHTIPS.

Why this place is cheaper than the other Joy’s, I don’t know. I like that they don’t rush you like that other one, which will give you a better result. It’s less clean than the other one, but that’s cool with me.

this place is so-so. the salon looks pretty cool and the place plays cool asian movies that you can watch while getting your hair done. the prices to get your hair cut and dyed are average. they aren’t totally cheap. I think I got my hair cut for about 12 dollars, that isn’t too bad but– considering it’s in chinatown, you can definitely get a good haircut for less. hairdying cost about 85 dollars… so screwed up. the woman had these hidden fees and didn’t understand me at all maybe. i never complain about something to people, even though in reality i don’t like it, but– i really complained because i brought in a picture of how i wanted my hair to look and specifically asked how i wanted my hair, and she didn’t do it! she just kept going and going, and i was like, «.wth are you doing, woman? and i didn’t want it like that! this looks NOTHING like the picture!!» but she kept saying, «oh nooo it’s fine! don’t worry about it.» Well, it definitely got me worrying. The picture I wanted had curly hair and it was all styled uniquely, but honestly, my hair didn’t finish the way it was supposed to look, and still doesn’t. My hair was way too short from how I wanted it, and I wanted my hair to be one uniformed color but she put two colors in my hair pretty much. And all I wanted was a simple hairdye, and she put additional fees in because she used 2 hair colors, which I didn’t ask for. After that, I just took the scissors and re-did the hair to make it more«me». Ever since I’ve been cutting my own hair again. I don’t think I’ll be going to a salon for a while because my hair never ends up the way I want it to.
