I was always used to eating street tacos in LA but I must say that Oscars blew my mind! Yes, it’s a little pricey for a taco but oscars backs it up with its great quality! I would recommend surf and turf tacos if you stop by oscars~~

They changed their bread for the fisherman’s torta so it didn’t taste as good as it used to. The bread is soggy and soft. The ceviche is okay. I usually get the shrimp or mixed ceviche. It is a hit or miss because sometimes it is super salty. I will probably come back though for their sauce as it masks the taste of the soggy bread(green, orange and red).

Love love love oscars!!! The ceviche, the surf and turf taco, the fishermans torta, the EVERYTHING is amazing. Workers are nice, place is relatively clean, food is delicious, can’t ask for anything more! Love love love all the sauces as well. They’re a must with the tacos! Parking is a little tight, and can get crowded at times though!

Came here on a Friday due to a great recommendation from my sister(I kinda always believe her). We ordered, 4 fish tacos @ 1.99 each, a surf and turf taco and a fish ceviche that came with 2 tostadas. I wasn’t sure if I was going to like it so the guy gave me a sample. Omg, it was so yummy! On top of that, the sample was half a cup, so generous! The fish tacos were amazing! Everything was amazing even the customer sevice! He even offered me more tostadas for my fish ceviche. I’ll probably try the tuna ceviche next time. Yes, that means i’ll be coming back!!!

I was in San Diego over the weekend and heard that if there is one place I can’t leave without trying, it is Oscars. I came here twice and was very impressed with the food. Their fish tacos are incredible. I ordered the standard fried fish taco(about $ 2) and the taco especial, which has smoked fish, shrimp, and choice of scallops and octopus($ 4.95). The taco especial blew me away. The fish was so fresh, flavorful, tender, and juicy, and had a wonderful smoky flavor. They also have a variety of sauces in the fridge that you can add on top of your tacos. Food is 5 stars. I took off one star for the ambiance, which is more of a grab and go takeout counter(at least at the location I was at) than a sit down place.

When we travel to San Diego, we like staying in Hillcrest because of the proximity to many good restaurants and shops. On our most recent trip, we discovered Oscar’s. What a little gem of a place! Ceviche, tacos and the torta we had were excellent. Looking forward to coming here again the next time around and sampling more of their menu.

Awesome tacos and ceviche. Came here because Unilocal lead us. Ceviche($ 4.80 — Mixed) Too much for one person. Not as in too much food, but just too lime-y for one person. I think it’s awesome. The fish is fresh, and it tastes great with chips; it just needs another person to share with. Fish Taco($ 4.60) Money! This is so good. I wish I would’ve just got another fish taco instead of going with the Surf n Turf(see below). Surf and Turf Taco Good, but I remember it being almost, if not, twice the price of the fish taco. Not that good, I guess.

First of all, you need to stop reading reviews and go get these tacos immediately. But if you still feel compelled to read this review in order to convince yourself that getting the best fish tacos ever is worth it then by all means… I love Mexican food, I love tacos, I love sea food. Never have I experienced a better combination of these three things than at Oscars. Try each taco and load up on their various sauces. And enjoy. The tacos are your average size but piled on top is whatever meat you want with shredded lettuce and you can add sauce and citrus as you please. The ingredients are fresh and flavor bursts. The fish and meat is seasoned and cooked to perfection. The taco shell is a soft and hard tortilla that keeps all the food in and pairs very well with the rest of the taco. These are the best fish tacos I’ve ever had.

Bomb tacos I got Chorizo and shrimp tacos — so good, simple. Chorizo done right with sautéed shrimp. With avocado and some cabbage. Simply delicious. Oscar Seafood Special — scallops, octopus, fried fish and pico. Just like LA’s Mexican spots. The ceviche was so good, taste just like how you would make it and let it sit so the lime juice can cook it. The sauces were alll fire! Chipotle mayo, red chili(fav), and habanero aioli. Perfect compliments to the already amazing tacos. First food adventure find on my bomb trip to San Diego with my bestest friend in the whole world.

the bar was set high for oscars after one of my friends told me i HAD to try it saying that this place had THE best fish tacos he has ever had. so after hearing my friend rave about this place, my husband and i decided to come to oscars for our first meal in sd… and all subsequent tacos we tried paled in comparison to oscars. we ordered the surf n’ turf taco, taco especial, battered fish taco, and the torta de oscar. all delicious and very generous portions. the ‘special’ tacos are worth trying but i think next time i would be fully satisfied just getting two of the regular battered fish tacos. i highly recommend trying the torta de oscar — it is amazinggggg. not like any other tortas ive had! and make sure to get the special sauces they have in the refrigerator near the counter(all self-serve). this location has a decent seating area if you are coming with a group. definitely try oscar’s.

My sister, husband and I went for dinner a few days ago. The place was quite busy considering that it was a Monday. The set-up is walk up and order, and wait for your number to be called. There are a couple of tables inside and some high-top/bar seating right by the door, plus some seating outside. We ordered 7 tacos among the 3 of us. There was a large party that was still getting their order, so needless to say we waited quite a while for our food. While waiting for our food, we got cups of complimentary seafood broth, which was nice and not too salty. Good for that cold, rainy evening. When our food was finally ready, we were missing one taco. My husband went up to the register to explain that our order was missing an item, and the cashier said he would have the kitchen make another taco. Except the cashier forgot to tell the kitchen. So, we never got that last taco and just ended up asking for a refund. The cashier realized his mistake and offered us ceviche, but my husband declined because we were done eating at that point. As for the tacos themselves, I left disappointed. And with a mild case of food poisoning. The only thing I could taste on the battered fish tacos were the pungent red onion, and the adobada fish taco didn’t live up to its name of flavorful, juicy grilled piece of fish. The next morning, my sister and I woke up nauseated and with stomach aches. So, needless to say, I don’t think I’ll be going to Oscar’s again anytime soon. I’d recommend driving a little farther south where you’ll find much better, fresher(and cheaper) fish tacos at TJ Oyster Bar. A plus though is that they have a small parking lot, which is a luxury in Hillcrest. They do take credit cards, but there is a 30-cent charge for transactions under $ 10.

Parking sucks so bad here. I drove around for a good 15 minutes before finally just parking across the street by Whole Foods. When I finally arrived, I ordered the Surf & turf taco and shrimp ceviche. The surf & turf taco was amazing. The tortilla had cheese melted on it. It was priced at about $ 4.50 but well worth the price since it had a good portion of steak and shrimp. The Shrimp ceviche too citrus-y for my taste buds. Don’t get me wrong, it was tasty and all but I wish the flavors were balanced out more and wish they put a little more avocado pieces. I got one tiny piece in my ceviche. They provide spicy, chipotle and habanero. The habanero was the best tasting one to me and it helped balance out the citrus flavor of the ceviche. Not sure if I would return only because I was totally turned off with the parking situation but the free sample of the fish stew totally made up for that.

Solid fish and seafood tacos. When Chula Vista is too far and Rubio’s isn’t cutting it for me, I come here instead. Service is always friendly and usually they offer free samples of their fish soup(which is pretty good! It reminds me of Filipino Sinigang without the yucky anchovy/fish sauce smell). I have tried the octopus taco, fried fish taco, smoked fish taco, and shrimp taco. Each of them were pretty above average, and I love how they’re super generous with the avocado toppings. I’ve also had the smoked fish burrito, which was great but I thought a little too much for me(not that it tastes bad or anything). I recommend the regular tacos with the chipotle sauce in their fridge. Green sauce is good, too! Plus they have batch craft soda, which goes well with your food! Place is kinda pricey for what you get and the parking lot is small. I’ve only come here during off hours; what I like about this place is that they’re open from 8am to the late evening so you can come in whenever it is convenient for you. Come here if you like Mexican seafood! :)

Pretty good… In my journey to find the best fish tacos in San Diego, I’ve finally made it to Oscars in hillcrest from numerous recommendations. But with high expectations, I was slightly disappointed… like a good movie with too many«amazing» recommendations. I ordered battered fish tacos during happy hour(2:30pm-5:30pm), and mixed seafood ceviche while my friend ordered steak tacos. The fish tacos had ONE crunchy strip of fish, which was fresh. Then filled with finely diced lettuce(good for texture), chopped tomatoes, onions, cilantro, on a dry, chewy corn tortilla. Flavor was lacking and the crunch subsided, BUT they have so many nice spicy sauces, including Sriracha, on the table and 3 creamy ones in the fridge(chipotle, red sauce, habanero). So play dress up at your hearts desire. Overall, it was pretty good… I mean it’s 99cents yal! But nothing unique about flavor, almost lacking, and not enough oomph from the inside. I’m spoiled by the other amazing, stuffed tacos I’ve had at taco trucks and other prestigious taco shops. FYI only the battered fish is on sale during happy hour. The ceviche was yummy… Plenty of lime. And they give you 2 crunchy tortillas. Great to share. My friend had the steak taco which was reportedly decent but had better with more flavor and didn’t care for the drier corn tortilla. Fun was had with all the spicy sauce options though. Service was whatever. No line at 5pm on a Monday. Parking was easy in the small parking lot. I’ll be back for more decent cheap tacos… Plus it’s so close to me!

I’ve had Oscars before at the original location and instantly fell in love. Everything on the menu is amazing. I was a little hesitant to try this new location because rarely are branches as good as the original. Fortunately this place is closer to where I live and just as good as the original. This location also has more seating than than the original. I had two battered fish tacos and a taco especial. The tacos are filling and well worth the price. Usually with non seafood tacos I value the taco depending on the quantity of the protein, but with fish tacos the slaw and toppings help make the taco IMO. They give plenty of toppings and the protein is substantial as well. The especial is about $ 5 which at first glance seems steep for a single taco, but oh boy is it worth it. 3+ proteins(fish, shrimp, scallops) with avocado and toppings… Somehow the taco holds itself together and is just the best. The employee also gave us a free sample of the fish stew. I thought it would be some leftover nonsense but it was surprisingly delicious and I would probably return just to order the stew on a cold day. If you love fish tacos, this is wassup.

That shrimp ceviche though… This place ticks all the boxes– it’s affordable, delicious, and fast. They don’t have a huge menu, but what they do make is well done and worth going back multiple times for. The shrimp ceviche and fish ceviche are both great, the surf and turf tacos are perfectly balanced and flavorful, and they even have hand-crafted soda, which is kind of fun! My husband and I love this place so much that, «Let’s go out for ceviche!» has officially replaced«Let’s go out for ice cream!». Keep it up Oscar’s!

Unilocal: What keeps you coming back? Me: Surf and turf tacos dressed up with that spicy green sauce. Kinda pricey, but kinda delicious. I can occasionally go for a chorizo breakfast burrito — but 99% of the time it’s the surf and turf without hesitation! And I can always take time to appreciate a private parking lot.

My cousins and I stopped by Oscar’s after an event in SD and had ourselves a very delicious and filling dinner. The menu is simple but filled with a variety of food so there is something here for almost everyone. I opted to share my meal that I would be able to try more food without having to eat too much. We ordered the shrimp ceviche, taco especial(with scallops) and a grilled octopus salad. The shrimp ceviche was fresh and had the perfect balance of acidity. The taco especial was unlike any taco I’ve ever eaten — it had a great mix of seafood and it was HUGE. The grilled octopus salad was my favorite — the octopus was grilled perfectly, flavorful, was not at all chewy and came with almost a whole avocado. The food here is great but what is even better is their sauces!!! The avocado and chipotle sauces were so addicting; if I were them I would bottle it and sell it. Very good spot to stop for Mexican food if you are in SD.

The best tacos I have ever has in my life. They started taking credit cards and the key to the bathroom is hanging on the wall.
