I have only had the spicy fish soup and the beef needle mushroom hot pot and both are very delicious The staff is very nice and it is a quiet atmosphere.

Mediocre quality for higher prices. Very rigid when asking for substitutes, I. e pork instead of beef. Sauces very dull tastes.

Great chinese, which is a challenge to find in this area. The lunch specials are inexpensive and tasty.

Great food! Service polite and prompt. Pork buns were the best we have had in San Antonio. Large portions and priced adequately. The owners two school children in the restaurant were extremely well behaved they even opened the door for a handicap individual and said hi to some regulars. Definitely will return!

Great Americanized Chinese food. But get adventurous for a real treat. Try the hot pot or spicy chicken. Their war wonton soup is some of the best in town. Place was PACKED at lunch but they moved the tables quickly. They also do a decent business at dinner. My daughter would eat every meal here if she could.

This serious is my favorite place to eat. I love their dishes and you really must try the hot and spicy chicken. But it isn’t for the faint of heart. Staff is always courteous. Love love love this place.

As many others have noted, quality here has taken a precipitous drop since they first opened. No longer recommended for good authentic food, unfortunately.

Just read Fidel’s comments, and a few others. Thought I’d chime in, as I feel some of the things being said are spot on. Food and service took a dramatic change for the worse a few months ago. Based on my last experience, I wondered if maybe this place had a new owner, and that seems to be confirmed by recent posts — have not been back since and I was a regular. Sad to see what has happened to Tang St. because it was one of the few authentic Sichuan restaurants in SA — My Xi’an friends swore it was THE best Chinese in town. I may give them another try one if these days but not in any hurry to go back — good thing there still are Sichuan House and Sichuan Cuisine.

Quick and they have lunch specials on Saturday. Don’t expect a smile, but they have hot tea.

New owners,(original owners moved to CA) not the same anymore. We always got the usual and the flavor was not there. We ordered again and STILL not the same. Food quality of sweet and sour chicken, and sesame chicken is what we always order. So, I guess it’s an end to a great run for Tang St!

Ok. Things got REAL at Tang Street this evening. First and foremost, I must say, our food was DELICIOUS. What warrants the 2 star review was EVERYTHINGELSE. My husband and I arrived on a slow Monday evening. There were two other couples in the restaurant, finishing their food. We walked in and were not greeted. We stood aimlessly at the front door and finally I looked over a a girl on the phone and pointed at a table. She nodded her head and we sat down. We sat for approximately 5 minutes and waited to be greeted. One waitress was wondering around. The lady at the counter was on the phone. Soon two small children who seemed to be alone started acting slightly wild. The woman on the phone scolded them and got off the phone. These children would be a source of entertainment for the rest of our meal. We observed the waitress stand around, enjoy a beverage, and look around aimlessly. My husband looked at me and I looked at him, as we had yet to even be acknowledged and finally she walked over. She took our beverage orders, brought them out and then walked about 3 steps away and hovered while we finished deciding about our orders. We gave her our order and off she went. Our food arrived promptly. We ordered an order of crab rangoon, sesame chicken, and chicken lo mein.(Yes. I know. We are real thrill seekers!) Our food was piping hot. Everything delicious. I would have eaten here 1000 times over had I not observed the rest… The children in the restaurant were a bit unruly. They wandered around. Made noise. Yelled. Ran in and out of the kitchen. Played swords. Things that children do. The cook came out and loved on the children. I assume he and his wife(the lady on the phone) are the owners and these are their children. Toys and games covered two tables in the restaurant. I assume that is the children’s space. The restaurant is not place for children. A place of business is not the place for your children. While I love children, I was really hoping for some peace and quiet. But I can deal with children. They were cute. What really turned my stomach was when I witnessed both the boy and the girl disciplined. In the restaurant, for doing things that children do. In front of customers. While I did not understand the discipline due to the language barrier, I witnessed the little boy be popped in the mouth. Probably for being loud. And I witnessed many harsh sounding words too both children. The harshness in the tone stung me a little. I felt bad for them. Its not their fault that they have to hang out at mom and dads work all evening. No one came to check on us during our visit after our food was brought out. Only after we started packing up our things did the waitress offer more drinks. She brought the check and my husband paid. I will not return to this restaurant. The professionalism is not there. The service was not there. And I don’t want to hear you yell at your children while I am eating my dinner.

This is my favorite place for lunch! I probably go here about twice a week. I work in the complex so it’s super convenient, and they always have my food ready within 15 minutes(this is to go, keep in mind it may be different for dine in). The service is always friendly and the manager knows it’s me when I call to order. She knows I only like water with my lunch and has it ready to go for me! I come here pretty often but she had this all figured out pretty early on which made me feel like my business was important and that I wasn’t just another customer. I’m obsessed with their sesame chicken and the cream cheese wonton pastry thing. I could eat those allll day and be a happy girl. The food is always consistent too, so every time I order I know it’s going to be just as yummy as the last time. I will keep coming back as long as Tang St stays around!

diluted Chinese food. Service was fast; our main dishes came out seconds after our soup. At no point did our waitress ask us how spicy we might want our food(which possibly contributed to the very mild food). There was an employee’s child, presumably, sleeping in the dining room. — hot and sour soup: neither spicy hot, nor sour. It looked and tasted like egg drop with brown sauce added and a few veggie bits. — cumin beef(marked«spicy» by the chili pepper): mild, not spicy in the least. cumin flavor was good. — orange chicken: sugary sweet.

Order exclusively from the«Tang Street Specials» section of the menu(or the hotpots, listed separately) and you should have a good experience. If you order from the lunch specials or opt for anything that sounds like you could have bought it at Panda Express, don’t be surprised when your food tastes like it could be found in a mall food court. The shredded pork with eggplant was phenomenal. Great herbal aroma, silky eggplant, beautifully plated. Could have used more pork, but other than that, a stellar dish. The Tang Street Homestyle Clay Pot was a little less impressive: generous mix of pork, shrimp, and tofu, with veggies, in a savory sauce, but lacked any sort of wow factor. My sister is significantly less adventurous and opted for the kung pao chicken. Generous portion of lightly-breaded white meat, with few peppers and onions. Basic, well executed, good option for kids. Got the steamed dumplings as an app and should have forgone them– we had more than enough food as it was, and the dumplings were unremarkable. For a place that offers soup dumplings, I figured these would be well done but they were very average. All of the dishes we had came with choice of steamed or fried rice– both were fine. Would appreciate the option for brown rice in the future. Found it odd that none of the dishes were spicy at all, despite the pork/eggplant dish having a chili pepper next to it on the menu. At no point were we asked for any sort of spice level, so I guess they default to zero, which is extremely odd for a place hyped for authenticity.

They shouldn’t advertise Delivery when they BARK at you on the Phone that they don’t do delivery, well that is of course if they even answer the phone. I’d rather risk food poisoning at Panda Express than to show any support to these AHOLES

I really wanted to love Tang Street but I’m not sure I’ll be coming back. Don’t get me wrong, the food is good but that’s about it. Just good. Certainly nothing amazing but also nothing terrible. The dumplings were better than average and everything else just left me feeling underwhelmed. Couple that with ill-timed service and a weird atmosphere in the dining room and I just don’t know that I’ll need to return.

Get the chopsticks out! Just off 281… Arrived at 8:00pm for dinner for 2. We were the only guests at first but a few more tables soon arrived. More authentic style, small and quaint. No music playing made it kinda awkward to dine in a quiet restaurant. PROTIP: I noticed a diner came in with his own beer! Ambience: When we arrived the place was super quiet. Tables were appropriately presented. There is a TV in the corner. Cashier as you enter and go. Orange chicken: nicely flavored and thick sauce. Small pieces of orange peel give it an authenticity. Better than Panda Express! Mongolian Beef: Beef was undercooked, flavor was average. The sauce was light and watery. Doesn’t compare to any of the Chinatowns I’ve been to around the country. Combination chow mein lo mein: Combo of shrimp, chicken and beef. The flavor was great. Not too salty, hint of sweetness. Was not a fan of the noodles, was more like a flat noodle vs a round. Good mix between the shrimps and meats though. Prices were very fair and portions were not too small or large but just right. Overall, the food was good but nothing like an NYC, San Fran or LA Chinatown. I’ll be back to try other menu dishes and maybe bring my own beer!

So, this place is more your authentic Chinese food, which I like. Not your Americanized chinese food for example Lemon Chicken, Sesame Chicken, etc. That’s what brought us here. Checked out the pictures on Unilocal and thought it was worth a try. First off it’s a small Chinese restaurant, has that oily smell when you walk in and the floors are sticky. Seems like it’s been around for a while. The waitress was very nice, helpful and attentive which was great. The food was not quite what I expected. Maybe I’m spoiled to the real deal when I’ve gone to Houston or San Francisco. I was expecting more, the pictures look great but the food lacked depth. A lot of it was just spicy… I don’t mind spicy if it has a good flavor but it was just spicy. Now, I will say that I really enjoyed the steamed bun appetizer and really liked the shredded pork with eggplant dish. Those items were delicious and my family agreed. Don’t know if I’ll venture back out here. For those that haven’t tried authentic chinese food then this is a nice place to check out some of the dishes. San Antonio doesn’t have a lot of «authentic» chinese food restaurants.
