Anybody know what happened to The Mexican Cowboy? Did they go out of business? Move to a new location maybe? I’m hoping the latter because they served the best lengua guisada tacos in town! It’s a place called Sabor now. Gonna try the breakfast tacos while I’m here but they don’t even have lengua on the menu… Not that it would be as good anyway…

Great little place to hit up for breakfast! Homemade all the way, even fresh tortillas! Family, friendly service and delicious food! The chilaquiles plate and barbacoa are money!

I wanted some tacos for breakfast and decided to try the place based on a friend’s recommendation. I was glad I did! The tacos were huge! Fresh, nicely made, all good. Service was attentive, and fast. The coffee was good, I could not have asked for a more enjoyable breakfast. I urge you to try this locally owned restaurant. I think you’ll be really glad you did. Oh, by the way-they are closed on Mondays.

There was nothing that stood out about this place. Nothing, to make me want to support this small family establishment.

Mexican cowboy has the best caldos I have had anywhere except in Mexico. They are only open for breakfast and lunch… definitely not out of business!

I just realized I hadn’t added my review for this place from last year. I’ve copied it here. Wow! We’ve lived in SoCal for a big part of our lives but my husband and I have only lived in Texas for 2 years. We are so tired of «tex-mex» slop. This morning my husband ran over to Mexican Cowboy and there is hope for Texas! This place shines. It’s clean and feels homey. The customer service was out of this world. The woman working there(owner?) greeted other customers by name, and was super friendly and helpful. Our order was to-go, but she sat him down with a coffee while our food was prepared. We ordered 5 tacos and the cost was only $ 6. They were SO delicious! I look forward to going back again and again.

I would probably give this place four stars if I’d never eaten in the restaurant. The other reviewer is right, service was not great. I know sometimes it takes longer to prepare good food(and many of their dishes are slow-stewed), but the wait was just too long. However, I do like to pick up tacos and cevice from there. Very good, in my opinion. All the breakfast tacos I’ve had are delicious, and their tortas are good too, I’ve had both the al pastor and steak a la mexicana; I think I prefer the steak torta. Their ceviche tastes a little like the seafood is pre-steamed then seasoned… but it’s pretty good. My advice is pick up the food and you’ll be happy.

We had been going for some time but this time ended it for good. We went earlier with our two little girls. It felt like we were lepers! Owner talked to every table except us. We ordered and waited, and waited, and waited. Mean while, people were walking in giving their orders waiting and leaving with big bags of food. I counted four people that came in AFTER us, ordered and got their food first! We did not order complicated food! Come on, 30 mins for a bean and cheese taco? We will never go back and I will let everyone I know the same.

Last night, a friend of mine told me that she had seen a sign for the VN Bistro out on 1604. I thought they might have reopened out there, so I took a drive on the way to Starbucks and HEB today. The good news is that they do plan to open up near Fast Freddies, as there is a sign on the window that says,” VN Bistro Coming Soon”. Don’t rush over though. It is still just an empty store space. Since I was unable to eat Phở, I decided to go to Papo’s, but it looked closed today. I ended up at Starbucks and almost went on in. Hunger wouldn’t let me, so I drove around the shopping center looking for eateries. You can read my review of House of Joy to see why that was definitely not going to happen. Anyway, I saw Mexican Cowboy across the lot and decided to give it a try. I had seen it on passing through before, but it really never got my attention enough to stop. Take my word for it– that was my loss! I liked this little place. It is small with about ten tables and is decorated with rich homey colors. One wall has a bunch of those little signs with kitchen sayings like, «Never trust a skinny cook!» Overall, the restaurant is warm and cozy. I felt very comfortable there. I was also happy to see that it was clean. The menu offers a few things not found at all Mexican restaurants. There were several different lengua offerings. I ordered the Lengua a la Mexicana Plate. It came with re-fried beans, rice, salad, and two tortillas, which is fairly standard in San Antonio for any plate at a Mexican restaurant. While I waited for my meal, I ate the entire bowl of chips! The salsa was so tasty that I just couldn’t stop. The fresh flavors of the chilies, onions, garlic, and tomatoes all came through. I wonder if they will sell it in jars to take home. I saw a sign that said they do catering. I’ll ask next time I am there. When the plate was served to me, it looked so good I took a photo of it with my phone. Everything was laid out in such a nice way. The beans had a large sprinkling of queso fresco. I have never seen that done anywhere. The salad was topped with half of a small avocado cut into thin slices. The rice was a pretty color and had bright yellow pieces of corn in it. The lengua was a rich dark brown with pieces of green chili, red tomatoes, and white onions throughout. It looked very festive. I started with a small forkful of rice. It was nice and firm and full of a delicious brothy flavor. Next, I tasted the beans. They were equally flavorful. Finally, I scooped up some of the lengua. I was totally blown away by the rich beefy flavor that burst through my mouth with every chew. I am going to say that that bite of Lengua a la Mexicana was in my top ten flavorful bites of all times. I looked at the huge pile I saw sitting before me and wanted to cry. It was one of those magical moments when your whole being is concentrated on nothing but the taste of the food and the feeling of it sliding down your gullet. Heaven! Finally, when I took my first PERFECT flour tortilla from the holder and put a little bit of everything in it the way I like to do and tasted it, a vibrating pulse of raw sensual pleasure rocketed through my entire being. I truly believe that I have found my new favorite food. Unfortunately, I found it way too close to home. This could be a very dangerous development for me. I hope I don’t start going from Starbucks to the Mexican Cowboy for tacos every morning on the way to work. Even running every other day won’t help keep the weight off, if that happens!
