Red Roof Inn San Diego – Downtown

This place is within walking place to gaslamp but not as expensive. You get what you pay for. Rooms where small but staff was friendly and the room was clean. Some minor cosmetic repairs could help spruce it up but everything functioned and was clean.

Horrible. Granted it was the least expensive hotel in the area; however, I wouldn’t mind paying an extra $ 20 or $ 50 to stay in a quieter and cleaner hotel. I was unable to sleep due to the room being located next to a busy street. While trying to sleep, I could hear loud cars and trucks driving by and the toilets flushing in other rooms. It smelled gross as well. Holiday Inn Express is across the street and the cost isn’t much of a difference. I’d suggest staying there instead.

I went thru AA to book this hotel for a last minute trip. The pictures on the website had the rooms looking clean and no carpet which is a plus. The front desk agent was very friendly and professional.
Our room was on the 3^rd floor but there was an elevator. We open the room door and was immediately assaulted by the odor of bug spray. The bedding was worn and frayed. The TV was stuck on one station and we realized that someone had unhooked the cable. It took the hotel 2 days to get a refrigerator in the room that worked. All of the broken refrigerators were lined up next to the room door.
The hotel gets 1 star just for location, 2 star for the desk staff but a negative 4 stars just for the experience.

I recently stayed at Red Roof for a conference in San Diego. The location was good and the price was right so I figured I would give it a try. It will probably be the only time I stay there.
First, I will start off with the good. The staff was incredibly friendly, professional, and courteous. Check-​in and check-​out was easy. The breakfast they serve, while not extensive, was pretty good. They offered juice, milk, coffee, bagels, breakfast pastries, yogurt, toast, waffles, and cereal. I thought this was nice especially for the price of the room. The room also had laminate floors, which is better than carpet, in my opinion. We didn’t use it, but there is also room service available.
Now for the bad. Parking is pretty limited and a permit is required. Some of the spaces are awkward to get in and out of. The room seemed like it had been cleaned, but it wasn’t in good shape. There were dings and scratches on the doors and walls. The sheets had stains and just felt grimy. The bathroom had a strange smell. Almost like mildew or stagnant water. The bathtub was tiny and was horribly stained. It looked like it had never been scrubbed before not to mention that the water wouldn’t drain quickly when running water. The worst part was the bugs. We saw multiple baby cockroaches in the bathroom and in the room. It was disgusting. I’m not too squeamish so I managed to get through my stay, but I definitely wouldn’t do it again. I know you get what you pay for, but I think this hotel needs some serious work.
So overall, I gave the Red Roof Inn two stars — one for staff and one for breakfast.

Booked a room here last minute using the hotel tonight app. The price was decent for a last minute booking in Downtown San Diego. The room for one night was $ 101. The downside is that they charge for parking which comes out to be $ 17.50 but at least your car is safe in a spot off the street. They had underground parking as well.
The room itself was just as expected. A lot of the reviews made it seem worse than it was. I did bring my own sheets cause some of the reviews made me paranoid. But the room was clean. The TV and ac worked well. It’s not the nicest room but it had the necessities.
They had a continental breakfast that didn’t offer much but it’s nice that they had one. Their biggest plus is the staff. The receptionist was so friendly and accommodating.
Overall not the worst hotel but not the best. Good option for a one night stay.

What a dump! This is a $ 50-​$ 60 room even by San Diego standards that I paid over $ 200 for. Awful bed (broken box springs), limited parking, parking garage not close to room, dirty sheets, dirty towels, tiny shower.
No swimming pool, so at least that’s advertised accurately.
The staff were very friendly.
The room was recently renovated, but poorly (gaps in the laminate flooring, spongy shower floor, broken bed).
I wouldn’t stay here again if it was free.

Me and my girlfriend stayed in room 320 for two nights on our trip to San Diego, at the 719 Ash Street Location. I chose it because of the «competitive rate» and the laminate floors. The pictures made it seem much better than it was.
The bed was had a mattress pad and a flat sheet that did not fit all the way around. The covers and the pillowcases seemed to be poorly washed and had stains which seemed to be from makeup, or blood. My girlfriend got a small rash after sitting in it for ten minutes on the first night, even though I am the one who tends to be allergic to everything.
The shower faucet felt as if it was going to burst out of the wall, the water pressure was very low, and the floor on the shower floor was wobbly. The towels and walls also seemed to be covered in some sort of makeup, or blood, that seemed to be washed and cleaned off poorly.
The fuse box cover was open when we came into the room and left untouched for our entire stay. The best part was probably the flat-​screen TV, the small fridge, which should be a standard for any room anyway.
I would rate this inn on the same level as a motel 6 and I would definitely seek a better deal on a hotel on Groupon on my next trip to SD. After a little bit of research, even with my AAA discount, the hidden fees for parking, the safe, and whatever else I was charged for adds up to to the same price as a deal on a nice hotel in the same area or even a better one.

We got a room, on a saturday … $ 290 a Night ! So NOT worth it ! We got a room with dirty sheets, they did change our room for us but that was gross. There was hair in the sheets & they were stained. ewwww. My friend and I really thought the hotel was incredibly over priced for what we got … the Hard rock has rooms for that price !!! Nothing special at all… I will not be staying there again. my first time in san diego was not what I expected due to this incident. I do not recommend this place, sorry.

Stayed here for two nights on a trip to San Diego. I chose this place strictly for price considerations. It had one of the lowest prices of any hotel in the area.
The area is good. It’s about a mile walk down to the convention center and waterfront. You can walk to the Gaslamp district, which is on Fifth Street on the way down to the waterfront. Petco Park is also within walking distance. I forego a rental car during this trip since the hotel was so close to everything.
The hotel itself is a very basic motel with no interior hallways. The rooms surround the parking lot in the middle. The appearance is the exterior is slightly run down.
The rooms were in OK condition. I didn’t like the fact that the were not carpeted but instead had some kind of a laminate wood floor. The water faucet in the bathroom was very old and difficult to pull up.
What was annoying was that they had a coffee maker in the room, but they didn’t leave any cups. I had to go down to the lobby each morning to get a cup. I informed the staff of this, but on my second night there still wasn’t any cup left in my room. It was interesting that they left a lid for the cup but no cup itself.
I am not squeamish about small bugs, but I question the cleanliness of this hotel because I saw a small roach scurrying across the floor.
One positive was the free wifi in the hotel. I got a good signal in my room, and it was nice that it didn’t require me to log in every time I turned on one of my devices.
The room was reasonable quiet, so it was possible to get a good night’s rest here.
If you’re looking to save money and don’t mind budget accommodations, this is an ok place to consider.

Stayed here for Conic Con weekend. Very reasonable price, considering other options in the area. I was also pleased to find inexpensive parking nearby. The room was clean, the beds were comfy, and they kept our towels stocked. It’s relatively close to the Convention center, but that twenty minute jaunt feels longer each morning. Convenient location. I’ll probably be back.

Although the staff were very kind, the property was horrific. Upon arrival the room had a nasty smell. The pictures on the internet are heavily photoshopped. The bathroom was so small, being 5’8, I barely fit in it. The shower could not determine if it were a mini bath or mini shower. When we sat on the bed, it was hard and uncomfortable, the floor would have been more comfortable, if it weren’t for all the cockroaches in the room. Needless to say, we would never return, even if it were free.

Red Roof Inn San Diego «Downtown» is located near Gaslamp Quarter within 10 – 15 minute walk, but further as in next to the El Cortez Hotel. I stayed here for Padres Home Opener Weekend which made all hotels a bit pricier and was lucky to find this spot. The pricing was decent for the fine location!
:) I got lucky with my one bedroom and it was on the first floor on the corner which gave more privacy as the entrance is hidden as it is tucked in deeper so no view of the parking lot, neighbors, etc. The room had a queen bed which was open and airy, along with a couch, a desk office area, TV, and Free WiFi. The layout of the bathroom is more of a narrow hallway to get to the sink area, but all in all everything was A-​ok!
I would definitely stay here again and recommend this for people looking to stay near Gaslamp/​Downtown and who are willing to walk a bit, or just use a Lyft/​Über for those who don’t want to get their cardio in. ;)

Original room 118 given to us — the door was open and the light didn’t work. 2^nd room given to us 105 didn’t have a lock chain and the bottom of the bathroom door was damaged. My wife and I suffered from bug bites during our sleep on a bed that was very uncomfortable at best. When I told the front desk about the issues all they could say was «oh ok» and there was no apology. To top it off the coffee was watery and I actually threw up within an hour of eating their breakfast. I used Red Roof Inn years ago and liked them, but never again! A Motel 6 is probably better.

Let me start by saying, I’m not picky when it comes to hotels. Especially when I am on a budget and only staying for a night. Ok with that said…
Pros: easy parking, good location! Very close to Gaslamp and all the interesting stuff. Decent price. We only paid $ 10 for parking because our check –in was late (see cons)
Cons: our check-​in was suppose to be at 2pm, we showed up around 3pm and we were told our room was not going to be ready until 4pm. When we finally did check-​in our parking was reduced to $ 10 instead of $ 16. Our room had the smallest shower ever! It was fine for my height and size (5’4) but my boyfriend who is 5’11 had to bend down to wash his hair. Our toilet was not a usual house or hotel toilet it was a public restroom toilet. Weird. My last complaint which is probably the most important to me were the beds. They were so old and creeky they are probably older than me. My back is really hurting today from sleeping in it. Everytime I rolled over I woke myself up because the bed was so loud.
All in all I would not stay here again but it did its job for a last minute trip. but my poor back ! :(
**I really do think management/​whoever owns this hotel should really evaluate their rooms and see it from a customer’s point of view. the beds seriously need to be replaced**

This is the worst hotel I’ve ever stayed in. Rooms are really small, the AC doesn’t work, majority of the electrical outlets don’t work either. The ceiling is cracking, and the shower doesn’t have any water pressure. This place is a dump.

For $ 51 it wasn’t awful. But that’s only because I had a $ 50 credit with Hotel Tonight. Didn’t even plan on staying the night in SD (otherwise would have booked somewhere a lot nicer. It was nearly midnight and we stayed out drinking longer than planned, so we needed a place to sleep.
It was clean, but the bed only had 3 legs, the TV was missing, it was a double room with the 2^nd bed missing, and there was no hot water when we got there. They turned the hot water back on in the morning though.
Had I paid the full price of $ 100, I wold have been annoyed at the condition of the room. I will not stay here again, it was a last minute thing.
However, the man at the front desk was very nice. He waved our $ 16 parking fee since Hotel Tonight was taking awhile.

This place was very much a pleasant surprise for the cost and location.
I don’t think the other negative reviews really do this place justice. I stood here for the 2014 Thanksgiving weekend for under $ 100 a night which was what brought me here in the first place. Also Red Roof only charges $ 16 a day for parking versus the surrounding spots which was $ 20 and up.
The room was clean and the floors are made of wood which is nice because you can always tell when they clean the floors.
I will say that the water pressure is constant but you might hear the pipes rattle. If that doesn’t bother you trust me it’s not a big deal.
The front desk was always polite and helpful when I called or talked to in person.
The usual morning breakfast of toast, cereal and waffles plus various juices definitely helped from spending money on breakfast. Although I will say that the water container labeled «water» it taste more like it had heavy coffee remnants.
When my team is in town to play the Padres I’ll definitely be back.

Sorry Red Roof… you probably won’t see me again…
I had a three day convention to go to, and I did not feel like paying hotel prices even though I lived two hours away. Everyone and their mother had tried to convince me not to drive back and forth every day. Yes, I hate driving, but $ 35-​$ 40 a tank of gas as opposed to $ 90 + for one night just to sleep in a hotel was the better deal for me. I drive too much as it is, it would be just another day. Perhaps when I make more moolah I will go the hotel route, and a better one at that. The most everyone won me over with, was staying the first night because I was going to be at a team dinner and did not feel like getting home at midnight to leave again at 6:00am.
Okay, so back to the «hotel».
I went on
and found a bunch of places, but I am not that familiar with the area so it took me several days of scoping around to finally cave in to this one. I wanted to go to the Wyndham but their $ 24 parking turned me away. I should have looked farther out from the convention, but I didn’t really know what I was doing and was just frustrated with the whole thing as it was. This place seemed to have decent reviews on their recent ones, and it did not look too scary.
My drive from the convention took forever and seemed much farther than the one mile or a little more that it claimed. Thanks San Diego with your million one way streets and my crappy GPS that had me all over. Oh and the trains… I got stuck staring at one for a good five minutes or more. I was tired and cranky at this point. Not to mention that while the dinner was a great gesture on our team, I probably should have just went home because there were so many people and I couldn’t move. No one would have noticed.
So I pull in, park, and notice that it says permit required. Me being lost, confused, and lame, left. Did my one way turn dance or circle or whatever you want to call it, to locate their underground parking. Well, that was locked up. Now I am more annoyed. I called. They said they supply the permit once I check in. I guess I should have walked out and asked the first time I parked. More one way street dances and circles and I pull in and barely snag the last parking space.
Checking in was easy. Thank you. Oh wait… surprise! $ 16 parking. Well I guess I should have went to the other hotel after all. Apparently this city is obsessed with steep parking fees. I guess the expensive nights stay is not enough. I get in my room and its tiny as I read and expected. That was fine, I was only sleeping for a few hours and then getting a shower. The room was very clean. Thank you. (A saving grace for another star). No bugs like I had feared. The shower head was extremely low like I had read, but since I am a shrimp it did not affect me. They also gave me their wifi info right away so that was nice, since that was rare.
Here is where it went to crap. I wanted to avoid feeling like I was at a motel since I was alone and not familiar with things. It looks like a motel from the outside. Oh and it gets better. Drunks right outside my room. I don’t do well with loud drunks, especially ones gossiping, yelling, cussing every other word, etc, for hours! Yeah I cuss, but every other word loudly and drunk at 10:30pm is going to get on my nerves. I heard them for a good two hours. So much for sleep. The window and bed is about a foot away from the door, and the walls must be made out of paper mache because you can hear EVERYTHING. Once they stopped, and stopped their loud music, and their constant slamming of doors, some left. Then you hear every car alarm, every car door slam, every room door slam, and I have no idea what the other room was doing that I heard every sound. I was woken up every few hours by someone walking around upstairs, including 4am.
Oh yeah, not to mention when I plopped down on the bed, it was stiff, and creaked. So much for being comfortable.
Check out was easy too. So checking in and out was simple. Room was clean. That was about all I had. They serve breakfast from 6:30am-9:30am. I didn’t bother checking.
Definitely not worth $ 90 and $ 16 parking for all of these disasters. What a waste of money I did not have.

Decent. Stayed here for Comic-​Con weekend. It’s a 15 min walk to the convention give or take depending on the crowd and lights. Walkable to everywhere in the gaslamp like going out areas like restaurants, night clubs, and Horton Plaza mall.
Yes it’s a run down older smaller inn, but the front desk people were nice and the floors were wood like laminate flooring, which I prefer than stinky old carpet. Stuff was clean. Bathroom in room 101 is narrow but clean. TV was old but had cable channels. AC worked. No trouble to reset your room card key if needed. Vending machines available. Charge to park but we didn’t have a car. They call a taxi if you need one. They had a glitch in the computer and thought we were staying one night but they fixed it no problem. Free toiletry samples at the front desk.
