Yesterday I intended to take in the art galleries in downtown SF and to my disappointment found that the galleries had mostly closed up for the end of August. But the day was not lost. At Corden Potts Gallery(one of newer galleries at 49 Geary specializing in photography) the doors were open and a new show by the photographer Jeri Eisenberg had just opened. The subject of the work is tree forms; leaves, branches and trunks. Unlike traditional photographs the work is hung like a scroll. The paper has a pleasing waxy look and appears to have been treated with encaustic. The photographs are both muted and colorful and handsomely displayed.

This is a beautiful photography gallery run by experienced and highly skilled local photographers. I saw an amazing exhibit here called«The Caretakers» by Bill Mattick that was shot with an 8×10 camera. The exhibit is of an architecturally impressive train station at 16th and Wood streets in Oakland that used to be a major transit hub but has been abandoned since the 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake. The building now has two homeless men named Willy and Paul who live there and act as its caretakers. Mattick’s photos tell the story of the building, its inhabitants, and the surrounding community. I am looking forward to their upcoming exhibits!
