For $ 10 I got a plate of fried chicken, a side of macaroni salad, green beans, a slice of corn bread, and a glass of koolaid. Service was quick and staff was very friendly. This place only seats up to about maybe less than 10? Great comfort food.

This place is GOOD! I’ve lived in san diego most my life and was just introduced to this place. It’s like you’re eating in their personal kitchen. Large portions that leave you full and you even get a glass of Kool aid to wash it down! I will be back and tell everyone I know. Menu changes daily depending on what sister pee wee wants to cook. And sister pee wee was there, she’s a beautiful petite woman that reminds you of your grandma you can’t wait to see and give a big hug.

I stopped by this place while I was getting my car worked on down the street. OMGSOGOOOOOOOD!!! the portions were huge, the corn bread was EXTREMELY good, yum yum yummmm. I wish I had come after a fast or something so I could have eaten more. The menu is short and simple, I will definitely be back and I recommend this place to anyone looking for some good soul food. This place has been around for a long time, you can tell by all the pictures, bumper stickers, and news articles posted up around the shop. I also saw Sister Pee Wee driving her catering truck the other day up the 15, looks like they can cater your next event!

If you want down to earth great soul food… this is it! As soon as you step inside, you feel as if you’re in the south, in a grandma’s house in the south. The hospitality is just wonderful, as you joke and laugh with the owner and staff. you are welcomed as family… but let’s talk about the food. Just amazing. If you’re looking for food that you will find a restaurant… forget it. This isn’t it. If you’re looking for food that is cooked with love and care, like what you will find at a grandma’s…this is it. The smothered chick is to die for, flavorful and tender. The greens are exactly what you will expect, tender with a hint of bitterness. Mac and cheese… looks like it came out of the blue box… but that’s not a bad thing. The rice… the rice is amazing! All served with a side of red Hawaiian Punch or Kool-laid. Not for everybody, but if you’re looking to eat down to earth great southern food like what you will find in somebody’s house… this is it!

I took the opportunity of a free afternoon today to visit Sister Pee Wee’s Soul Food Restaurant. When I walked in the place was empty except for sister Pee Wee and her associate, whose name I unfortunately can not remember but was a sweet lady nonetheless. Sister Pee Wee greeted me with a smile and I immediately felt at home in this tiny little place. I ordered the fried chicken, which was amazing! Along with the chicken came rice and gravy, green beans and corn, and a fabulous square of cornbread. I was also offered a fruit juice immediately upon entering the place, which was delicious as well. I cannot say enough about this quaint little spot in east San Diego. I will definitely be back! I’m a fan!

I absolutely LOVE this place and adore Sister Pee Wee. Menu is whatever she feels like cooking for the day and is written on the whiteboard outside. 10 bucks will get you a healthy sized plate and 2 yummy sides and a side of corn bread. Her food has never disappointed me whenever I’m craving a home cooked meal. If you go too late however she just might be closed(ran out of food) since she cooks once in the a. m so what she has is what she has and that’s what I love about this place. She has the sweetest personality and the best stories to share. While sitting at her counter eating I once told her how good her gravy is and how I could never get mine to match and she proceeded to go grab the stuff she uses and showed me her way of making it! I don’t know how much longer she’ll be open but I hope it’s a long while. Anytime I’m in the area I make it a point to stop by.

Fried chicken has many variations, but not all of them are good. This establishment boasts 11 different forms of fried chicken, wow. Traveling with three friends we decided we would order one of each and have our own tasting party. The staff sighed slightly, but fulfilled our request. If I were to do a blind taste test, I could pick out three of the eleven as having different flavors. The chicken is good, it’s just not memorable. The server was sweet, she played along and helped us identify the flavors we could not place. O wpuld say go once and you’re good.

I’m only giving four stars because of the décor — this place is tiny and would fairly be described as «a whole in the wall», maybe even a little rum down. I was almost a little afraid the first time I ate there. However I’m really glad I did because this place is now a must do on my list when I’m in the area around lunch time… AWESOME food, authentic, really nice employees. Did I say the food is awesome? I’ve had the fried chicken, ribs, sooo good! Each plate comes with a glass of Kool-aid, cornbread, black eyed peas, collared greens, wow. Go there

Had the pleasure of experiencing Sister Pee Wee’s today. It was AWESOME. The atmosphere reminded me of of home. She cooks the fish as ordered. There’s a reason why she’s been business for 52 years. The best soul food in SD so far.

You have got to go see sister pee wee immediately! As soon as you walk in she pours you some kool aid out of a jug and slaps a butter laden piece of cornbread on your plate. Daily menu is written in marker on a board. All plates come with potato salad, collard greens + Mac & cheese. The fried chicken is A-mazing. The roast beef is fantastic. And the fresh prepared catfish is so damn good. If you have never been here you gotta go. Just make sure you roll up your windows & lock your car doors when you go in to eat ;)

And I thank you for bringing me here For showing me home For singing these tears Finally I’ve found that I belong here Depeche Mode — Home This place isn’t like KFC with nice shiny plastic glistening like the sun. Looking for a place that gets a face lift every 10 years to maintain the shiny plastic? Just keep on moving. This place is more like home. Take a look at the walls and you can see how the years have gone by for Sister Pee Wee and her family. Wish my place was as cool with the old Coke machine in the corner. I was impressed by Sister Pee Wee’s southern hospitality from how she found me a comfy spot to sit to making sure I had something to quench my thirst and fill my stomach. None of that here’s your menu and can I take your order stuff. I asked if I could have 3 pieces of fried chicken all dark meat and Sister Pee Wee thought she could accommodate me. She brought out my plate promptly and I breathed deep that heavenly aroma of freshly fried chicken. The batter and the chicken appeared similar to KFC original recipe. At first it was tasting like KFC as well but then the more subtle flavors of the spices hit me. It’s hard to describe how good this chicken is compared to KFC. Think about when you first made love to the one you love. The smells and excitement before you touch and then the complex flavors as you taste each other. This chicken is like that. You remember those times when you weren’t at the top of your game, you were drunk and lonely, it was closing time, and there was one last girl at the bar in the same circumstances? KFC chicken is like that. As I was leaving Sister Pee Wee thanked me for coming by and invited me to stop in again. I will. I have found my home.

HOLYFRIEDCHICKENANDSMOTHEREDPORKCHOPS Batman!!! Sister Per Wee is a doll! Stop on in, grab a seat at the counter and Sister Pee Wee will hook you up! All plates are $ 10 and she piles on the food! Included in that price is fresh baked corn bread, unlimited glasses of fruit punch and stories from Sister Pee Wee herself! Best deal in town! The menu changes daily and it’s cash only! The fried chicken was voted(among my posse of 6) to be some of the best ever had in San Diego! And that’s coming from REAL fried chicken lovers! And let me tell you, I’ve never been a fan of pork chops but these literally fell off the bone and could be cut with a spoon! So good! I’ll be back Sister Pee Wee, oh I’ll be back!

**************************** QUIZ: NAMETHISMOVIE! ******************************* JAKE B.: Got any fried chicken? ARETHA F.: Best damn chicken in the state. JAKE B: Bring me four fried chickens and a Coke. ARETHA F.: You want chicken wings or chicken legs? JAKE B: Four fried chickens and a Coke. ELWOOD B.: And some dry white toast please. ARETHA F: Y’all want anything to drink with that? ELWOOD B: No Ma’am. ********************************************************************************** My friends and I were on a «A mission from Gawd» for some for legit soul food… Like Jake B, I got the $ 10 Fried Chicken plate, but I did not get a Coke. I also split a $ 15 Catfish plate with a friend, and stole a bite of the $ 10 Smothered Pork Chops plate from a friend. ENTREES: Fried Chicken: Delicious…2 Thighs and a Leg, tasty enough to make Colonel Sanders piss himself. Fried Catfish: Delicious… cut up and deep fried filet pieces. But for $ 5 bucks less… see above, or below. Smothered Pork Chops: Delicious(I stole a bite). No knife needed, the pork is so tender it scoops off with a fork! SIDES: All the traditional, yummy sides are included with your plate! Collard Greens, Mac N Cheese, Rice N Gravy, and Cornbread. «Juice»: Its actually artificial fruit punch. I think its Kool Aid or HiC! :D In conclusion… Thank you Sister Pee Wee, thank you… Gawd Bless you! DISCLOSURE: This is not La Jolla/Coronado/Rancho Santa Fe. I did not see a single white or Asian person(except my buddy and I) on Imperial Ave. This also is NOT Mister A’s/Morton’s/Downton Abbey… no white linen tables or snobbery. Just one long community counter that seats about 12, personable folks, and SOULFOOD! :D

I have lived most of my life in the DEEPSOUTH, and this is pretty good stuff, but I’ve had way better. For California, it’s as good as you will get outside of someone’s private home. The only other soul food restaurant I have found that compares is Bonnie Jean’s, which I highly recommend. Also, it is the most food you will see anywhere for only $ 10 a plate!(not sure if they take cards, but I recommend carrying cash just in case) Also, FYI, I always have lunch at off-peak hours, so I have no idea if they have a lunch rush, but when I walked in it was empty. I had no trouble parking right in front. When I sat down, Sistah PeeWee was givin it good to her grand-kids at the counter. They were home early from school that day and her granddaughter wasn’t taking her multiplication homework seriously enough. Her grandson was eating a fried chicken dinner that looked pretty good so that’s what I ordered. Fried chicken: great! I can’t even believe how much meat was on those three chicken thighs and the crispy skin could give the Colonel a run for his money. Green beans: you have to like them soft like they make them in the south or you’ll be upset. These were slathered in what I can only assume is bacon grease, salt and pepper. Delicious! Yams: super sweet candied and perfect to go with the rest of the salty plate. Probably a little too sweet for most people, but they were pretty small. Rice and gravy: delicious as well– the gravy was a little soupy, but all the better to drown the rice in, right? It had large chunks of beef in it too. The portion of rice was enormous. Cornbread: Giant slice for sopping up the extra gravy, but just average as far as flavor, texture etc. Hot sauce: there were two and all I can say is stick with the Rooster. Overall, a very satisfying meal especially since I was ravenous at 2 in the afternoon. I did have some question as to whether the vegetables were bulk/canned — the green beans were just a bit too perfectly cut and sized identically. Also, the yams could have been canned for all that sweet sticky syrup. Eating at the counter was fun and had a homey feel. There was an elderly African American gentleman at the counter just hangin and we chatted a bit until another man came in and started arguing with him and Sister Pee-Wee and her son about football. Sister PeeWee had her grandson busing the counter and serving me water. She’s a very savvy woman who knows exactly how to do her job and can tell you how to do your job as well! LOL! Although this place is in the ‘hood, I felt totally safe as a lone female sitting at the counter enjoying my food. Don’t try coming here with a huge group because there aren’t any tables, and only about seating for 12 at the counter. Will be back next time I’m in the area– I want to try the smothered steak next!
