I used to lovvvvvveeeee the cakes here. As a kid I would only want my birthday cake only from here. I’ve ordered 3 cakes from here 20122014 and 2015. All 3 times were a big disappointment. I was so dissatisfied with the cakes. They’re not how they used to be. They’re so dry. I understand it is a sponge cake but it is soooo dry. I couldn’t even enjoy it I needed a sip a water with every bite. Word going around is that the owners kids are now making the cakes. But who knows. I don’t know them. I just wish they would fix the recipe back to how it used to be.

Bought multiple cakes from this location!!! Have been going there for 10 years and I’ve never been disappointed! Their cakes are so fresh and they decorate literally on the spot! Check out this mom and pop shops. It’s always nice to support small businesses :)

It is an old shop, yet it offers better price and better taste for healthy cake. The options for the cake is considerable, and it offers more individual services.

Got in here asking for French bread which they didn’t have. They friendly directed me to the Paris Bakery across the street, but felt a little curious to try a Chinese pastry. I ended up getting a piece of mini cheesecake for 1.25. It was incredibly dry, and almost fake. It has been sitting there probably for a week. I will avoid this place. It’s just not my type of thing.

For the love of authentic Chinese cakes close to what you get at Chinatown LA. This is the place to be. We like to get bananas and strawberries as filling. Cake is always delicious and not sweet as other cakes so that’s a plus.

I love me some Chinese cake. If you’ve never had a cake from a Chinese bakery, you’re missing out. Chinese cakes are sponge cakes, filled with fruit(usually strawberry or some sort of fruit cocktail mixture), with very light and airy white frosting. The cakes are always light, fluffy and NOTTOOSWEET. Very delicious. The cakes at Chinese bakery uphold the definition of a Chinese bakery cake as I just described. I got a small strawberry cake for mother’s day(I think it’s about 6 inches in diameter) and the thing was $ 8. Yes, EIGHTDOLLARS. Wow… that is hella cheap. Not only is it very inexpensive, it’s also very delicious. The middle aged lady and young man who helped me were very polite and courteous. I got exactly what I needed and they even put toasted, thinly sliced almonds on the side of the cake. That added great flavor and a crunchy texture to the cake. While I was there, another family was ordering a cake. This lady wanted a soccer cake for her young son’s birthday. It was a Friday and they said the cake would be ready by Saturday and it was $ 29. Can you imagine how much more that would cost at an American bakery? The inside of the bakery leaves a lot to be desired. The glass display cases and clear glass refrigerator doors look pretty old and are a total eye sore. But the cake speaks for itself and for the value, look and taste of the cake, they earned my 5 stars.

Cake is tasty but, the display case that contains all the other treats have flies in it which to me, is disturbing and disgusting.

This place used to be my go to place to get all birthday cakes. Ever since new management and new owners, I have had not one agreeable moment with these people. I gave this place 3 chances to make 3 different cakes, 3 different times, and still nothing good was a result. First time I ordered a custom cake. It was nothing extravagant. I just wanted the cake mostly purple with strawberry filling and pink and white border to match a color scheme to a party I was throwing… The cake came out to be pink with white borders and no fruit filling. 2nd time… I ordered just a regular white cake with strawberry filling with absolutely no almonds. Cake came out fine but they sprinkled almonds around it, so I had to settle for a pre-made cake with no fruit fillings. 3rd time… I ordered yet another simple cake with strawberry filling and they had put in coconut. Like really now?! I gave them three chances to get at least one order right and they couldn’t. Never again. 3 strikes you’re out.

Bought a strawberry cake for my son’s baptism. The cake was fresh and very light. Not too sweet either, that’s why I love asian cakes. The shop itself, it’s a family run store. Cash only. I asked the guy if they can do a baptism cake with a cross design on it, and he wasn’t sure what I was talking about. So I opted for blue flowers just to avoid confusion. Paid the cake in full before the pick up date. The guy just told me take a picture of the paper he wrote the cake order on, and show it when I pick it up. I thought it was a little sketch, but all went well. I’d definitely order cake from here again.

Delicious light cake with amazing strawberry and coconut filling for a reasonable price. A nice quaint family owned bakery. I totally recommend it!

I feel jipped! About a year ago I didn’t feel that way: $ 7 for the round miniature«strawberry» cake. This year: $ 8 round miniature cake with no strawberries in it. There’s other Chinese bakery’s in the area. So why, screw the customers that walk in yours?

My birthday cake tasted just the same as I remember when I was a kid. Delicious, not too sweet. A 10 inch hlf strawberry, hlf coconut, with sliced toasted almonds on the side. Had fresh fruit on top of a 10 inch for $ 24. Fed my whole family of like 15 with a good size piece for each. Picked up some coconut bread & egg custards too. Yum

I tried the strawberry coconut cake at a birthday party I went to. It was just okay, but better than the other coffee cake that was also at the party. I’m not sure which bakery that one was from… The decorations were so plain. I’ll have to try their infamous coconut bread one day!

This is a modest, little bakery on El Cajon Blvd.- a few blocks from our favorite phở place in San Diego(Phở Hua). I’ve had this bookmarked for some time. I miss the Chinese bakeries from Brea/northeast LA County, so I’ve been on the hunt for a similar equivalent in San Diego(Pangea on Convoy being the closest joint I’ve located so far). It’s a cute little shop, complete with Chinese grandpa sitting inside by the door reading the newspaper. A really nice gentleman greeted us and was easy to communicate with. He answered all our questions about the different pastry snacks, and we purchased: egg tarts, coconut tart, mung bean pastry(small and large), and a couple of other yummies. The egg tarts were okay. Nothing to write home about. The custard was tasty and very vanilla flavored but the crust was lacking a bit(it wasn’t flaky and crispy). The mung bean small pastries were okay, filled with dense yellow bean and a thin pastry outside. We have yet to try the other goodies purchased. The bakery is cash only. The prices are extraordinary: a small box filled to the brim cost only $ 7. I’d give it 3.5 stars with a round up for being small and family owned. Not quite the Chinese bakery I was seeking but it was ok. Wouldn’t return but it’s worth a try. Perhaps my palate wasn’t suited for these particular types of desserts.

Let me share with you a story: My lovely boyfriend has a thing for Chinese cakes. As a person from hickville, CA, I have no idea what that means. After many questions about what exactly makes a «chinese» cake vs what I have known to be «regular cake,» I found this place on Unilocal. I was automatically excited because I LOVE City Heights and want to give the city my business. I looked at reviews and was even more excited – people say that the strawberry cake is THE thing, and boyfriend has a thing for strawberries – match made in heaven? So December rolls around and bf has a birthday coming up. I call the Sunday before a Wednesday pick up date, and the man on the phone is friendly and answers the questions I surely could have found online(pricing options, size options). After 5 minutes on the phone, I have an order placed for a 4:30 pickup for a 10in strawberry cake with almonds that says«Happy Birthday(Boyfriend)!» Not bad! Boyfriend said that the cake is good, so it passes the test of the true critic. Service, price, location, parking, and product all get great reviews from me! I would absolutely come back for my cake needs, and would love to try their other items as well!

Egg custards could use another minute in the oven. I tried them on two separate occasions and it wasn’t a fluke, it’s how it’s made. If you like ‘em that way and a little wobbly soft towards the center, here’s the place to get ‘em. Skip the mini red velvet cupcake even though it’s only a buck and a half and a bite’s worth. Skip it, you’re welcome. The mungo(sp?) bean. edible, but there’s better out there. Not much of a pastry selection overall as what’s in their case is limited. Though, I’m guessing their business does well on customized cakes and why they stay in business. Good for them and hopeful that continues. Just keep that in mind when you decide on what you come in here for.

BESTCAKEEVER! Today is my birthday and my best friend had a cake made for me! We all enjoyed it do much! Strawberries & Coconut, yum. Not overly sweet, great texture. I’m hooked and will drive from Clairemont to get the next cake. I just found out that they make coconut bread and pork buns, my favorites! I’m a fan.

I’m not a fan of the American cakes where the frosting is just over the top sweet so if I get a chance to buy a cake from this bakery, I will. I pretty much don’t buy any other cakes. Their best selling cake is their Strawberries cake. The frosting is super light, amazing, and cheap. They have various sizes and their selection is small, but I think they’re pretty well stocked of the kinds they do have. I believe they also have a Coconut one and there’s a cake where you can have half coconut and half strawberries. You can pre-order a specialized one or just pick up a general one and they can write on it and color in the roses.
