I’ve been to many American Institute of Graphic Arts(AIGA) events and used their resources from time to time yet the annual membership fees range from $ 95 to $ 315. On top of that almost all of the AIGA events are not free for members. AIGA’s benefits really don’t measure up to the price of admission unless you’re an adamant networking hound or you intend on submitting artwork for competitions(which is a bit elitist if you ask me; Threadless voting by AIGA members please?). You’d be better off just paying per event. That said, the AIGASF chapter is nice enough. It never feels like there’s a tight community but rather a bunch of individuals with similar occupations. I’m merely judging this from the blank stares and zero smiles. lol. If designers are friendly then taxi drivers must be social enthusiasts. There also feels to be some ageism aloof. I swear I always get stares for being the youngest person and everyone just avoids me. I swear I took a breath mint! I suppose they’re just intimidated. :) I visited their offices for a volunteer info night. They share offices with the American Institute for Architects(AIA). For some reason I imagined both of their offices to be larger because of the SF locale. The interior is typical of a cold architecture office. The hallway leading to the bathroom is going through major construction so watch your head. They have chocolate at the counter!

AIGA’s San Francisco chapter is wonderful. The organization is very active and there is not a month that does not feature a guest lecture, seminar, showing or other activity. The events are opportunities to keep abreast of the movements, view work, listen the perspective of industry leaders, and discuss issues facing designers. AIGASF also provides a great way to meet and keep in contact with fellow creative professionals, build friendships and forge business relationships.

Saucy yearly parties and amazing design lectures make this organization a must join for anyone in the design community. Steep dues might detract some, but the level of quality in speakers and events has been on the rise over the past few years or so making it a worthwhile investment. It would be nice if members got more consideration(i.e. into lecture series events for free) for what it costs. Also, the yearly gala is the most fun event they host. It would be nice if there were more show stopping numbers like this throughout the year; however, the monthly traveling lounge helps to keep social spirits up allowing for a nice interaction with your design peers on a semi-regular basis.
