Little Free Library is a radical idea. It is part of a movement started by Todd Bol & Rich Brooks of Wisconsin that has grown to include Little Libraries all over the United States and in several other countries. So I was happy to see that Point Loma now has it’s own wooden bench and colorfully-painted box of books. When I was there, it was mainly children’s books, but then again, this location is just one house away from Loma Portal Elementary School. The home owner who installed this library against the retaining wall of her home has said that«It’s been a real blessing for our street and our neighborhood.» I would agree that ANYTHING that promotes reading and the enjoyment of books, in particular to young ones, is a great & wonderful idea. This Little Free Library has been around for about six months. You can build your own library, once you have identified a legal and safe place to locate it. Free Libraries should be highly visible – hence the colorful book boxes & then installed in high foot traffic areas. Otherwise, find someone to build one for you, purchase one through the Little Free Library online catalog, or apply to receive a sponsored Gift Fund Little Library. A steward is needed for these unique creations in order to tend to the bench and box of books. This person or persons checks the library on a regular basis to make sure it is stocked, clean, and looking good. Also, Little Free Libraries can be registered on a world map, so that anyone anywhere in the world can easily find the Little Library. 5 UnilocalSTARS to this most welcome addition to the Point Loma community.
