Elite Event: It’s Game Time At Bub’s At The Ballpark

I really enjoyed this event because as a newbie to San Diego and not knowing many people, I came alone. People I talked to were friendly and I stayed longer than I usually would. They were serving great drinks and although I passed on the food since it was all fried (it IS a sports bar after all), it looked like good quality food and others were enjoying it. I’d come back anytime I go to a game or just want to kick back and hang out downtown after work.
Thank you Bub’s and thank you Unilocal CM Brad for pulling this together!

Came with my plus one and we sat at the bar. During our first round, we bought a few mules. I got the spicy mule and I forgot what she ordered but the 2 mules were $ 20.
The food they were serving that night were corn dogs, sweet potato tots, fried pickles, regular tots and onion rings. They were also serving chicken strips but I didn’t have the opportunity to try those because I inhaled my plate and was too stuffed to get some. I enjoyed the sweet potato tots and corn dogs the most. I think I gained 5 lbs and had a mini heart attack that night with all the fried goodies.
Our second round of mules were the free ones that they were serving. It was light and refreshing and had a good kick to it.
Though there were many games to be played, we came to grub and enjoy other elites’ company. It always a pleasure to run into Jack, Maria, Nette, Brad and Andy. Thanks for the good time Brad and Bub’s! Definitely a spot to come and chill before a Padres game!

What I really enjoyed were the mules! And I think the magical touch was in the beautiful bartenders as they said they were made with lots of love. Heck I was double fisting at some point! They were that good.
This was not my fist time at Bub’s so I knew I was in for a great time.

I had never been to Bub’s at the Ballpark, so was looking forward to this Unilocal Elite Event with great enthusiasm. The line started forming early, as it does for all of Brad B’s amazing events, and we quickly found a parking spot and hustled over to our place in line. Once in the door, we were able to make custom name-​tags with flash and bling, then slide them into our brand-​new Unilocal lanyards. The old stick on-​name tags will never be the same!
Bub’s was a wonderful venue — larger than it appears from the outside, and full of things to do. The entire staff was hustling and they really put on a five-​star event. A lot of us dressed up in sports regalia, so it was fun to see the fan diversity amongst the Unilocal Elites.
The food was a fried fanatic’s dream come true, with two kinds of tater tots, corn dogs, onion rings, french fries, chicken strips, fried pickles, and fried jalapeños. My mouth waters just thinking about it!
Brad and Estefany, once again, really set the bar high. Everyone seem to be having a great time, and I can’t wait for the next event!

YAY Brad and Estafany! Another Elite event that you both hit out of the Ballpark! (See what I did there?)
It was a +1 event so I decided to bring my baby sister. (Don’t worry, she is over 21!). We waied in line and I got my backstage Elite pass that I could decorate with scented markers and add flair by way of those super cute pins.
Then we headed over to the bar to sample those tasty Moscow Mules (vodka, ginger beer) and the Ballast Point Longfin Lager. Both homeruns! (See what I did?)
We got in line with the other Elites and their plus ones with tasty drinks in hand. We loaded up on all the bar food, tots of the sweet and savory variety and mini corn dogs. My favorite was the fried pickles dipped in the chipotle aioli.
We found a cozy spot on the outside patio under the heater and observed the world near the Ballpark. It’s happening, let me tell ya!

Thank you Brad for a very fun event! I had not been to Bub’s and the staff was great! I really liked the Mules! The food was tasty even though it was all fried! But I love me some mini corn dogs and onion rings!!! I didn’t play any of the games but I loved the huge connect four that was sitting on our table!
Hung out with the usual suspects… Melanio, Maria C, Nette, Rianne, Joanne and Glenn, Shalini… always good to see Yvonne C, Doris and David, Soo, Andy, Conrad, Angelo, and Ace… ran into an old college friend, Rudy and his girlfriend Leslie. Great seeing David G. too!

Although the hoops did look like fun but I’m not a «playah!» LOL! Met Herb and his roommate Mike while waiting in line, which moved rather quickly!

Deep fried, you say? Yes, please pass this way.
I ate it all and loved the fried pickles and fried jalapenos best! I started off with a Mule — tart, strong — but switched to beer — basic, perfect to quench my thirst following my deep fried feeding frenzy.
As I glanced around the room, I thought the crowd was the perfect size. Any bigger and we’d be spilling out the seams, but it was a perfect Thursday night for our rowdy crowd to be at Bub’s. Our server somehow always had an extra beer she wanted to set on our table. How did she know to choose us?!
Hats off once again to the planning and organization and hand shaking from our fearless leader, Brad. I don’t know how you manage to corral us, but somehow you always do. Hope you enjoyed some extra pickles, you deserve it!
TVs everywhere got me excited for the upcoming March Madness action. With baseball season around the corner, I’ll be seeing you, Bub’s, again real soon!

In reading the «first to review“‘s entry into tonight’s event, I noticed he left several things out… for example:
THE FOOD — while just about everything was fried, the mini corn dogs, onion rings, sweet potato tots, regular tots, and fried jalapenos were definitely delicious. I want to go back to Bub’s for their gourmet versions! (Earlier in the evening, I spoke with someone’s +1, who was from Venezuela and had NEVER tried tater tots… hope he liked them!)
Also, as my friend Judy S. and her +1 Jen wanted something relatively healthy, they ordered some of the wings; I was full from the finger foods, but the wings looked really good.
THE DRINKS — I had 2 two of the Bub’s Mules, which were really good and not too strong. Didn’t get to try the Ballast Point Longfin Lager Drafts… and I guess neither did the «first to review», seeing how he didn’t mention either of the drinks. Maybe he’s a teetoller, I guess?
THE GAMES — Two words: Giant. Jenga. My friends Judy S., her +1 Jen, Jill E., her +1 Julius R. (whose baking skills have gained quite a following amongst Unilocalers), Arlene P., and her +1 Jason all had a blast as we kept stacking the tower higher and higher (and I think ours was one of the biggest in the place… at least until Arlene finally toppled it)! There was a giant Connect Four, foosball, an XBox 360 with Madden 25 (which no one but a couple of people were playing), various card games (I remember Arlene trying to help out the Unilocal Godfather Jack during their game of Giant War), the giant beer pong that looked like fun, and even a four-​player Pac-​Man game that Jill, Julius, Mari, and I played at the end of the night after I sprung for it (and which Julius won).
The highlight of the evening had to be the free throw competition: this was very competitive and which Jill’s friend eventually won! Props to the tournament’s MC for wearing that funky tracksuit and shades!
But I guess the «first to review» didn’t really notice the games too much — perhaps he was a fly on the wall… or maybe he got eliminated early from the tournament and had a case of sour grapes.
THE VENUE — For a local sports bar, Bub’s feels very roomy. I was surprised at how easily I was able to move around the place, despite the number of Elites, +1s, bar staff, and Unilocal staff gathered together. Seeing the older cell phones encased in the tables was also a surprise; the Blackberry was one thing, but we all had to take photos of the Motorola RAZR that we saw, as for many of us that model was our first cell phone (I still have fond memories of mine). Makes me wonder if the «first to review» noticed, or what kind of cell phone he had back in the day…
THE PEOPLE — Although it had been a couple of days since I last saw quite a few of my Unilocal Elite friends courtesy of the North County event, I still had fun catching up with people nonetheless. Everyone looked good in their sports gear, from the Aztecs, to the Padres (Brad rocked the throwback gear!), to even the Lakers (holla, Maria C.!) — however, Ace won the night with his San Diego Clippers gear! Now THAT’S old school!
Brad, Estephany, and the staff at Bub’s: THANK YOU for feeding us and hosting us! Also, props for having us make our own badges and giving us free lanyards (well, the Elites anyway, though I saw a couple of +1s had them as well)! I hope I can make it back to Bub’s over the weekend for the $ 5 San Diego CityBeat burger special… which I’m sure the «first to review» also neglected to mention (among other things). Oh well, that’s what this helpful Unilocal Elite is here for — to give a proper Unilocal review for events like these the «first to review» wishes that he could attend.

Thanks for the really good time that my friend and I had at Bub’s last night! I have passed by zillion times and never been inside. I thought it was a ‘dude’s place’ and I could observe that no, this is a cool place to have some beers and more fun!
Unfortunately I had another commitment so I could not stay there to play as much as I wanted, but it was awesome to chit chat with many old and new Unilocalers and Unilocalettes and have some Ballast beers while munching fried goodies. I am not into this type of fried appetizers (trying to watch out the line:) but the chipotle mayo was so delicious with the onions rings and I liked the friend jalapeños a lot too.
I was very surprised on how deceiving is the exterior, I was expecting a somewhat small bar and then I found it huge even though it was full to the max of people having fun and enjoying the night. The night was kind of cold but totally warm inside Bub’s!

Truly just a good time.
Had no high expectations except to enjoy myself and I did. Service was great.
Atmosphere was what we needed on a Thursday night.
To some it was their first YEE this year 2014.
But it’s always wonderful to see old and new Unilocalers in a party atmosphere.

I sensed fried food upon entering. Mmm… There is nothing like the scent of hydrogenated oil in the air. I followed the long line of Unilocalers as it snaked closer to the food trays. My eyes widened at the sight of fresh tater tots dumped in the tray straight from the fryer. :-) They were glistening of fresh oil. :-) Miracle of miracles the nice worker left me alone with the food after explaining what each tray contained. What a glorious birthday month it has been! I hurriedly began stacking my plate like I was at a Mongolian bbq joint. In my excitement a few tater tots went flying. If you were hit I’m sorry. Momentary loss of muscular coordination…
I had my first tater tot and only tater tot in the cafeteria in elementary school. It was quite disappointing as they were luke warm, spongy, and rather bland. :-P I had a good feeling about these. The scent of oil in the air was strong and I was becoming light headed. Hot crunchy tater tot crunched in my mouth and I tasted that flavor of potato that has been deep fried to perfection. Mmm… Best tater tot I have ever eaten!
The sweet potato tater tots were interesting. Not quite as crunchy and tasted much like a sweet potato fry.
Onion rings. Mmm… Delicious beer batter and onion goodness blending in my mouth. A little soggy from being in the food tray too long. *sigh
Mini corn dogs. Bite size pieces. Kinda crunchy. Taste like a corn dog. Pretty good.
As I entered a carb fueled haze I remember fun with an Etch a Sketch, some card game named War, and Jenga pieces flying through the room accompanied with screams of fun and merriment. :-) The wait staff was awesome bringing me drinks so I wouldn’t have to leave my plate of fried treasures. After that first plate I think I talked to friendly Unilocalers and Jack got me some more fried stuff. You are awesome Jack! There was a nice Unilocaler bought me a drink (you know who you are send me a friend request). :-) I can’t think of his name right now… I don’t remember much else but I know I had a great time! :-) I made it home ok and I didn’t wake up in jail. :-)

Fried food, carb and alcohol coma here I come!
What another spectacular event by the legendary, B-​Rad B and his sidekick, Estefany. Pack the house with a bunch of Unilocalers, have the food and booze flowing and now you have yourself a real party.
I missed a couple of these events recently due to school schedule constraints so it was good to be back and enjoy what I had been missing.
There were no hiccups during this event, the kitchen staff and bartenders were on their A-​Game. There wasn’t a food or booze shortage and there were tons of games to be played (which I wish I would have participated in but I was too busy hanging out with good company).
Mules & lagers were the name of the game here. They were readily available so that everybody could have the «Kennedy Treatment”(HIMYM Reference). Then you had the fried bar food, a guilty pleasure. Onion rings = good. Tator tots (Sweet Potato & regular) = good. Mini corn dogs = gooood. Everything was good and quite honestly, I hadn’t eaten much for the day and I was so starving that I easily over-​consumed. Regardless, it was a good night.
Got to see the regulars as well as catch up with some I haven’t seen for awhile. Saw some new faces too. It was definitely fun.
Gotta hand it to Brad and Estefany again as well as well as the staff at Bub’s. The event was a blast! Everybody was having fun and if I didn’t need to catch a ride back, I would have easily stayed past closing.
Another killer event in the books. It’s just too easy to get addicted to having this much fun. Until next time…

Yes, that was me in the bright yellow Lakers jersey and unfortunately they lost against OKC last night. BOO BOO! KOBE COME BACK!!!
So several of us were reminiscing on a Bub’s event a couple years back with Flip Cup. Ummmm, ya… So it was me, Conrad, Melanio and ??? that made it to the semi-​finals and lost… We were hoping to redeem ourselves — DAMMIT!!!
Oh well, there’s many games that were being played all night, but I think our group just stayed with the «drinking» and «eating» games for the most part.
Moscow Mules were aflowin’ and I kept adrinkin’! They were so delicious and before I knew it, I had about 4. The fried foods help soak in the liquor, as it should, and I was feeling GRAND!!!
I really love how Bub’s always welcomes Unilocalers with open arms. Everyone on staff was so friendly and on par with service.
Brad and Estefany did an amazing job putting game night together. Chris, you always take the best photos at these events!!! Thanks for always taking shots whenever I shout out your name.

Hey Bubs, love you! Halfway through a plate of fried pickles and sweet tater tots, I realized when I’m in a pickle, I can pull on an old SDSU sports jersey, and head over to Bubs on J street in East village, and have a couple Mules with the gang. What gang is that? The San Diego Elite squad, who always appear at the hottest spots, just when I need some cooling off!
It was Game Time At Bub’s At The Ball Park, and this was one of the most laid back and fun elite events of them all. Elites and our favorite Plus 1’s shot some hoops, and some of us even aimed at the basket! Jenga proved to be the perfect ice breaker at many tables, and I was impressed that the yummy snack buffet was available the whole night. Mini corn dogs dipped in mustard? Fried onion rings and ranch dressing? How about fried jalapeños in spicy sauce? Heck yeah! Bring it on! I’ll eat salad tomorrow, I swear!
Our CM, Brad B, introduces us to such a fantabulous variety of pleasure spots! I was surprised at how roomy Bubs is inside, and it still feels like a cozy local pub. It definitely has a sports theme, and the evening was a blast even for fickle sports fans like me who secretly don’t even have a favorite team… shhh don’t tell! I’ll root for your favorite team if you share your fried chicken strips with me! ‘Cause I didn’t get to try those.
Heard the Ballast Point Longfin Lager Drafts really hit the spot. I’ll have to return to Bub’s and give them a shot. I was overjoyed with the Bub’s Mules, which were icy cold, liquored up, and gingery luscious, so I had 2 of those!
Ladies, no wait for the powder room. Woo-​hoo for Bub’s having plenty of toilets! No kidding, that’s so rare for a bar! Thank you!

So many of my favorites in one room! So much fun. I should have partaken in the fried goodness that everyone was raving about! Mules were flowing maybe a little too freely around me. I got to sport my cool padres dress too.
The games were pretty cool. The giant beer pong set up was neat. My man friend would have made some people cry at basketball so he refrained. It was a great night all around! Got to photo bomb a few pictures, hang out with good friends and of course enjoy some drinks.

I’ve seen this place a million times. I’ve never been in until today. I’m usually at Cat Eye Club or Blind Burro across the street.
I really like this bar! … and I’m not a bar gal.
I was freezing in line to get in, and was worried it might be cold all night since the whole place has two open walls, since it’s a corner location. However, as soon as I got to the front, heaters were blasting and I didn’t think of the cold again tool i walked to my car.
The outside is very misleading. I’d never know there were so many comfortable seats, bars, TV and games!
Big Jenga and American shuffleboard had me interacting and smiling and hollering and high-​fiving most of the night. I met a few new friends, Albert aka «our hero», Chris P. My fellow blue team shuffleboard winning team buddy, Monique my other winning blue team buddy…
And there are old tried and true Unilocal friends like Judy and Steve on big Jenga, Jimmy «the gourmet» D. getting my skyy pineapple tip –Thank you! Hugs and greetings from Chris and Chris and Dan and Jeff and Nettle and Shalini and Maria and so just many more Unilocaler friends … aww, Unilocal family! This was a great venue the activities and space were perfect to get to socialize in.
The food was fried so I’m not really into it, but I really liked the Tater tots and the fried jalapeños. I surprisingly didn’t care for the sweet potatoe tots. They’d have been better as fries, imho. As for drinks, my mule was yummy and the Skyy pineapple drink was yummy; I copied Judy.
I also really liked the service.
Overall food and drinks were plentiful and speedy. Everyone was smiling and kind. The people behind the bar, our server at our booth, and even the basketball tournament MC with the funky outfit was cool ;)

My first fried pickles! And they were surprisingly deeeeeelicioooooous. Tangy and and crunchy.
My first beer pong! Mega giant version of it on the patio. It was fuuuuuuun. There was also shuffle board, video games, Jenga, Etch-​a-​Sketches all over, and basketball. Lots of interactive fun with the usual lively Unilocal Elite and plus-​ones crowd, especially with us sporting university t-​shirts from our alma maters or colleges we like rooting for.
It was a great event with way too much fried food than I normally consume during county fair season. The sweet potato tots were especially tasty. I also enjoyed the mini corn dogs, regular tots, fried jalapenos, and onion rings. There was thick Ranch sauce and a slightly spicy and creamy dip to dunk your fried goodies. Bub’s was generous with food passed on trays by servers as well as a buffet line, and the hosted free drinks. The Bub’s mule and the Ballast Point Longfin Lager were quite refreshing.
Instead of the usual labels, the Unilocal organizers introduced plastic nametags and lanyards, so that we can be Earth-​friendly and reuse our name tags next time. LOVED personalizing and coloring my name tag and adding flair to my lanyard with the mini Unilocal buttons and the «People love me on Unilocal» stickers.

What a WONDERFUL event!
Brad always rocks these things, but paired with the INCREDIBLE staff at Bub’s this was a home run event ;) — pun intended!
The drinks & food flowed all night & when a keg emptied rather than calling it, they switched to an IPA to keep the Elites going strong! Customer service was above & beyond and impressed me greatly!
The Elites came out in style & sported their Jerseys proving arch nemesis & rivals can gather in one place for a good time. Amazing event!

Okay, hashtags are all the rage nowadays, so I want to slap #deepfriederrythang all over this event.
Now that I have that out of the way, I’d like to thank our fearless CM Brad for an absolutely fantastic event. I’d been to Bub’s before, and it usually feels like a typical fratty college bar, but it turns into something quite different when an army of Unilocalers invades. It becomes more laid-​back, more upbeat, more fun.
The food was a maddeningly addictive array of deep-​fried goodies, including fried chicken, tater tots, fried pickles, tater tots — and my new favorite: sweet potato tots! My arteries hate all the #beigefood (another handy hashtag for you) and my tastebuds love it.
The drinks were flowing oh so freely. I alternated between the Ballast Point Longfin Lager and the Bub’s mule, but everyone seemed to enjoy all their different Skyy vodka drinks.
I’d say my first Unilocal event of 2014 was a smashing success. How about a hashtag to round out this review? In the spirit of lots more events to come: #cantstopwontstop (Oh, who am I kidding? I suck at hashtags.)
