As good as it gets. A cute but casual restaurant with a somewhat small but well flavored menu. We had a few fresh oysters, the Mahi Mahi nachos, spicy clam chowder, and the AMAZING and rich butterscotch pudding covered in caramel… yummm. Everything was tasty. I think someone in a previous Unilocal review referred to the pudding as ‘crack pudding’ which is very fitting. It’s a must try. What made this experience so great was the service… it really was superb. Our server was on top of everything and even offered ice cream for my birthday :) I highly recommend Spike Africa’s!

This place had great seafood. I’ve been downtown a couple times when I travel, so I was looking for something different plus we were meeting friends. The place had great drinks, great seafood, prompt service. I ordered a shrimp and scallop skewer over rice and it was a zesty flavor that had just the right amount of flavor. I will probably make this another stop when we go back.

Spike Africa’s Fresh Fish Grill and Bar in downtown San Diego is delicious. They offer all sorts of fantastic fresh fish choices on the menu. I usually find my self there at lunch time. Their menu offers everything, a full surf and turf. Beer Battered Fish and Chips, Mango BBQ Mahi-Mahi, Chicken California Wrap, to the Rogue Wave Burger, They have a little something for everyone in the group. They offer a full bar, that has great top shelf liquor and a very nice wine list. If that’s what suits you. I suggest this place to everyone, you will be pleased you stopped in and ordered something.

I like Spike Africa’s for their ceviche. I was first introduced to Spike Africa’s in the Unilocal Rocks the Boat event in San Diego( . My significant other and I stopped by for some drinks and appetizers. — Vanilla Lavender Lemon Drop — with vodka, lavender simple syrup, lemon juice, and vanilla — Fresh Fish Ceviche — with housemade pico de gallo & guacamole and tajin spiced corn tortilla chips — Raw Oysters(Hood Canal from Washington State; Kumiai Oyster from Baja) — Butter Scotch Pudding(free with Unilocal app check-in) — housemade with sea salt caramel Complex flavors and dimension. Delicious. My tastebuds are happy. Enjoy!

I’m not sure how this place is rated so high. They do have good oysters but that’s really all the good things I have to say. The ahi poke was average and the wantons that came with it were incredibly greasy. I ordered the lobster roll which had an absurd amount of roll to lobster. It was also impossible to eat as a sandwich. I was hoping the chips would help, but they were extremely over seasoned. The worst part was what my date ordered for dinner… She ordered the special of chili king crab legs which sounded promising. They came out I cracked and covered in chili sauce. They were nearly impossible to pick open and when she did the sauce over powered the crab.

Food: 4⁄5 Drinks: 4⁄5 Service: 4.5÷5 Décor: 3⁄5 Went here for a Sunday night dinner at the bar. Restaurant was fairly empty, so we sat at the bar. The poke(pictured) and ceviche were the two best menu items. Poke is standard fare in Hawai’i — raw fish similar to ceviche. The ceviche was more of a guacamole dish with a side of ceviche– really generous portions. The burger was average, and the side of fries was generous. The grilled fish tacos were fine but didn’t have the pizzazz of other favorites. Would recommend that they improve the texture by frying some of the components. Bar service was very prompt and responsive. Drinks came very quickly– would recommend the cucumber drink, but there were several others that were also good. A great way to spend the night!

This is an amazing spot in San Diego where my husband and I had a Valentine’s Day lunch. We started with there fresh shocked oysters and white sangria(which were great). We ended up ordering more oysters. The lunch some chips and Caesar salad with salmon was fabulous. It is evenly priced when compared to some places around here. Love it.

Discovered this restaurant while walking around downtown on a late Thursday afternoon, no wait and we requested to be seated outside to soak up the beautiful San Diego weather. What appealed to my boyfriend and I were the oysters — $ 1.50 each. They were fresh, cold and just delicious altogether. We’re not exactly seafood connoisseurs, but we really enjoyed it.

All I can say is wow and especially since the tastes of the good are still fresh in my mind. This place has it going on in so many delicious ways. Where to begin? Well, first the ambiance, very cool and San Diego, and what I’ve come to expect these last few months visiting here. Indoor and outdoor patio seating, it’s open, cozy, and new age stylish. Staff is super friendly and though I wondered briefly if they’d have us out in the hour we had available for lunch they completely came through for us on our lunch. The food is great, this is primarily a fish place(I almost ordered a burger out of laziness) instead I motivated mine eyes to really look at the menu and was pleasantly surprised. Lots to choose from for a lot of palates. I opted for the tequila lime shrimp linguine and let me say it was very good. While it probably could’ve been served hotter, it was warm and being that it was already a very warm day, I really didn’t mind. Flavors galore! The line was perfect without being too much and it was so decadent, flavorful, and amazing I had finished it before I knew I was finishing it. Very nicely balanced with shrimp too, they didn’t skimp at all, I had a bite of shrimp with every twirl of linguine on my fork and still had a half dozen left to nibble on once I’d finished my pasta. Finally, the pièce de résistance! Holy amazing pudding Batman! They have this salted caramel pudding that one of our group recommended we try and it was free with out check in on Unilocal. This stuff is like crack pudding and I am not even kidding. If I had been full beyond the point of human suffering, I don’t think I could’ve put this stuff down. Like my wife, when it arrived I was concerned I’d not like it. It arrived in a small mason jar(sort of a niche fitting way to serve it) but the pudding was 2⁄3 of the jar and there was a layer of caramel on top and a substantial pouring it was, I thought with that much caramel it would be over the top sweet; oh no it was not! The salt perfectly balanced that sweetness to perfection and it was a foodies dream and as close to taste bud nirvana as I may have ever been. Amazing! Get in here, enjoy some grub, and definitely get a crack pudding.

Very good food. The ceviche and guacamole appetizer was fresh and very good. The Brussel sprouts were good. Had a margarita and definitely had a lot of lime in it. Ordered the Dynamite crusted yellowtail. Fish was cooked perfectly. The sriracha sauce was almost too spicy for the dish and over powered it. But that said I still enjoyed it. Also got the shrimp linguine. It was very good. The butterscotch pudding was great. There was a lot of caramel on it. Probably wouldn’t order the lava cake as we did not great any«chocolate lava» from it. That said the cake was very moist. Overall it was a great place for a birthday dinner.

Overall: hit or miss. Occasion: Happy hour special on a Saturday night. Service: Smiley and prompt at first, but I stayed here for over an hour so that my non-happy-hour friends could dine with me, and when my friends joined me, the service was almost entirely absent. Food: $ 1.50/oyster for happy hour is pricey compared to local standards. They were good quality, however. And the cocktail sauce was made with real horseradish, piquant and sharp. Brussel sprouts were delicious but butter sauce with them was questionable. As in, what the heck is this doing in my dish, ruining the brussels sprouts? At least it was off to the side so I could ignore it. Raisins and bacon both sound good and do work well with the brussels sprouts, but flavor wise they just aren’t friends. Pecan-crusted brie served with crostini and fig jam were good. I could’ve skipped the crostini, though. They were dry, cold, and unappetizing. Lastly, the ceviche was terrible; the cucumbers that were cut in them were nasty bitter and ruined the subtle flavor I usually enjoy from ceviche seafood. In contrast, the chips and guac served with the ceviche were delicious. Ambiance: BEAUTIFUL! the best part. Chic modern with some rustic charm thrown in. Would be fun for a night out if you’re dining outside or romantic if you’re dining inside.

I honestly think I was fooled by the high reviews. My boyfriend and I decided to have a late dinner just a little after arriving to San Diego from Orange County to celebrate his birthday at Gaslamp. We decided on this restaurant so we could just hit the bars after eating and from what the reviews showed, I didn’t think i’d be so disappointed. It was pretty empty since we came a little less than 2 hours before closing, there were only 1 – 3 tables still being served from what I saw. It was restaurant week in San Diego, so they offered a $ 30 course which included starter soup or salad, an entrée and dessert. I decided to settle for the offer because the Mango BBQ Mahi Mahi I wanted to order was $ 28 alone, and it was also included in the offer so why not spare another $ 2 for some chowder and dessert too? Well, the chowder was nothing special and they were out of the two dessert’s offered on the menu including the well-reviewed butterscotch pudding, so that was disappointing. Instead, we got a caramel bourbon bread pudding. And before I even get to the main courses, we ordered 6 oysters and clearly, oysters are supposed to be served and eaten first. Well, our order never went through so we had to cancel on them when our other orders already came out. As for our entrées, my mahi mahi wasn’t all bad, but I find that mango salsa and bbq just don’t go together. Would I pay $ 28 to eat it again? No. My boyfriend ordered the fish and chips. The fish was all batter, and how does one go wrong making fries? They were just plain and dry. Besides the dessert taking forever to come out, it was probably the best course of all we had that night. By the end of dinner, we were literally the only people there and somehow they still messed up on our check by charging for two $ 30 courses when it should have had only been one $ 30 course. Honestly debating whether to come back and try their oysters during happy hour since we never even got our order for those. Definitely regret paying over $ 60 for such mediocre meals.

I cannot remember why or how this place got on my radar, but I’ve been wanting to try this place for a while. The host was extremely friendly and gave me the best seat in the house. As soon as I was done turning the table into my temporary desk with my laptop, notepad and calculator the server came to greet me with a smile and a water. When I asked him for a recommendation, without skipping a beat, he immediately said the BBQ Mango Mahi Mahi. He said it with such conviction I had to order it! The Mahi Mahi came out on a bed of buttery rice and grilled asparagus. The fish was smothered with BBQ sauce which was topped with a mango salsa. I absolutely loved the rice! I know this is a common way to serve rice but as a California native, I’ve always had my rice with soy sauce, curry or hot sauce. This was a nice change and it really hit the spot. The asparagus was perfectly prepared. Not too tough, but nice and crisp. The fish wasn’t dry nor underdone; it was very well-prepared. My only complaint is they really overdid it with the BBQ sauce. The only time you would want to smother something in sauce is if the chef overcooked the meat or the food quality is poor. And neither of these were the case. The server brought me a dessert, on the house. And contrary to what some believe, this had nothing to do with my Unilocal status as I did not check-in while I was here. The dessert of doom was their Butterscotch Pudding! Talk about rich! Wow! Thick Butterscotch pudding served in a cute mason jar covered by a thick layer of caramel. The caramel was a bit much for me, way too rich! So I scooped underneath it to get to the pudding, although I did consume a good portion of the caramel. My plan was to only take a few bites, just taste it(to not be rude, of course!). However my politeness took over my self-control and I ate over half the dessert. The only thing that stopped me from eating the entire thing was the pepper shaker. Although I LOVE pepper, I do not like it on my pudding. As a dietitian I definitely do NOT recommend this! Don’t get me wrong, it was delicious. But I’m pretty sure I’ll be regretting the indulgence for a few days. I am definitely a fan, but next time I will go for the grilled fish dish. I am looking forward to trying it without the overpowering BBQ sauce. And if you are into people-watching, sit outside. Located on Fourth and Broadway, it makes for a very interesting experience. Great entertainment when dining alone!

Yasss Happy Hour! This was my friends and my first stop on our happy hour adventure. It was a magnificent first stop indeeeed! $ 1 oysters. YAS. ~$ 3.50 for sangria. YAS. The complimentary butterscotch pudding with salted caramel(with Unilocal check-in). YAS. We also had the pistachio crusted brie that came with toasted pieces of bread and jam. When you run out of bread, they give you MORE which surprised me. I have to add the bread is buttered… and everything is better with butter. Happy hour!

#SDRW2016 — Spike Africa was a great choice for restaurant week. They offered dinner for $ 30. I gotta be honest, with so many restaurants in the Gaslamp, I didn’t think this restaurant was gonna last… BUT I’m so glad it’s lasted cause their food is definitely flavorful. First of all, the vibe of the place was very chill. The space they had was well used, with the bar in the middle, dining tables lined up near the window for parties of 2& a whole section in the back where we were seated. The place is well lit & clean with cute décor. They had a sea theme going cause well, duh, it’s a seafood spot. Our waitress was soft-spoken, but very nice. Started with salad, that a sardine on top. Cute touch. Tasted their clam chowder, very rich & yummy. Opted with the Mustard Glaze Salmon which came w/potatoes, green beans & tomatoes. It was amazing! The glaze was just right, didn’t overpower the very fresh salmon. If you like honey mustard, this is the dish for you… The green beans were perfect as well as the potatoes! Yumm, craving that now! It’s one of their best dish, so give it a try! Also had the Lobster Risotto & that too was tasty. Lots of lobster in it as well as shrimp. Great dish! Tasted their Butterscotch Pudding & the Chocolate Mousse! Both were excellent choices. If you like caramel(go w/the pudding) or chocolate(mousse). Came in little, cute mason jars. Side note– if you’re looking for a refreshing drink, try their«Sunny Day Sangria» [$ 9.25] – not included in the Restaurant Week menu. Very much enjoyed Restaurant Week at Spike Africa’s. It’s a great choice for seafood. I hear their Happy Hour is good, too. Might just stop by & give it a try!

After seeing our native San Diegan band Steam Powered Giraffe, I was energized and ready for more of downtown San Diego. We wandered here and there, and stopped at Spike Africa’s. I know them because they usually come to our Unilocal events and serve that delicious in house made butterscotch pudding with salted caramel to seal the deal. We had eaten before we arrived at Spreckels for the concert, and I just wanted something to nibble on. Out came the best waitress EVER. Dawnie!!! Dawnie was great. She knew about everything on the menu, she knew about the area. She was kind, patient, and catered to our needs. After much deliberation, we decided on the Mahi Mahi Nachos and the Fish Ceviche. Before I continue on… These two dishes are from the appetizers, and they were big enough to share between Hubbs and me. The Mahi Mahi Nachos were chosen by Hubbs. They had fish, real cheese(not nacho cheese), black beans, a mixture of nacho love. If you are a fan of nachos get these… the Mahi Mahi was really good! The chips are made in house. Let’s talk about my choice… I chose the Fish Ceviche… super super bueno. Fresh, light, and all mine… oh wait I had to share(but I did not want to). Those are also partnered with the chips made in house. ****Hubbs described the guacamole as, «fresh and savory — it was very good”**** Let’s about«sweets» baby… yes I went there… gotta love the 90’s. Well if you check in you get a free butterscotch pudding… so we also ordered the bread pudding. I would have to say that the shining star of Spike Africa’s is and will always be is the caramel/butterscotch pudding, however the bread pudding comes in near second. The place was jumping and music was playing. I was warm so I requested to sit is a tip to beware. It is downtown, so it will bound to be loud and resembling sounds of drunken young women and sirens… not all at the same time. Passersby will stand by the heat lamps for warmth, maybe a problem to you if they are loud or smoke… Inside décor was very industrial. I like that the outside seating because it has a large picture window looking into the restaurant so you can see the kitchen staff running arond taking care of business. We will come back Spikeys!

We went for lunch on a weekday. They have some $ 10 lunch specials. We got the fish & chips and california fish burrito and enjoyed both. The breading on the fish in both items appeared to be the same – and delicious! However, the actual piece of fish in the fish & chips was super tiny with a massive amount of breading. However… I’m not complaining too much, though, because the flavor was so good! Probably the best tasting fish & chips I’ve had in SD. This is a pretty good lunch option downtown considering their prices are quite a bit higher for non-lunch items.

I ordered the lobster roll again and the quality went dowwwwn. Overall the dish turned into the worst lobster roll I’ve ever had. We came for happy hour and I also thought the mahi taco and the mahi nachos were still not worth the HH cheap price. STILL — I give them 3 stars for their excellent bar service and of course their amazing deal for $ 1 kumiai oysters! So fresh and so good… and they offer this deal EVERYDAMNDAY from 3:30 — 6:30pm.

Awesome place for chowder and salad. The hospitality was also tops. We ordered a couple of salads, tacos, ceviche, wine, and fries. All were quite good. The Caesar came with an anchovy option, so I couldn’t resist. Nice! Chowder was also tasty. The croutons soaked up the broth rather brilliantly. The tacos are served with black beans, so opt out of that option if you’re like me and can’t stand the stuff. Not a big deal. The ceviche was a nice surprise, as it came served with guac. It probably could’ve been, how do you say, more fresh? Still tasty, but have had better and kickier. In all, convenient while in the area, great lighting, and really great service.

I love their happy hours here! It’s daily from 3 – 6:30pm, even on the weekends! I’ve come here many times but I usually end up with the same entrée: Dynamite Crusted Yellowtail. It’s a good portion of fish with a crab crust baked right on top. It comes with some veggies on the bottom of it, so it’s a pretty healthy meal in my book. I’ve asked a few times during lunch and they’ve always been able to still make it for me. Items on HH that I like: — The oysters are usually a solid bet for a dollar each. They rotate daily, so you just never know what you’ll get. — Pistachio Crusted Brie — its hard to not like Brie and the crust is a nice touch to it. — Crispy Brussel Sprouts — just the right amount of crisp, but the appetizer can be a little small. — $ 5 Craft beers! $ 6 for the premium craft beer. This is a great deal for downtown. Other favorites: –Clam chowder has good amounts of clam and not too creamy. Seems just right. — Tuna Poke — nice balance with the ginger, seaweed salad, and the crunch of the crispy wontons. The service is great here and everyone is really nice. Whether it’s at the bar or a server, I’ve never had a bad experience here. I’ll be back for more. See you guys there!

I’ve been wanting to try this place for a while and upon first visit I’d say it’s A Ok. Pros — nice menu with lots of options. Appreciate the lunch specials as well. Seating was comfortable albeit a little cold inside. Mehs– I had the grilled mahi sandwich and while the flavors were awesome, there was very little fish. The bun was delicious though. Fries were good but pretty standard. Cons — service was not great. It took us over 30 minutes to get food and there weren’t that many people in the restaurant. I felt our waiter didn’t check on us enough. The food also came out at weird times so that one person was left waiting for fries and others were done eating. I’d give it another try but just wasn’t blown away this first time.

We were walking around the gaslamp and decided this place looked nice enough to try — it wasn’t crowded because its not on the main drag but its light and bright and spacious. We sat at the bar and the bartender was really kind and attentive in recommending drinks and food options. I was in the mood for seafood so I had the lobster roll and hubby had fish and chips. I wouldn’t consider myself an authority on lobster rolls but mine was filled to the brim with tender chunks and it was delicious. The hubs was a big fan of his entrée too — it was a huge portion and he ate it all which is a great sign cuz he is British so he knows good fish and chips! The bar is well appointed with TVs and quick service and nice drink specials. Literally the best $ 2 mimosa I’ve ever had. Would definitely come back!

Fast service! As soon as we walked to the door we were greeted and seated for lunch! Typically lunch is rushed and can be the worst choice for a place like this. We immediately ordered and received our food in less than 15 minutes! This place is really good! The seasoned fish and chips are to die for! If you are here visiting like me, make sure you try this tasty place! My guest and I decided to enjoy lunch on the patio! The best decision ever! It’s sunny here today so make your way here!

Tasty, but incredibly overpriced. We had: – Mahi Nachos — $ 23 – Sea Scallops — $ 35 – Lobster Roll $ 20 – Ceviche — $ 13 These prices are expensive to start, but even more when you see how much food you get. The $ 35 Sea Scallops had four small scallops. They were delicious, but thats almost $ 9/scallop! The ceviche seemed like a good price, but it was more salsa and guacamole than actual fish. The nachos were delicious and sizeable, but for $ 23 I’d hope so! Service was friendly, though, and there’s a nice vibe inside.

Awesome deals for happy hour, but everything else is clearly overpriced. If you come in for happy hour before 6:30, you can enjoy some great sangria(tastes great but pretty watered down) for less than $ 4, and brussels sprout. Some popular apps are half off. The service is great, but unfortunately the entrees are not. The lobster roll was about 85% roll and 15% mix of shrimp and lobster and 3 thin slices of avocado. It was extremely bland and trying to take a bite of it was just comical because the bread was SO thick. I can’t capitalize«SO» enough. The cod fish plate was way too overpriced($ 30) for a piece of fish barely the size of your palm. The fish itself was cooked really well but the plate was just covered in french fries. if you check in on the Unilocal mobile app, you will get a free butterscotch pudding, but it is wayyyyyyyyy too sweet for my liking and was almost like a milk than pudding on the night I was there…

This place came as a really nice surprise. It’s in the Gaslamp Quarter but, kind of shoved out of the craziness. Most importantly, the fish was fantastic. They serve the largest fillets I’ve seen with some wonderful sauces and sides. Everything that came out of their kitchen was delicious. I didn’t order the clam chowder, but I tried some of my mom’s and coming from someone who is not a clam chowder fan, I could’ve had the whole bowl and the jumbo shrimp cocktail was the right amount of sweetness and bite to the shrimp. Having sung all these praises, I have to say that my actual entrée was probably my least favorite. I ordered the Dynamite Crusted Yellowtail and while it was definitely not a bad choice, I felt like it didn’t hold a candle to my mom’s Macadamia Nut Crusted Mahi. Now that was something to write home about. The yellowtail was fresh and delicious, but I think the crab on the crust made it a little too fishy for me. This has nothing to do with how it was prepared, just a matter of personal taste. We also tried the Brussel sprouts and they were great. And then there was butterscotch pudding. No questions. Just do. Best of all, Spike’s didn’t price gouge the way they could for serving such wonderful, fresh seafood. I will definitely be heading back here for a casual dinner or lunch next time I’m in the area.

Nice spot for fish tacos and oysters downtown. Located across from Horton Plaza, it’s a pretty nice spot if you’re hitting up the Lyceum or want to skip the HP food court. WHENYOUGO– The Hood Canal oysters are the schnizz but eh run $ 2.50 a piece. I know they have to pay for some expensive real estate but $ 22.50 for a double Kettle One? Yeah, yeah I know– Gaslamp prices. Beers are reasonable, especially at HH. Just skip the liquor and your wallet will thank you.

AMAZING! One of my favorite restaurants in San Diego! If your going to Spike Africa you should try to go for happy hour, they have great deals for their apps. The restaurant is very inviting and would be a great date spot. If you get the opportunity I would recommend sitting outside on the patio. As we were about to order, I asked our waiter for recommendations and he recommended anything from the Fresh Fish menu. I had the Fresh Alaskan Cod which was PERFECT!!! It had a little black pepper on it which gave it the kick that it needed. The Alaskan Cod comes with a dipping sauces on the side which tasted good, but i felt that the fish was perfect without the sauce. I also had the Blackened Mahi Taco and the Fresh Fish Ceviche which was VERYVERYGOOD! I would highly recommend this restaurant to anyone in the downtown area. CHECKIN: If you check in on Unilocal you get a free Butterscotch Pudding. I read the previous reviews and people love it, I thought it was WAYTOOSWEET!(But its FREE lol) I would rate Spike Africa as follows: Food is 5 stars, the Atmosphere is 4.5 stars, the Service was 5 stars and the Prices were 4 stars. The views expressed are of my own and are my true personal experience at this establishment. My personal experience may not reflect this actual establishment, their quality or someone else’s experience at the establishment.

Decided to come here for San Diego Restaurant Week #SDRW to try this place based on my friends recommendation. We were seated quickly and the service was good… I was looking forward to trying this place and the reviews had a lot of good things to say… I ordered off the menu, my friend ordered the SDRW menu and here’s what we tried. 1st Course: Cevice — the fish was tasty and it came with guacamole. We liked the way it was served since the bowl was half and half. That way, if you don’t like cevice you can still enjoy the guacamole! I give this dish 4 stars 2nd Course: Scallops — my scallops were overcooked. The plate was drenched in oil and it lacked a bit of flavor. Compared to so many other scallop dishes I have eaten in my lifetime… this was not the best. 3 stars Split Chicken — cooked to perfection and spiced nicely served on a bed of veggies and butter rice. This by far was the best dish of the night! 5 stars… maybe 6! :) 3rd Course:(which we took to go along with our leftovers because this was a lot of food!) Butterscotch Pudding — sweet and decadent. My favorite part was the caramel sauce! 5 stars Chocolate Torte — sweet and rich… if you love chocolate you will love this dish! 4 stars. We had so much food we were able to eat lunch the next day on this meal! Totally worth it! And our server gave us a free drink/dessert to come back… since they weren’t serving the fish and chips that we planned to order. I’ll be back to use the Spike Buck and to try more on the menu!
