Speaking about the meat counter; haven’t eaten in the restaurant. Considering the high prices, my wife and I have found the quality disappointingly inconsistent. The attitude of the counter personnel is neutral at best, not particularly outgoing or helpful. Although we live in the neighborhood and do buy quality meats, we’ve pretty much quit shopping here.

This is a review for the sit down experience. Belcampo is like our secret brunch spot. There is no line ups nor crowds nor noise — instead we get a very peaceful, delicious, and reasonably priced brunch. On our first trip here, we ordered 2 Usuals with Sausage — very delicious, though we were surprised to be charged an extra $ 4 for choosing sausage. We thought the extra was only for bacon. very confusing menu item!(it reads«2 eggs any style with home fries, and toast — sausage, or bacon +4») It was not a big deal though, because let’s face it — $ 13 sounds about right for brunch at any other SF brunch establishment. Plus, the quality of the sausages was superb, straight from the butcher, of course. On our second trip here, we ordered the ricotta pancakes and the ham benedict($ 9 and 13 respectively). Wow, the benedict was delicious! The English muffin was perfectly soaked in the poached egg. Again, the ham was delicious and very high quality, as expected. The ricotta pancakes were very soft and fluffy, mmmm! We had the same waiter both times, and he recognized us the second time :) The food came quickly both times. we had fast and attentive service. I loved that the seating area was spacious and comfortable(unlike the several other city brunch spots that sport wooden chairs and try to fit as many tables as possible to maximize number of people seated). Can’t wait to come back again!

My review is for a lunch visit, so I can’t comment much on the butcher shop side. Considering I walk by Belcampo at least twice every workday, it’s a little embarrassing that it was my first time visiting today. My coworker and I decided to stop in and grab some lunch, I went with the cheeseburger and he got the lamb option. From a purely visual standpoint the restaurant and the food are great. The long booth and table arrangement is nicely done, and is recessed enough from the butcher shop to let you get in more of a restaurant mindset. Both the burgers we ordered and the fries had really pretty presentation, but the cheeseburger seemed to be just OK after all the buildup. My coworker loved his lamb burger, so I may have to return to give that a try. I may have had higher hopes after all the commentary about the meat prep, but it definitely wasn’t a memorable flavor in my journey of burgering.

Meat was melt in your mouth delicious. But how did our bill come to $ 583 for four of us??? Yikes! And they don’t have a bar… only wine and heavy beers. I had the«Velvet» which was a cut from the calf(leg) of an adult cow. Delicious, but the portion was too small and I was hungry an hour later. French fries come with it and they were simply average Diner style. Meat…A+ You really can taste the difference with the grass fed beef. Down side is that the menu is about 6 items. Again, seems like the new norm but is it because the kitchen staff can’t learn more than 6 dishes? Service…B They try hard and you can tell that the staff has had a crash course in service, it is still somewhat rocky… though polite. Ambiance…C– For these prices the place should be way more classy. No textiles so the place is terribly noisy. It has the feeling of an Ice Cream Parlor. They should offer bread at the table, I mean come on, we paid $ 583! Summary: If you are in the 1% or can get someone to take you, try the meat! This place is the new normal in SF in that you need to be rich to get good quality food. The space should be much, much classier. Should’ve hired a good architect, Anya Fernald. I’m taking the next three months off from overpriced«trendy» restaurants. Then I’ll use the savings to go to Madrid twice a year where I can eat astounding quality meals for € 16 – 20. 10 – 15 awesome dinners there instead of 2 or 3 in SF. Even with airfare, I know I’ll end up saving money in the long run.

Just really really really good. The meat all around has great flavor, the quality of the meat has tremendous upside. Ambiance is great at lunch and dinner. Had we lived here, buying meat from here would be must.

We went for brunch on Sunday after New Years. it is rare to find a good spot to eat in this city that isn’t jam — packed with folks getting their grub on. I had been to this place in Larkspur more than a year ago for a work dinner. My husband and I split the steak and eggs(«ask for today’s meat» — it was tri tip, which frankly, my be my least favorite cut of meat– it is always too chewy), I was hoping for a strip or a skirt, or even a sirloin. We thought that would not be quite enough food — so we ordered an English muffin — which looked way better than your average Thomas’s muffin from the Unilocal photos. The muffin came first — we asked for jelly but they didn’t have any(HUH? might be an indication that no one ever comes for brunch here, but whatever… I can eat it with only butter, I’m a civilized gal.) Then came the steak and eggs, the tri tip was chewy — as it always is, but MAN — OH — MAN, those potatoes were outta this fricking world, lots of caramelized(and I mean REALLY caramelized) onions, and the potato nuggets were super duper crispy —(duck fat maybe??). Anyway, our extra side should have been more potatoes. It was about $ 34 all in for a split of the steak & eggs, plus the muffin and a cup of joe.

A good balance between laid back and upscale, this butcher shop sure knows how to raise their meats as well as cook them. Lets look at what we ordered: Ordered the salami and peperoni appetizers and was left underwhelmed. It was good, but not enough qyantity. The beef tartar app was pretty good though(quantity and taste wise). Drinks: $$ a pretty decent selection, actually. I ordered a Spanish wine. New York style Steak: Now we are talking. Medium rare, succulent, and seasoned to perfection For $ 34 a pop, the steak was juicy and tender. Good balanced flavor and served with hand cut fries(served w/this awesome dip). Yeah sure, $ 34 is a little expensive for a butcher shop/fine dining restaurant? But it was great, is all I’m saying. They nailed it. All in all good ambience, good food. A bit pricey, but worth a visit. Reservations, especially on the weekend, are a must due to limited seating. Side Note: They have some exciting meats, sausages, cold cuts etc on the butcher side of the restaurant(entrance) if you’re interested.

Came here last night to celebrate the holidays with a friend and to escape the SantaCon madness on Polk Street. What a great place. The restaurant is in the back and has the look and feel of an old world steakhouse: panelled walls, velvet drapes, marble tables, framed prints of meat on the walls. Service: excellent. Attentive, knowledgeable and friendly. They know the right balance of being around when you need them without being intrusive. Food: a limited menu. A plus sometimes. Here for example. Steaks, chops, burgers, salads. We shared the Cowboy steak. Perfect for two coupled with a simple yet tasty salad and perfectly fried fries. The steak was great. Juicy, flavorful not to fatty. We shared the wedge which is tasty, the beet salad and the salami. Drinks: we brought a bottle that they decanted without any fuss. We also ordered some wine and bubbly from the menu. Limited but good. Dessert: lemon Custard and Chocolate Boudin. Amazing. Delicious. Not to be missed. Don’t miss the Ziesche soap in the bathroom. Or the odd stuffed chickens about. Adds charm to the place. I’ll be back.

Belcampo is a splurge for me but it’s worth it — one of the few quality butchers around that raises animals humanely. It makes me happy knowing I’m at least eating an animal that wasn’t slaughtered some of the terrible ways other suppliers go about. The butchers here are extraordinarily friendly and helpful with the recommendations, and you can get your meat sliced to certain specifications. I also love their fries! I have yet to sit down for a meal here, but it’s on my list. Get your meat at Belcampo! Not only were the animals treated better, but you’ll be feeding yourself better meat.

I got a little excited to see poutine on the menu. It tasted good, but it definitely was not deserving of being called poutine. Take the fries out of it and I’d say it’s a really good stew. Had to try the burger. Not an over-the-top/blow-your-mind burger, but still good. You can tell it’s high quality meat. I probably didn’t order the best of what they have to offer, but I’d say the food is solid. And I was happy with the beer selection.

National Cheeseburger Day turned out to be the ideal day to come here because they were offering two-for-one cheeseburgers. The regular price for the Belcampo Cheeseburger is $ 17, so it wasn’t that incredible a deal. Of course, that’s the price you pay for sustainable, grass-fed meat that they personally raise and butcher. In fact, the fresh cuts of meat are what you see first when you walk through the front door on Polk(photo: ). Jamie W. and I had no preconceived notion of coming here as we strolled by on a Friday evening. When we took notice of the deal, we asked the host if a table for two was available. «No sir, not until 9:30, but you’re free to sit at the counter in the butcher shop.» OK. It wasn’t bad really, and we barely aced out a gaggle of entitled young girls with extensions who left in a huff when they couldn’t snatch a table tapping their fake fingernails on their smartphones. Nursing a couple of puckery-fresh $ 3 Lemonades(photo: ), we decided to try a couple of appetizers. The first were the $ 13 Fried Green Tomatoes which were halved and artfully presented with beef tongue slices inserted in between. The alternating slices sat on a combination of avocado crema and tomatillo salsa, and it was all sprinkled with cubes of fresh sheep’s milk cheese(photo: ). We really liked the Mexican take on a Southern classic, just wish there was more of it for he price. The other appetizer we tried was actually billed as a snack, the $ 8 Duck Balls. Yes, you read that right. I didn’t know they had ‘em but from what we tasted, it’s evident they don’t which may explain Donald’s perennially nasty disposition. Duck’s, not Trump’s. They were ground, rolled in spheres and fried, just three of them with shaved Asian pear, ginger and peanuts(photo: ). Good but gone too soon as well. The burgers finally arrived, and they were good. Fresh, juicy and thick though a tad top-heavy for its limited circumference. White cheddar was melted on top, and it came packed with butter lettuce, caramelized onions and a house sauce akin to a light barbecue sauce. And of course, there were crispy fries to complete the plate(photo: ). They certainly hit the spot for $ 8.50. I think for $ 17, I need to consult my financial advisor. Oh Jamie… FOOD — 4 stars… solid, organic quality though the portions are a tad paltry for the price, a common complaint from me AMBIANCE — 3.5 stars… actually the narrow counter was fine by us, the dining room actually looked a little packed by comparison SERVICE — 3.5 stars… pretty attentive considering our second-class status TOTAL — 4 stars… I think I may have to weigh the value of my 401k against the $ 125 Cowboy Chop, but my carnivorous appetite may prove too overwhelming

I am still a big fan of Belcampo’s bone broth and I try to drink it daily. I always feel well nourished and warmed after a big cup of it. The other day I decided to try Belcampo’s stocks. I ordered both their chicken and beef stock. I was disappointed to learn that both stocks contain sunflower oil. I’m not sure why any additional oil needs to be added to the stock, let alone sunflower oil. Sunflower oil is not an optimal oil . I was bummed to learn of this added ingredient and I will be sticking to their bone broths instead. Trust.

So through this journey of eating through the list, I’ve been trying to not just eat by myself since that’s not always the best. Instead this time, I was joined by a friend who lived in the area. I started with the belcampo spritzer(House blended aperitivo, prosecco, soda & orange). This is delicious! Light and refreshing definitely. The prosecco added a bit bubbles(which if you know me, I love), but the other parts of it was great as well. We started off with the beef tartare(#100 on the 7×7 list) and it was pretty good. I wouldn’t say its the best I’ve ever had, but was definitely worth it. The mustard they add to it adds this great bite, and you can definitely tell they used a great meat for the tartare. Then I ordered one of the Butcher blocks steaks they had that night. Mine turned out to be a petite sirloin. SOGOOD. Cooked to a perfect medium rare. The sauce was amazing with it and paired so great! In addition, the sides that came with it were a delicious corn and mushroom hash. YUM! This has become a great neighborhood restaurant that I’ll probably end up going to a few times. Great steaks at great prices! Protip: Get something from the butchers block. You won’t regret it! It’s delicious.

After hearing great things about the Los Angeles location, I was excited to try this place. We didn’t see any reservations available online that met our needs, so we called and were told they couldn’t accommodate us at 6 like asked, but if we made it by 540 they would seat us. Expecting it to be busy, we rushed in and found the entire seating area to be empty! The server was delighted to tell us about their special event menu highlighting farm fresh ingredients from Sonoma. We were then informed we couldn’t order anything from their regular menu, including the note-worthy burger and fries we specifically came to try. After seeing our disappointment the server let us order the burger, but gave us a salad instead of the«famous» fries that are cooked in beef fat. :(The medium rare burger came out well without any sign of pink. :(The bill came and the happy hour drink we ordered was more expensive than the menu stated. We notified the server and the manager comped the drink. Will we return– probably not. For $ 19, the burger and 3 leaves of butter lettuce did not meet our expectations. I love that they do special event menus, however it was simply unfortunate that I came on a night when their regular menu wasn’t available. It was also frustrating that they weren’t able to accommodate our 6pm request, yet the restaurant was empty upon arrival and only 2 other small parties had been sat by the time we left. A special note– on Thursdays they open their front entrance way for guests to try samples free of charge. There was a charcuterie plate and lardo.

I won’t lie. I was really hoping to write a raving review about this place. I love going to local butchers over Safeway, and supporting small businesses, but sadly, the product I received was not what I was expecting. I went in and ordered up two bone in pork chops. I love pork chops. And I don’t even mind a little fat. But these pork chops were ALL fat. With the two pork chops I ordered, one probably had 3 bites of meat at best and the other only slightly a few more. The meat was great, but I basically paid $ 30+ for a bunch of pork fat. And that is upsetting. Hoping to find another butcher in the city soon.

So my dog gets better meat than I do. What the heck? After dog sitting over the weekend I inquired about the raw meat my friend feeds her French Bulldog. It looks pretty um… yummy? When directed to Belcampo I did my Unilocal search and headed on down. Not only is this a very nice butcher shop, it also has a lovely restaurant housed in the same space. My next visit will be to dine-in. Bright, clean and fresh is the first impression I noticed in this space. The service here is superb! The butcher(I am sad I forgot his name) was so patient to answer my numerous questions. Where does the meat come from? «Our Farm.» How often do you grind? «As often as necessary.» Can you cut the bones? «It depends on the size, but yes.» Here’s a picture of my dog! Yes, I showed him my dog. All in all a very pleasant experience. I can’t wait to try their meats for myself! Belcampo makes the dog grind regularly, packaged in 1lb containers. Bones are available most times, but I would suggest you call in advance to ask that they set some aside. They make a bone broth daily, so the bones are used quickly. For $ 30.00 I walked away with 4lbs of dog grind(hearts, liver, giblets etc.) and 2lbs of Lamb bones. Every dogs dream right?

We liked the charcuterie plate, which you would expect from a restaurant connected to a butcher shop. The beef tartar was pretty weird tasting. They oversauced it(by a mile) and I couldn’t taste the meat at all, just a smokey sauce. We only ate half the plate, and we never leave anything on the plate when there’s tartar. From looking at other pics, I think our tartar was just misprepared because the other pictures of the tartar actually look red, not brown. We also shared the burger. It was really good. Very juicy and flavorful and the bun was just right, not trying to steal the spotlight from the quality of the patty. We were too full for dessert. I think I would come back again, but definitely skip the beef tartar.

Allez-y, franchement!
