The House of England in Balboa Park is a small but cool cottage that celebrates all things British. They’re open to the public on Sundays, and visitors can sample authentic English tea along with tasty bites. The inside is filled with authentic English icons, and there are many pictures hanging on the wall that feature prominent rulers from Queen Victoria to Queen Elizabeth. Several volunteers that work there are from Great Britain, and their charming attitudes and cockney accents add to the authenticity! I’ve been to two annual House of England celebrations that spill out into the small courtyard outside the cottage. They feature authentic British cuisine as well as lots of entertainment! In addition to our Penny Farthing group, there are costumers walking about who dress in garb ranging from Harry Potter to Dracula to Mary Poppins. There’s even a cardboard Dalek available for pictures, because what British celebration would be complete with a homage to Dr. Who?

This place is so cute and cottage like, but what a find. They really are interested in all things ‘England’, some of them are actually English too! They have hot ‘proper’ tea, and sandwiches, and other English tasty treats on offer too. Anglophile heven.

Sundays from noon to 4pm, the International village of Balboa Park opens up to visitors. Take a stroll, enter one or all of the cottages which interest you. We felt very welcomed by the folks at House of England. They welcomed us in and offered us tea, jam tartlets and other biscuits. The House of England had memorabilia of the royal family, letters, photos, commemorative plates and much more. If you’re an Anglophile, this is a nice stop.
