The Italian Bed & Breakfast

We stayed at the Italian Bed and Breakfast last night, as yesterday was our wedding day and we wanted a nice place to stay that night in an interesting location. It was a great experience! The bed was comfortable and the room was beautifully decorated. The absolute best part was the breakfast! We had explained to Megan when we made the reservation that we would be exhausted and would probably need to sleep in and she was happy to make our breakfast at a later time (11am instead of 9am) and asked us about our dietary preferences. We found our breakfast waiting for us in the dining room right at 11am and it was absolutely the best breakfast I’ve ever eaten! Butternut squash pancakes, an egg scramble with different kinds of squash, and a homemade blueberry muffin! After breakfast, we walked around Little Italy which is only a block away. Megan gave us a very generous late check out time (4pm) so we could enjoy Little Italy without worrying about having to check out of our room at a specific time. Highly recommended!

I am very disappointed because my last review was unjustly filtered and this is a review I feel is accurate and would be willing to support. I am going to try to re post it again so that people can actually get some valuable information from it.
My original review:
The Italian B&B is a great alternative to staying in a hotel.
It is in the perfect location for you to walk around and check out little Italy and located very close to downtown and the airport. They also have very reasonable rates that come with the advantage of having all the amenities of home. The website is very organized and offers a lot of information about the B&B and about San Diego and things to do in the area. Megan is the new chef at the B&B and she is very welcoming and will let you know where to park as noted in other reviews parking in the area can be difficult. The B&B has a very homey feel and the rooms are nicely decorated. Having a comfy bed is important to me and the bed was soft yet firm and I had a good nights sleep. The whole property is clean and inviting and I will be sure to stay there again! The best part of the experience however was the BREAKFAST! It was a gourmet breakfast with fresh organic ingredients. Megan is a great chef and she always comes up something new, exciting, and delicious. You have to give the Italian B&B a try.
The only thing I would add to this review is that the manager does not live on site so she is often not there to check people in.

This is an affordable clean room. The breakfast is very good. The hotel is not super well-​run. We checked in during the stated hours for check-​in, and no one was there. (someone mentioned this is normal, but I have stayed in other B and Bs and they are at least there when they say they will be to check you in!). There was a note on the door with an incorrect name. Other guests directed us down the street to a different hotel to get the keys, and the person did not know what to do. She called the manager who did not answer. After waiting a while, we just took the room in the wrong name because there was no one scheduled to check in other than us. The manager did not return our personal call that we had placed with questions about our stay (e.g. breakfast was listed as at 2 different times in different places, we did not have a shower curtain liner so the whole bathroom got wet).
Once we finally got settled, technically everything was ok. The stay was very different than what we had expected based on what was said online. We felt very much left out to dry the whole time we were there. I stayed at a B and B for a more personal experience, and got instead almost complete isolation. If that’s what you happen to be looking for, then this place would be perfect.

The negative reviews written about this place are very unfair, and I hope for Megan and the Italian B & B that more happy clients will represent them accurately. The Italian B & B is, hence the name a B & B, not your typical open-​all-​night hotel where someone is there to give you a plastic keycard and directions to your cookie-​cutter room. So when we arrived late, my friend and I were not at all surprised, nor inconvenienced, when we saw the envelope on the door directing us, quite simply, to fetch the key at the hotel across the street. When we did, we opened the door to a very well kempt, charmingly kitsch place and found our room clean and personal.
Breakfast the next day, prepared by Megan our wonderfully accommodating host, was delicious, warm, home-​made (albeit not Italian — this place was founded by an Italian family, as the old photos hanging on the walls recount, but though it may still be in the family that’s as Italian as it gets). The ambiance with the other guests over breakfast was nice. Having stayed three nights, on the third morning I had the time and pleasure to sit and chat with four other happy, satisfied guests. Megan was extremely helpful on the occasions in which we needed her. She was available by cell at any time of the day and night.
Trust me, don’t waste your money on another hotel chain where you’ll be greeted in the morning with pastries wrapped in cellophane and water-​down mud for coffee. This B & B is reasonably priced, clean, comfortable and unique.

Late check out may have saved my life today. God bless The Italian Bed and Breakfast.
I guess it’s Italian because it’s in Little Italy? Fine, let them call it what they want. I am so glad that we got to stay here last night.
The Bed: Cozy, clean little room with a comfy bed.
The Breakfast: We requested a vegetarian meal and got a fried (or was it poached?) egg on top of a quinoa cake. Delicious! My compliments to Chef Megan. We were a little late getting to the table so she kept it warm in the oven for us.
Fortunately, no one was booked for our room tonight. We asked if we could check out late, and we were told «no problem». I was in no condition to do anything but sleep (crazy night!) and that’s just what I did for three more hours. Thanks, Megan!
Little Italy is a cool neighborhood to explore, which is an added bonus. My wife and I were very happy with our stay here and we would definitely do so again.

The location and breakfast were great! Little Italy is just a couple of footsteps away from the entrance. I enjoyed walking around at night and checking out the local restaurants. Our breakfast was tasted like it was from a gourmet restaurant. Why only two stars? Parking was not convenient. We had to park on block away because the parking (one lane of cars on driveway) was packed. When I got there, the owner was not there to check me in. Instead, there was note left on the door for me with instructions on checking in. I hoped to get more welcoming experience when going to a B and B, but this was not the case. I would be cautious if I were to stay here.

I’m only writting this so I can warn you about this place. Looks can be deceiving. My wife and I booked the place for a week, we were very excited to be here for such a low cost, around $ 2,000 for everything on orbitz.
Ashley, the chef for the breakfast is AMAZING, I’d hire her to cook for me if we come to SD again. She is spot on every meal and a personality to go with it! Ashley is an up and coming chef in the area that has Hell’s Kitchen potential.
I came to SD for vacation and a minor surgery. I had a few conversations with the «owner» Jay and he WAS great to talk to at first. I talked to him on the 21^st about an up grade to the Romanza room which has a king sized bed to give me some more room to relax for my recovery. I offered to pay for it and he said no he would do it for free. I went to comfirm the room on Feb 1^st and he had Chef Ashley do his dirty work and tell me he booked the room. When confronting him about this, he said «Ahhhhh and uuuuuuum it was booked on line» I asked him why it wasnt removed from the web page so this wouldn’t happen and got no reply other then, «I’m sorry and I don’t know what to tell you.»
The saddest part is that when I asked himhow this could happen, it was infront of his staff. All 6 of them looked at me like this isnt the first time that’shappened.well, I can assure you I will never stay here again.
I wanted to let everyone know that I am currently staying here as of this. If we had the money for another place I would have packed my bags right then.
