The lady that cuts hair is awesome. I go and tell her to cut my hair anyway that she wants to and 10 out of 10, I come out a bombshell. I have been coming to her for the past 5 years. It’s a bit pricey and sometimes she is busy but once you set the schedule, you are set to go. The price is a bit pricey, but its similar compared to super cuts and other places but the quality is way better. Definitely a 5 star on this one

I’m a guy and I usually don’t think much when I want to get my hair cut. Before Smile Hair, I would go to Super Cuts or Sport Clips and just get it done. It was usually a quick buzz around the sides and trim the top. Teresa at Smile Hair probably gave me one of the most attentive hair cuts in a long time, and I really appreciate it. Teresa had such attention to detail and didn’t try to rush. It might of been because I was the only one there at the time(lunch hour) but I was amazed how much care she took with her scissors in trimming even one tiny strand of hair to get it looking even. I came out loving what cut and I intend to come back here as my primary stylist. This may be a Korean salon but Teresa can speak fluent English and is very skilled at what she does.

The boyfriend and I went after bringing a friend to Smile Hair for his cut. I thought, «Hey, not bad» and just went on Unilocal to make an appointment for the two of us. After reading some reviews(thanks Yoon!), I find Julia’s number(858) 345‑0485 and make an appointment. So we go in on a Saturday and she quickly seats me. I just wanted a trim and bangs redone(they grew out awkwardly when I got my previous haircut done, but they used to be cute). Got that done like I wanted and it was $ 35. A little much for a trim and bangs… so I’m like eh, but she did a decent job. She was pretty attentive and listened to what I wanted. My boyfriend’s hair is thick and semi-wavy so she thinned it out & did a great job for him. His haircut was $ 22 or something. Also, I waited over a week to post so I can note how my hair looks after. Because she gave me a more Asian trim(thinned out layers), sometimes my hair freaks OUT since I live in La Jolla and it just doesn’t like the humidity. Therefore, it’s often slightly puffy even when I straighten it. All in all, I think she’s a good hair stylist, but I think I’ll still look around. As for my boyfriend’s cut, it’s really worth it. Men, you should all come here and get good-lookin’ cuts.

I’m sture all those reviews about Julia is helpful… but damn. I read them a day too late. I seriously have not had such a horrible haircut in the last 24 years of my life! The woman, Kate, was an extremely kind hairstylist, but I don’t think she had any idea what she was doing! She went scissor happy and snipped off about 12 inches of my hair when I asked for a THREEINCHTRIM and LONGLAYERS. My hair was very damaged towards the bottom because of previous bleaching and coloring, and I wanted MOST of the color trimmed off. Her first cut, she did a quick cut to all of my colored hair, taking off at least 6 inches from there. I thought, ok… maybe I can live with 6 inches shorter. but she just kept going. I don’t know if she was trying to lag time and make this a long«meticulous» hour hairt appointment, but she just kept thinning it and layering it. My first layer starts at my cheekbone on ONESIDEONLY. It’s completely uneven all over my head that I can’t even imagine how I would ask another stylist to fix it. She kept straightening my wavy hair, giving me this illusion that it was longer than it seems. I have a natural wave on my hair so when I went home to wash it and blowdry it myself(I like an easy maintainable look and it looks HORRENDOUS. I’m leaving my hair tied up for another 2 months. And who said it was $ 20? She charged me $ 40! If I wanted a bad haircut, I coulda taken a scissor and chopped off all my color for free.

I have been getting my hair cut here for a year now and i LOVE it. It is very hard to find people who give good«Asian-style» hair cuts. I get my hair cut by Julia(she has her own phone line) and she never once uses an electric buzzer. Her attention to detail with her scissors really gives my hair a natural look. PLus the 20bucks includes a shampoo wash. the only place i go to for haircuts in SD

Mad props to Yoon P. for such a helpful review! So I called Julia’s direct line and set up an appointment with her. Two days later I arrive at Smile Hair a little before 6pm — I’m the lone customer and Julia’s the only stylist there. I thought, oh my — did she really stay out this late for me? So just the convenience factor of being able to schedule a late appointment with her(since I don’t get off work ’til five o’clock) is a major plus. Julia asked me how I wanted my hair done, and I said, «Like yours!» cos she had these really pretty layers. She went on to work on mine, taking the time to cut, thin, and perfect my haircut. She even styled my hair with some yummy-smelling smoothing serum and a hair straightener. My locks sure looked flawless. I told her, «If I could only do the same thing at home!» My hair ended up a little shorter than I expected, but I decided the length was alright since I figured the layers will grow out eventually, and hopefully they’ll still look great. I used to go to Moga Salon… but I think I’ve found my new favorite stylist. And a very nice one at that, too.

I used to frequent Moga Salon right around the corner until my stylist left to live in Japan, so I was in need of a new place to go. After about of year of testing out new places, I think I’ve found the one thanks to the reviews on Unilocal. I’m not exactly sure which stylist I got, but let me say she was EXCELLENT. The only problem is she didn’t speak much English… very little to be honest. Me not knowing any Korean had to improvise and try to explain what kind of haircut I wanted. All she replied was«Short?». I nervously answered«Yes». During the 30 – 40 min of cutting my hair, I was worried if she knew what I liked but I hoped for the best. However, the way she was so meticulous in cutting my hair and triple checking each strand of hair to make sure it was perfect eased my anxiety. The result was awesome to say the least. She knew exactly what I wanted and something that would look good on me. The price was what put a smile to my face as it was very cheap as well. My conclusion? I would definitely recommend this place if you know how to speak Korean. I felt a little awkward not being able to converse with the employees while I got my haircut, or being able to transmit what I wanted done to my hair. However, if you want a cheap place and are willing to give this place a shot with the language barrier, I’d say go for it.

I get my haircuts here all the time! The korean lady named Kate is GREAT! She can cut hair however you want. I always get a japanese hair style cut where its kinda volumized at top and kinda relaxes at the bottom. I come in, get seated, get my hair washed, cut, dried, styled, scented etc. Perfect :) the price was worth it too.

The owner Kate is a great stylist. Very detail oriented. It is hard to find someone good that can cut Asian hair. Kate is awesome. I really recommend that people try her out.

Nothing gets better than asians cutting asian hair.(sometimes) My one and only friend at Mesa College suggested this place. I, however did not get my haircut here, but Maria A. did. It’s owned by Koreans, it kind of sucks when you don’t understand what they’re saying. If it’s good, bad, or has nothing to do about you. Maria A.(or Sug, short for Sugar[that’s what I call her]) wanted a new haircut, even though she just got one 2 – 3 weeks ago. So I told her about Smile Hair. For $ 35 she got shampoo’d, blow dried, straightened, cut AND a «special» eyebrow trim. The lady cutting her hair asked, «Do you wax your eyebrows?» I couldn’t help but laugh, but that was neat of her to trim her brows, for no extra charge. In the end, my friend ended up with a great hair cut. I suggested going to WOW! and kept throwing up the peace sign because she lookes super asian now. If I wasn’t going to get my hair cut at Rinse(in september) I’d probably go here.
