My experience with GNG&L can be summarized with several key words: professional, knowledgable, accommodating, and exceptional.
Joon, the owner of the shop, is a business man of the highest caliber.
I showed up randomly on a Friday morning with a sphere of Quartz the size of a golf ball, that needed extremely unique cuts, and drilling. Within thirty minutes we came to an agreement on feasible cuts, cost, and estimated time of completion. His estimate was spot on (4 hour turn around), and the end result was absolute quality.

As a first time gem customer, I wasn’t expecting the process to be this great. Joon, the proprietor of this wholesale gem and lapidary (gem cutter), is the best person you could ask for when it involves high quality precious minerals.
First of all, the business is on the 5^th floor of the Bong Building in downtown SF (kinda awesome right off the bat). Parking requires going to a garage but the place is easily accessible with public transit. You are buzzed into the shop through a security cage and you enter a gem wonderland. Not some kind of Tiffany’s or glittery backlit rip-​off joint but a true gem garden. There are neat boxes divided into small squares, all full of an amazing array of stones in every size, color, cut and shape imaginable. Most people never see gems this way, they only see what the jeweler has chosen — here you can choose. If you want to really be creative with jewelry, this place is a must.
I had a few of my own stones that I needed cut and he did a great job in explaining the options and telling me the true cost. He is never trying to upsell you or mislead you. In the often opaque world of gems and jewelry, he’s a beacon of trust. So if you want to get some gemstones for your own project, or get gems cut or reworked, this is probably the best place you could ask for. I looked around and it seems like the only viable option in the bay area.

I love Joon. I am a local jewelry designer and Joon has been a great resource to have. He is honest, super generous with his time and energy, flexible and just a great all-​around person. He has special ordered stones for me and held them until I can come pick them up. I believe, but am not 100% sure, that they can cut and polish stones there — I know every time I’m in, I see people in the back with lapidary equipment. I love supporting local business people and as long as Good Neighbor is around, I will not give my business to anyone else.
