Best mom and pop sandwich shop. Always made with love. Samantha knows everyones favorites and calls everyone by name. Some of the best customer service there is. Best picks: Jessicas turkey, meatball, gyro, and cheesesteak

Sam makes the BEST sandwiches ever, esp the gyro, and the meatball sub. Well worth the value, as well as the personal touch(she’ll remember your fav order the next time you walk in)

Hummus sales pitch. The lady helping me didn’t take no for an answer. After deciding against paying an extra $ 1.50 for hummus, she insisted it was worth it. House made. Delicious. Wouldn’t regret it. Fine. Sold. She was right. It was good. Just not sure it was $ 1.50 good. It did however turn a reasonably priced($ 6) turkey sandwich into something better. Sometimes that is the price you have to pay. You’ll have to decide if the hummus is worth it. I can tell you for about the same price the chocolate walnut cookie absolutely is.

So when I worked up at CPMC I used to come here at least once a week. Namely because of their crab salad sammich and their gyros. I was obsessed! Then I got a job that has«stock options» and had to leave my beloved eatery behind. That was 3 years ago. I walk into Captain Submarine a couple of weeks ago and I am greeted by the gorgeous woman who owns the place with her family like I never left! She remembered me and what I liked to eat and details of my life we had shared over the years. Maybe it was because I greeted her with my Korean solidarity, but in any case, I was blown away by the amazing memory and kindness of this family run business. They are polite, friendly, and make an awesome gyro to boot! Soft bread, thin sliced meat(generous in portion) with veggies and a cream sauce that adds a little smoothness to the whole experiece. The prices are MORE than reasonable, ingredients are fresh and service is with a smile. I think those of us in Pac Heights are fortunate to have Captain Submarine for a tasty sammich option and hope to have them here for years and years to come!

Let me just say, the have the BEST crab sandwiches you will find, period! I Have been going to this place for the last 7YEARS. I have tried crab sandwiches elsewhere and they do not compare! The bread they use is perfect and crunchy plus the owners and their daughter are soo sweet. You MUST try it at least once

This was my second stop on what is becoming a city-wide tour of crab salad sandwiches, during the height of dungeness season. The crusty baguette rolls they use have a nice hard crunch with good flakiness to it, so it isn’t too hard. The crab salad itself is very flavorful, with a distinctly peppery taste, but the bright pink flecks of meat lead me to think that it isn’t actual dungeness. There’s nothing wrong with krab salad in a sandwich, mind you. There’s probably even a school of thought that says that imitation crab is better for sandwich making than the real thing. But during the season itself, I’d just as soon head down to the wharf and take my chances with one of the sandwich carts to get my crab salad fix. For $ 7 you get a pretty tasty sandwich though, and I’ll probably need to come back here again to get a better sense of what this place is really about.

Looking for a quick, no frills lunch in the middle of the day in Pac Heights? Well, you’ve come to the right place, cap’n! Captain Submarine is tucked away amongst the cutesy shops that line Fillmore street, and if you’re not looking intently, it’s very possible you’ll miss it completely. It’s not flashy by any means, but boy howdy, do have some of the best hummus this side of Mesopotamia. For that alone you should check ‘em out. The prices are super cheap, especially for the part of town in which it sits. You can get away with spending a little under $ 5 for a small sandwich and a bag of chips. In an era where $ 9 sandwiches seem to be status quo ’round these parts, it’s refreshing to see people still offering this age old snack at a price that won’t break the bank.

On my search to find some good eats on Fillmore, I stumbled into this little shop. Gyros, pizza and subs? yay! operated by asians? double yay! sandwiches in 3 sizes? triple – wait, a medium is 7.50? Cash only? ugh! you microwaved my meat? you burnt my bread? sigh… search continues :(

Best sub in Pac Heights. Excellent value, 3 sizes of most sandwiches, fast and friendly service. Eat here if you’re in a sandwich mood.

After seeing all these 4 and 5 stars, I was so excited to try this place. It is almost outside the door from CPMC, my new job site. Well… Unilocalers, you disappoint me :(Coming from the East Coast, I expected a sub. After all, your name has submarine in it! Must be for the shape of the sandwich, not the taste of it. The shredded lettuce on it tasted like old refrigerator. I noticed it was not covered in the cold box, figures. The meats, lack luster. Not a sub as I have known subs. On with my search.

WIN(what I nommed) report: Nommed: Medium Crab Sandwich Bread: excellent, crusty on the outside, soft and tasty inside Crab Salad: peppery and delicious, a bit watery though Service: friendly and quick Overall a solid 4-star experience. If the sandwich had been less than $ 7 — $ 6, say — then there’d be 5 stars. Still, not complaining.

Captain Submarine! I stopped by today for lunch and this place is delicious. I can’t even remember the name of my sub, but it was well-cooked, neatly made, fast and tasty. My lunch companion also enjoyed his sub, so no complaints in the taste department. As far as location, parking can be a bit scarce around peak hours. Watch out for the cash only policy, as I had to run hit an ATM, since(apparently) nowhere in this town wants to take my credit cards! Also, the seating is fairly limited and cramped. Don’t bring a large group. This place is great for a quick, cheap lunch. See you there!

Fast, tasty eats in Pacific Heights! Captain Submarine has all the ingredients for the quintessential sandwich. Crusty bread, generous serving of meats and cheeses, and fresh veggies, toasted to golden perfection if that’s your preference. Order a large sandwich, grab a table and share lunch with a friend for about $ 10, total. We had the Italian, and seriously, they do not skimp on the meats. Hello, salami! Cash only! Parking is a bit challenging. Bonus: work off lunch by walking the steep hills!

Tiny tiny place but they have pretty good sandwiches. They toast their bread, which I love. I just had a turkey sammy with the usual veggies and the bf had the meatball sammy. Service was excellent, the man and woman were extremely nice. will definitely come back.

Their sandwiches are awesome! I wish they were bigger though… I guess w/the bad economy & being located in San Francisco, they had to cut back. Turkey, Ham, Pastrami, Provolone Cheese, Lettuce, Tomato, Italian Dressing On Sweet Roll (Monday, March 31, 2009)

Argh! I’m torn, but this grade change must be made. I’ve discovered«Ike’s Place» in the Castro, and now feel that I can no longer call Captain Submarine my favorite 5-Star sandwich shop in the City. Alas, it must now fall to 4-Stars with the emergence of a new sandwich champion, courtesy of Ike’s. *Cry, cry

Average. Not great, not terrible. I didn’t eat a whole sandwich, just had a couple of bites from my boy’s…it was ok. The bread was bland. Maybe if I was really hungry it would have been better. For the price I would expect better meats and a little more taste. But it does ok in a pinch.
