NOTE — Official Name is «6001 California Market». More Unilocal reviews and business info under that listing. While I do appreciate having this market as an option, it falls a bit short for me overall. Let me explain… One gripe about my neighborhood is there’s no small store geared towards us white people. Sure, I can get pickled herring or pig intestine soup no prob, but grabbing simple things like margarita mix, cereal, french bread, english muffins, etc can turn in to an easter egg hunt. A & D offers all these things under one roof which is great, but there’s a huge caveat — they close at 8:30. Since I’m usually looking for such items around 9PM, this isn’t an option. So minus a couple stars for that. Another thing — even if you are shopping during the day, you can get a lot more variety if willing to walk a few blocks. Thom’s has you covered for natural foods, A & K has the meats, lots of options on Clement for produce, Liberty’s got the convenience store thing covered, and for a generic grocery store there’s always the shitty IGA, or riding the bus out to one of the Safeways. Case in point — paying $ 6 or $ 7 for a 64 oz orange juice, and they don’t even carry any that have pulp.

I have to agree with the recent review. Seriously… nice fresh veggies, mostly organic… and the grass fed /sustainably farmed meat is great. The grocer is also friendly and will order things for you if you want something they don’t have. seriously, the only thing that I find odd is that they close so early… i wish i could get there more often, but my late-at-work schedule keeps me from shopping there more.

Since most of the reviews for this place are«so 2006», no seriously they are from 2006 and that must have been before the store changed hands, I am compelled to write a review. The store MUST have changed hands. Like from old dirty hands to awesome organic grass-fed free-range hands. Hands that run free and frolic in a field where the grass is all solar powered… ok…I’m way off track here. What I am trying to say is this place is awesome. I wish there was one on the corner of my block, and there very well could be but I wouldnt know because the sign would be in Chinese. The HUGE veggie section. A STELLAR anti-antibiotic meat section and a thousand and one great snacks and little essentials. Plus the people that work there are so nice it makes the food taste even better. The owner is so pleasent and will even ask you your name and call you by it the next time you come in. I am part of a program that matches you with a friend who has mental retardation and my friend Dylan from that organization with intellectual disabilities lives near the market and when I take Dylan in there the owner is so happy to see Dylan and says«Hey Dylan». Sometimes Dylan is having a good day and replies back but often I just buy him one of Apple & Dietrich’s delicous Oat Bars. He loves them. I HIGHLY recommend going in there. Grab some delicious food and say hello to the owner. Who knows you may even see Dylan in there too.

If this place was a small corner store I could understand its existance, but this place is HUGE! Everything is dusty, its kinda strange. Fortunately they just did some kind of remodel so it doesn’t look as creepy, but I have yet to go in. I suppose I should give it another chance. On the plus side, they are right across the street from a laundromat that I go to, so that is convenient at least :)
