Ive gone to this place many times with great experience and thats why Im being nice by granting 2 stars. Ordered the Rick James, again, and it was super thin totally over cooked and dry. In fact the crust on the outter edges was black. Completely disappointing. I guess you should examine your pizza before you walk out the door. Very doubtful that we will go back. Like I said completely disappointing. Boo Pizza Freaks! Boo.

If you are looking for a dominos experience this may not be the place for you. If on the other hand you are looking for unique pizzas/sandwiches/salads and great food you have to check this place out. Yes as you will read from some of the negative comments this is a one man shop, so be patient and understanding if he is slammed. We want him busy so this place can stay open for a long time!!! I LOVETHEMAC N’ CHEESEANDTHAIPIZZAS!!! David

If you have something special in mind for your pizza, order it here. Sadot is a chef with intent. Sure he has a menu from which you can order all kinds of unique pizza combinations, but what he really wants to make is dinner. Plain and simple, this guy is here to cook up something you love. I was really impressed by his«slow food» approach. He said, «I want to make something so real, it’s wholesome». Sadot cooks for the people. A real treat. Tip: Best not to arrive in a rush.

The Lady Gaga of pizza spots! Hate it or love it, it’s tough to keep a p-p-poker face with all of the crazy toppings they have here. Whether you feel like mashed potatoes and broccoli or cranberries and roast beef as toppings one thing is for sure, these freaks are probably the furthest thing from ordinary you could ask for in a pizza spot. Staff is extremely friendly and the price is cheaper than one would expect for such elaborate flavor combinations. If you you’re up for a new twist on your next pie this is definitely the place to hit up.

Great selection of veggies and a vegan cheese… creative menu… I ordered make your-own vegan cheese pizza that had refried beans, red cabbage, olives, carrots, artichoke, sun driet tomato and pesto… it was colorful to look at and very tasty… The owners were also baby friendly.

This review is late, but better late than never. I bought a BuyWithMe voucher back in October for Pizza Freeks, $ 30 for something like $ 15. Good deal. I’m a «pizza freak» myself and I love to bake pies at home, experimenting with different techniques and ingredients. So, when I saw the diversity of there menu, I knew things were going to get interesting… My boyfriend and I went in on a Saturday night around 8pm. Bankers Hill was unexpectedly quite that night, and when we pulled up to the restaurant we actually thought that it may be closed. When we walked in there were three men hanging out, one being the owner. They were very nice and talkative. The place is small, has maybe three tables inside, and a couple on the side walk. I can imagine that it could get crowded with more people. We ordered a pizza and hung out while the owner prepped and cooked it. I can’t remember exactly which pizza it was, maybe like an «everything» meat pizza. It was good. I enjoyed it. I thought the pizza tasted great and the ingredients were fresh and flavorful. We ended up not even using the voucher because we didn’t even order enough to justify it. We will definitely be going back to use it though.

Pizza Freeks reminded me of a bad college frat party — all we wanted was pizza and beer, yet we ended up having an awkward experience with a bunch of randoms where there was a ton of yelling and something caught on fire. We should have bailed after the initial phone call, during which the confused gentleman answering the phone hung up on us mid-order. We called him back and requested the Mac & Cheese pizza, which sounded promising, and a salad to cut the guilt. The time estimate was 30 minutes, but at 6:45 pm on a Saturday, we erred on the side of caution and showed up 45 minutes later… only to find that the lone employee hadn’t even started our pizza and was on the verge of a breakdown. He kept yelling to the 5 – 6 people in the restaurant that they were«unexpectedly slammed» and that everything was backed up. However, the menu looked decent, so we decided to wait for our order and check the place out instead of canceling. The décor was Half-Baked chic in that the restaurant was the size of a dorm room and looked about as clean. There was a TV in the corner, nothing looked particularly sanitary(employee making pizzas went from handling money to handling ingredients without washing his hands) and there was incense burning in a corner.(No comment.) As we were waiting, the panicky employee got into a dispute with a patron about how Groupon applied to her bill, which led to a full-on yelling match between the two of them. At first it was awkward, but after 20 minutes of the two of them getting in each other’s faces and drowning out all other conversations, it began to get entertaining. The spat must have caused Panicky Employee to forget about the actual pizza, because suddenly the restaurant filled up with smoke and he had to start opening windows to keep everyone from choking. Twenty minutes AFTER that our pizza was finally ready. After an hour and a forty minutes of waiting, we canceled our salad order, took our pizza, and fled. I would have forgiven all of the above had the pizza been fantastic, but it was just okay. First of all, it didn’t have some of the ingredients that it advertised, such as peas and onions. Second, the Mac & Cheese was just mac… it seemed like plain pasta on pizza. The bacon was a tasty addition, but after eating a few slices we decided to throw the rest away instead of saving it. I had high hopes for this place because it’s small, locally owned, has a great concept and fun location. I hope it was just an «off» day and not the usual. Regardless, we’ll be going to URBN or Pizzacato for our pizza fixes from now on.

We live in the Land Of Lefty’s on the east side of Balboa Park but decided to expand our pizza horizons with a trip to Pizza Freeks over in Banker’s Hill. Turns out it is a little informal hole in the wall where really freekin good artisanal pies emerge from super fresh ingredients. The artist in residence was Sadat, who was running the whole show virtually alone, running banter with customers, making meticulous pies one at a time. Although this place does mostly takeout, we decided to eat there at one of three small tables, which gave us a great view of the kitchen. Sadat makes all his own stuff — the dough, the sauce, the pesto in tupperware — and we saw him chop up fresh veggies on the spot to put on our pie. Out of the cooler came a huge bag of lovely baby spinach. Then he sliced big chunks of fresh mushrooms(hold the phone! are those shiitakes? no freekin way!). Same with multicolored peppers, clumps of basil, and beautiful sun-dried tomatoes that could have been straight from the farmer’s market, no oil. He cooks the basic pie with sauce and not too much cheese half-way first, then adds toppings that really end up on top, but do not get overbaked. Our 16-inch pizza was incredibly delicious and aesthetically beautiful. I read another review that thought the place skimped on toppings, and it’s true that there were not loads of each topping, but once you put six of them together, there is plenty of interest on every slice. The crust was super thin(and hence prone to get crispy in spots but not crackery), and we surprised ourselves with how much pizza we could put down when it’s not mostly bread. We also ordered a salad: same deal, constructed from scratch on the spot, with a huge mass of fresh spinach, big slices of roasted chicken breast, a bunch of other toppings that would have been very easy to customize as he was making it, and a nice vinaigrette. Sadat seems perfectly happy to wing it instead of sticking to exactly what’s on the menu(or, we noticed, exactly what some others ordered). Fair warning to those who don’t feel relaxed or flexible. The pizza set us back $ 18.50, and the salad $ 6.50. Given the ingredient list, including — yes, real fresh shiitakes — I’m not sure how he breaks even. But here’s hoping he does, because next time we’re coming back to try broccoli and goat cheese. Hm, or mashed potatoes. Refried beans? maybe! Given the way he makes the pies with just a light sprinkling of cheese underneath, I’m eager to try some that have dollops of pesto, ricotta, goat cheese, or feta on top. These are not your mass produced goods on a predictable timetable, and so if you are on a tight schedule or hungry right this minute, Pizza Freeks may not be your best option. This place ain’t your daddy’s Domino’s. I can see how things could go wrong at some moments if too many orders came in at once. I think I’ll plan to always choose to pick up or dine in, in order to benefit from the loose vibe of the shop and say hi to Sadat as he works the magic.

Cool little place just around the corner from where I live. Every time I’m in there Zadat is experimenting with some new pizza topping. Always hot, fresh and tasty… and conveniently close. They usually have about 3 different pizzas to chose from. You can order a whole pizza or just by the slice. They recently added BBQ take out to the menu that I have been meaning to try. Smells damn good.

Pizza Freeks is an accurate name because this definitely ain’t your grandpapy’s pizza place. They make niche pizzas… and by niche I mean toppings that I would only crave if I were stoned or pregnant. That being said, it’s worth a visit. The pizza isn’t terrible and they do serve pizzas topped with more traditional ingredients as well. In summary, I guess it’s one of those different strokes for different folks places and I’m just old-fashioned when it comes to pizza ingredients.

With The electricity gone last night, and a couple of friends over, we were all STARVING and terrified to open the fridge incase it made the food spoil. They turned to me for advice, and I recommended the tastiest food that could come to mind: PIZZAFREEKS I really gotta say, I hadnt been there for nearly 3 months because of a long vacation over-seas and i had NO idea if they would be open because of the black out. but me and my friends decided to try anyway since I knew if they were open, it would be worth it. We roll up and the place was a block party. someone’s car was playing AM radio to keep us informed on the latest news about the blackout as maybe 10 or 15 were outside enjoying their food or waiting for it to come out. The darkness outside and the lack of electricity did not stop them. They worked by dim candlelight to make sure every customer was satisfied. I had the Freek Supreme and it was AMAZING. Props to the owner for staying open and serving everyone. even with no electricity the pizza was delicious. I’m now a firm believer that this place can make the MOSTPHENOMENALPIZZAINSANDIEGO with their eyes closed.

Daring concoctions, reminiscent of a stoner’s recipe. Like someone got stoned and decided these ingredients would taste good on pizza… and it actually does. Be adventurous and try it! I was a little intimidated at first of the«freeks» who run the joint, but they are friendly and welcoming and my boyfriend loves this place! lol

Eh. Not spectacular. Took about 15 more minutes more than the original time I was quoted. The broccoli on my pizza was about 90% stems rather than florets, which was odd. Overall, it was edible but I don’t think I’d return. The weird ass dude working there also made some snarky comment about«killing trees» when I said I wanted my credit card slip… wtf? I see enough cc fraud in my work to warrant always getting a receipt, lay off…

I decided to watch the Laker game over at my brothers near downtown and have a couple beers and pizza with him, so to find a pizza place I came on here to see what was close by his place and what Unilocalers thought was the best. Unilocal lead me to seek Pizza Freeks. So I read some reviews and then check out their website to see their menu. After looking over the menu items I decided to just make one of my own from their 16″ with up to 6 toppings for $ 14.95. So I go with Chicken, Pesto, Basil, Tomatoes, Mozzarella, and Ricotta cheese. Tried to do it through their online ordering system but something went wrong so I just called them up to place my order instead. Friendly girl over the phone says great choice and tells me it’ll be about 20 – 25 minutes for my order. I go to pick up the pizza and I almost drive past it. The sign on the outside is kinda small and above the door. I go in and the girl tells me it’ll be a few more minutes for my order to come out, so I sit for a minute then decide to take a few pictures of the place and then my pizza comes out and it smells good. So I take a picture of the pizza before she closes the box up. The inside of the place has a hipster type of vibe to it and has about 4 – 5 tables for patrons to sit and dine. I was the only one in there so it didn’t feel that cramped. Once I get to my brother’s place we open up a couple beers and start chowing down on the pizza and boy was it good. Haven’t had ricotta cheese in awhile and it was a great topping to have on the pizza. Chicken wasn’t too dry and the pizza didn’t taste greasy so I didn’t feel gross after finishing a couple slices. Only complaint is the crust was a little harder than I would like it, but overall a very tasty pizza combination. If I’m ever in the area again this pizza joint is the place I would go. Overall: –Pros: 6 toppings is filling and gives a lot of variety, good tasting pizza that doesn’t leave a greasy feeling in your mouth or stomach –Cons: Hard pizza crust

Love this place! Very convenient in the Banker’s Hill area, amazing pizza, and the atmosphere/vibe is excellent. Great customer service from the owners. But the reason they get 5 stars is because their VEGAN options are perfect. I can custom make my pizza how I want and they are willing to cater to me! Great job Pizza Freaks — can’t wait to come in again!

My family and I recently went on a mini vacation to San Diego and spent some time at the zoo. We where looking for a good place to eat after a long day and looked for something on Unilocal. That’s when we found out about Pizza Freeks. We loved the food and the atmosphere. The had tossed thin crust was awesome and so are the, not so generic, toppings. I loved the specialty pizzas the best. I think The Rick James and the Mac and Cheese where my favorites. I also have tried the Mashed Potato pizza but I think it needs a gravy or bbq sauce. Mashed potatoes can get a little dry, especially when they are twice cooked. It was a little hard to find the first time, so make sure you drive slow look for a black door with a yellow Pizza Freeks sign.

Eating at Pizza Freeks is like eating at your friend’s house. The owners are super chill – chick with a faux-hawk, dude who wears tight purple jeans – how could you go wrong? Their menu is extensively weird, in a good way, but they’ll make you anything you want. The joint is tucked neatly into the residential neighborhood of Banker’s Hill, but it is worth the hunt to eat here! The walls are speckled with eccentric art and they play Dexter on a big screen TV. And the pizza, well, you think it, speak it, and they’ll FREEK it! Great dough, great sauce, great toppings. The only reason I gave this place 4 stars, not 5, is because sometimes the pizza looks likes it’s been sitting out for a while. However, if more people start going here, the pizza will fly off the trays and eaters can enjoy fresh-from-the-oven freaky pizzas!

Lately i’ve been on a pizza hunting expedition. Unilocalers led me to this place. Its a small place located on the side of the hill. I didn’t even see the sign till after i left. What first caught my eye was a sign saying NY style pizza over the door. When they say hole in the wall. This place is literally a hole in the wall. Nothing outside just a door and a window in the side of the wall. Inside its small with i think 2 tables, a counter for the register and coffee bar and a small pizza kitchen. The pies are displayed and numbered with a description on a dry erase board. Im sure they change daily. I had a pepperoni, canadian bacon, and sausage slice and a artichoke, olive and tomato slice. 2 slices and a can of soda for $ 6. Its a thin NY style crust but with a bit more texture and substance to it. More dense maybe is the word. I really like the sauce at this place. its flavorful but doesn’t overpower the whole thing. I wish there were some slices of white pies that day. guess ill have to come back to try those. Tips: It’s Cash only(no plastic) *see my list of pizza joints*

This restaurant, formerly known as «Café Mundo,» was closed for several months for renovations. When the chrysalis finally opened, a great New York style pizza place emerged. They still offer a full coffee menu but the focus is on the pizzas. For lunch try the combo: 2 giant slices and a drink for $ 6. Hours are Sunday — Thursday 8 am — 9 pm and Friday and Saturday 8 am — 10:30 pm.
