I was volunteering at an event during the intermission at the Don Powell Theatre. I got a chance to see the second half of the play: ALICE: Curiouser and Curiouser! An adaptation of Lewis Carroll’s Alice In Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass. Overall, I was really impressed with the production and theatre. Pros: –considering this is mostly a student production, its quite professionally done, with good acoustics, great lighting and nice costumes –talented cast(again mostly students, I believe) with good dance skills and really good voices(the show wasn’t billed as a musical, but there was a lot of singing, music and dancing which made it fun and lively) –nice theatre; quaint, clean and not a bad seat in the house –you can fill out the survey in the program which enters you into a contest to win a pair of tickets to another show –inexpensive tickets(about $ 15 per show) and definitely worth the price –most of the cast congregated in the lobby after the show for a meet and greet Cons: –venue is a little tricky to find –the small size of the theatre(and, I imagine, limited budget) means a small stage, which is nice cause you can see everything, but limits the cast size and special effects etc(ie. no big dance numbers) –since the cast is mostly students, I believe, I can see some plays not working very well if they have limited diversity of performers(ie. no elderly people, etc) –parking in the area(its on the SDSU campus) can be tricky, especially on the weekend and you have to pay $ 1 per hour(which is less than most most concert/theatre venues) –there is no concession stand available, although I’m sure there are vending machines and eateries throughout the campus –very limited runs(a few days), so it can be difficult to schedule into your schedule –the play was a bit difficult to follow and a little obscure; some random 60’s era costumes thrown in, and kind of dark for what was billed a family-friendly show They have a few different shows throughout the year, the next one being The Great American Trail Park Musical which looks really good. I’ll try to check it out! Its a shame they don’t do more advertising, because the theatre was only half full… I would have never known about this place if I wasn’t volunteering… I bet if more people knew about it, the increased ticket revenue could help them further improve.
