Went last night with some friends. The place was almost empty, the ambient was good, but we had the worst service I have ever experienced. The waitress, Amanda, would throw things on our table. She didn’t care if the beer spilled on our car keys or purses or anything, she just threw the glass on the table. When we asked her about certain beers she would respond with a rude attitude and would walk away while we where talking to her. I asked if she had a certain beer and she answered with«No, you want a light beer! that’s what I will bring you!» and walked off. This place has the ambience, but I would not go back because of the horrible service. They should train their servers better.

Having a fabulous time! Brittney is taking excellent care of us, and her recommendations are on point. Munching on duck fat chicarrones and fish and chips. Just had the most excellent house made Bloody Mary — poblano infused vodka with homemade Bloody Mary mix. Will definitely be back!

Great bar. Real cocktails. Plenty of unique beers on tap. Big screen TV at one end — high quality picture. The menu is more complex than typical bar food — in a unique way that’s good. Bartenders and waitstaff connect to the people they are serving. This is a great addition to north central SA. And you don’t have to cross 1604. Always a plus. Oh yeah, outside and inside are both good.

I’ve been wanting to check out Hoppy Monk since it opened, but couldn’t get to it till this past weekend. The experience was not worth the wait and I’m more than sure I won’t be going back. You seat yourself, which wasn’t a problem, but the wait staff really doesn’t keep track of new guests. The female waitress wasn’t great. First she only brought 1 menu for a party of 3 and just left. Didn’t take any time to explain to us any specials, if we were ready to make a drink order, etc. Here visits were very infrequent and she was always rushing off, so of course we were rushing and I felt almost like an inconvenience. We all got our drinks separate from one another, waters went empty and stayed that way, and the food wasn’t that great. My favorite part was when we were told, after waiting 8 minutes for my food, the kitchen had run out of ground beef. How are you going to run out of a product that is on 3 of our menu items, especially on a Saturday?! The food wasn’t great either. My ruben sandwich had hardly any flavor and the bread was not evenly toasted. The confit fries were just greasy and had none of the traditional confit taste. All of us got fries in our dishes and the experience was mutual. We didn’t bother saying anything because any waitress that feels comfortable wearing an oversized bracelet that says«BITCH» on it clearly works for management that doesn’t care. I do like the extensive selection of brews, but the prices are excessive. I frequent a lot of craft beer places throughout SA and Hoppy Monk is easily the most expensive for the pour. I will say this though. There happened to be a secondary waiter, who looked like a brunette TJ Miller, that might have made this experience a bit better. This guy came in at the end of our stay numerous times to check on us, take up any plates/glassware we had and genuinely seemed to care. The guy was on point. Too bad he didn’t come to the rescue earlier. The overall experience will stay with me and prevent me from coming back. Too bad, I waited so long.

Have been here multiple times, usually just for drinks and/or appetizers. Love the variety of beers on tap. Dined outside for restaurant week during lunch not realizing there was only one waiter on duty. He gave us a heads up and was running all over the place. Mac of the moment was great. Received the bacon and egg burger despite ordering the blue fox burger. Still a great burger, no complaints. The ice cream of the moment was sweet potato with a sort of maple crumble. Absolutely delicious. All in all. Friendly service and great food. The beer will keep me returning.

First time here and it’s thigh sticking good!!! I can’t believe it’s taken this long for me to get over here. The duck tacos are amazing! My hubby had a burger with an egg… YUM!!!

I love how they have 99 different beers on tap! Plus, they have an eclectic menu with lots of different choices for dishes. Gochu IPA Wings(4.5÷5): I want to say they give you 6⁄7 pieces for the plate and the flavor is good. The sauce was savory and the wings were coated generously. Moules Frites(5⁄5): The presentation of this dish is so cute! They give you a good amount of muscles, at least enough for me to think it’s worth the price. The muscles taste fresh, doesn’t have a sandy texture you’ll find at other places. The garlic sauce the muscles are coated in is so good you’ll want to use the bread as a sponge to get every last bite Love the chill atmosphere here! I can’t wait for it to get warmer so I can chill outside and enjoy a cold brew

This place has an endless selection of craft beer and craft food. The beer is cold and the bartenders know them well, as well as the history behind the brews. The brunch is fantastic, as well as the lunch/dinner. I have a LOT of respect for places that not only serve unique craft good, but also buy locally. There are a few vegan options as well! There is a lot of seating indoors and out and is perfect for large groups. The patio is dog friendly with water bowls available. This place is definitely one to check out if you haven’t!

This place is getting a 5 because of phenomenal customer service, great beer selection, cool ambiance, and of course yummy food! Sadly, when we went there were a few things they had run out of. The manger came to the table to apologize and make recommendations which was truly appreciated. In the end we had the Korean wings, I had a burger, and my hubby had the tongue Reuben on a different type of bread than usual. The wings were crunchy, full of flavor, and mildly spicy. Overall, really good and I would get it again. My burger was juicy and well cooked and my husband’s tongue Reuben was moist and tender. We were very pleased with the food. The beer was the best! I was able to get Chimay on draft which I’ve never seen before. They had ciders to please my husband as well. I’ll def be going back whether it’s good drinks only or food too.

Came here for a foodie meet up event. The service was great even with a large unorganized group! Had my favorite beer the 512 pecan porter. Yummy as always. Veggie empanadas were AMAZING. I will definitely come back for these. Tried some of the fried mushrooms, lightly battered and perfectly crispy. Also tried the wings, which were delicious, loved the sauce. Overall, great place to have some food and a beer or two with a friend or a large group of strangers :)!

Well, this was a pleasant surprise. Went down to a Unilocal event in San Antonio, and after hanging out with some of our favorite Unilocalers, we decided to check out another place nearby. Trotted into Hoppy Monk, and there only a few others in the place(it was pretty late during the week). We grabbed a spot at the bar and started joking with the bartender. We sampled a few things and made our selections. Great selection, way different from what you’d find at any pub in Austin. Knowledgeable bartenders that knew their selection well. Full bar for those that aren’t interested in beer. Open late, so you can have another round. We had a good time. If ever in that part of town, I’d go back.

Man I tell you… I really like this place. Generally has pretty spot on service, nice selection of beers and the food is really quite good. The menu varies and it is generally always pretty tasty. The friend mushrooms are a perfect umami bomb with fresh mushrooms encased with a nice beer batter proffering a burst of flavor when you bite into them to the fish of the day which varies but always boasts perfectly cooked fish and side dishes(miso glazed kobia over quinoa and kale chip) that are worthy of stardom on their own. Burgers are always delivered perfectly cooked. Fries can be crazy good one day and just chewy burnt another, but such is life of a fry cook. The thing that gets me is I cannot seem to escape from there without taking a hit in my moneybelt/fanny pack hard enough to make my kidneys hurt. Tiny(looks like 6 oz pours) of a sour ale can set you back 9 bucks and they don’t really tell you what size pour it is. This is one of my pet peeves: under the guise of serving the beer«correctly» you get a pour skimpy enough to not drown a fly. I guess they are helping to ensure that you cannot have more than two beers and helping the DUI problem in the country. I would rather they offer free Über-X rides, but then that’s just me. So the strategy: go during happy hour and get their happy hour pints which are generally real pints and enjoy their apps which really are quite good and make them worthy of being deemed a gastropub.

I am allergic to alcohol. Therefore, I don’t frequent many bars or gastropubs. But sometimes I tag along as the designated driver. So here I was for the«What the FUNK?! Sour Tap Takeover» event with my husband and some friends. Cool atmosphere. Pub was bigger and more open than I had imagined. Lots of beer on tap. Lunchtime seems quite family friendly. Saw plenty of families with young children. For the Sour Tap Takeover, each guest was allowed to have 3 complimentary samples. My group took full advantage of that and was able to try almost all of the sour beer offerings. After our samples, the group selected 8 different drinks and we ordered 6 food items. The food was good. The drinks were good(I enjoyed my Coke very much). Service was good. Really no complaints. But the markup on everything seemed a bit steep. You have to have deep pockets to get a good buzz on at Hoppy Monk… which we don’t. So we moved our party to the Whole Foods down the street. Bought more sour beers there and finished our beer tour in WF’s café. Not exactly the same atmosphere, but much more affordable. Overall, it was a cool event as it allowed our sour beer loving group to sample a variety of sour beers. Glad we decided to check it out.

Was intro-ed to this place by some SA Unilocalers and I could not have been happier to come in late on a Tuesday night. The beer selection here is pretty fantastic and their whisky/bourbon selection is magnificent as well. The service was quick and courteous and the bartender, Josh(aka Bill Murray because he was rocking a t-shirt w/his face on it) was gracious enough to indulge our tomfoolery. A great place to grab a late night craft brew pint in SA! I cannot wait to come back and try the food!

As one of the few decent food options for late night grub, Hoppy Monk gets a 4 mostly for that. I love the outdoor space here with wooden tables and string lights. My fiancé and I came here after 12 am on a weekday on our way back from the San Marcos outlets. I had been meaning to try Hoppy Monk for a while and since it was late we didn’t have many options, so Hoppy Monk seemed promising for late night food based on Unilocal reviews. They definitely get points for serving decent food up until 2 am on the weekdays. There aren’t many options in San Antonio for late night sit down food that isn’t a diner or fast-food. We ordered the bacon and egg burger, double fried Korean wings, and the salad with fried goat cheese balls. The double fried Korean wings were probably our favorite. The sauce was tasty and the wings were super crispy! The portion is large and is definitely enough for a meal. While the bacon and egg burger was good, it wasn’t as good as Whiskey Cake’s OMG burger or Hopdoddy’s. The bread was lackluster and eggs on burgers are getting a little old to me. Don’t get me wrong, the burger is still good, just not amazing or that unique. The salad was pretty good, but could have had a better dressing with more flavor. I liked how they fried the goat cheese. I thought it was a unique and I can definitely get used to fried cheese balls on any type of salad. They have a good variety of alcoholic drinks here. I ordered a fruity cocktail and my fiancé ordered a beer that the waiter recommended. We were both satisfied with our drinks. Overall, Hoppy Monk wouldn’t be my first choice for food during the day, but this is a great place to go if you want to hang out with friends on the patio and get some good quality food and drinks or need a decent late night food option.

There’s beer here for everybody, unless you’re a Miller/Bud/Coors type of person. If you are, just drive on by as there’s nothing for you to see here. Move along, please, move along. If you’re a craft beer enthusiast, then this is your place as they have an extensive number of taps plus bottle and canned beer. Hell, even if you’re not into beer, they have spirits to make your favorite boozy concoction. And when you start getting the munchies, the only thing you need to remember is this: bacon and egg burger. If that’s not your thing, their vegan empanadas and wings are an excellent choice. Hell, you can’t go wrong with anything on the menu. You can drunkenly munch on your food either inside or on the cool little patio, while attempting to stack the Jenga blocks For San Antonio, I really enjoy the beers they carry but would like to see more Texas beers, especially from our neighboring, hipster city to the north. Bonus points for the cool mix of music covering different genres. You’re welcome. No need to thank me; just buy me an IPA next time.

I got to come here with a friend last night! We were so excited to have a hip gastropub like this in the stone oak area! We sat ourselves at a table inside. If the weather was nicer, we would’ve sat on the amazing patio with games and lights on the deck. I ordered: 1. Moscow mule: I tend to judge places by how they make this drink. The drink was mild but they definitely didn’t butcher it, so I was happy with that. This is a beer place, so I will give them the benefit of the doubt for my drink. Entrée: BACONANDEGGBURGER. This is seriously decadent. The egg was so runny, but it made my burger juicy. The bacon and whatever else was in the burger gave it so much flavor. I could have 2 of these suckers… My friend got the Korean wings and I LOVED the sauce that came on them. There were plenty of wings, so you can order that as a meal if you wanted. The hoppy monk will def be my go to place for drinks and food now. Can’t wait to try their happy hour!

Sing along with me: 99 taps of beer on the wall, 99 options on draft, take one down, pass it around, 98 choices to go! This joint has, you guessed it, 99 incredible taps on the wall. If that alone isn’t enough to piqué your interest, they’re largely smaller-distribution craft beers and the bartenders are knowledgeable about all of them. Chat about what you like and sample a few things, you’ll find something worth ordering– if you’re into porters and stouts, they have espresso, cappuccino, and Chai-spice versions. But that’s not all! The food is incredible. This a place doing«gastropub» right. Duck carnitas street tacos on gochujang tortillas, a Reuben made with house-cured lengua, and burgers with toppings like onion jam, bacon marmalade, and roasted walnut aioli? Shut the friggin’ door. Don’t even get me started on their vegetarian friendly and organic options, the skillet-roasted Brussels sprouts with ham, preserved lemon, and shallots are amazing. The space itself has plenty of room, indoors or out, to meet with friends or grab a meal. I’m a big believer in bellying up to the bar for the best experience, but you really can’t go wrong here. An amazing place to have in SA!
