I love watching Amazing Race. When I heard High Trek was coming to town, I thought this was my chance to see what it was like for an afternoon. We had a blast! I recommend that you try it once if you’re a big fan of TAR. We went to downtown, Balboa Park, and Hillcrest. I’m not sure I’d do it again because I didn’t really learn new neighborhoods, but I did learn the terrain of Balboa Park and did discover that, yes, you can walk to Hillcrest from Downtown when the pressure is on. My boyfriend, who does not watch Amazing Race, had a good time, and got really into it. He was into the strategy, impatient with me when I didn’t get the clues, but was good-natured when I shushed him as teams went by so they wouldn’t steal our secrets. So bring your game on – it was fun to see the other teams, their costumes and the good-natured competitiveness. You will definitely need a PDA(Blackberry/iPhone) for this. Maps are a huge plus, because Google Maps doesn’t cut it when you’re trying to plot lots of different locations fast. A good strategy for us was to map things ahead of time. We finished in the top 25%, and probably would have been top 10 except there was one location we didn’t map ahead of time, and that cost us 20 minutes. Oh, and bonus, I got a pin that said«Kiss me, I’m a Unilocaler» at the end of the race! I snagged a couple of those.
