I undergo a bit of childlike giddiness whenever I see this bridge. «We’re going to Balboa Park! WOOOOOOOOOOOOO!» After crossing it, you immediately encounter the beautiful Museum of Man on the left. I don’t know what else I could say that wouldn’t make me sound like Buzz Killington going, «Nooow, who here likes a good story about a bridge?»

My accountant lives moments away from this bridge and most of the time, after Ive seen her, I want to come here and jump off.

This bridge has been a gateway of sorts for me for ages. My earliest experiences with it were from when I would go to the Zoo with my parents when I was a little kid. It seemed so beautiful and HUGE from down on 163. At the time it was completely covered in Ivy as well, and some of the Ivy would hang down between the arches and it was just amazing. More recently I enjoy it as one of the running links between the central mesa of Balboa Park and the west side of the park. The bridge’s insides burned a couple of years ago, the framework inside was wood and an arsonist got in there and lit it on fire … but the bridge remained structurally strong and reopened almost immediately. A tribute to craftsmanship and design. I love this bridge.
