We had several pieces of treasured antique furniture which were damaged by a moving company during a cross country move. We initially contacted McCune Upholstery to assess the damage and give us a repair quote. The man who came out seemed indifferent to the process and charged us a non-refundable fee of $ 194.85 to look at our damaged furniture. Their repair quote, for nine damaged but structurally sound pieces, was $ 2,289.49 including a $ 250 pick-up & delivery fee. Being new to the area, we weren’t aware of any better options. After we submitted our claim of damage to the moving company, they sent out a local repairman to assess the damage for their report. That repairman was Pat Bonney, who is the owner and operator of Guardsman Furniture Pro. He really took his time looking at our damaged pieces and seemed to understand how much each piece meant to us. We learned during his visit that he had owned an antique shop in Boerne for many years, he was very respectful and knowledgeable towards all of our damaged antiques. We were so impressed with his caring and professional demeanor, that we decided to hire him to do the repairs rather than using McCune Upholstery. I was dreading the repair process because we were trying to unpack and settle in our new home, having the nine damaged pieces moved out would be like moving out and in all over again. That, and we would be without a bed frame or chest of drawers for an undetermined amount of time. When I contacted Pat Bonney to make an appointment for the repairs, I was pleasantly surprised to learn that none of the pieces would have to be moved out. He does the majority of his repair work on site for the convenience of his customers, and so that the pieces aren’t jostled about even more. It was such a relief to not have to unpack our chest of drawers & armoire, then have to find ways to store those items while still having access to them during the repair period. I was also very glad to not have to disassemble our bed frame, what a hassle that would have been. Pat Bonney showed up right on time the morning of the appointment, he spent ten hours patiently working on repairing our furniture. He would begin on one piece, then move on to the next while he allowed joined pieces to properly clamp. Same smooth and detail oriented rotations for sanding, and staining, and polishing. It was exactly how we would have wanted to repair the pieces ourselves, if we were experienced enough in that area. When we inspected the repairs at the end of the day, they were undetectable on most of the pieces and two of them turned out in better condition than they had been before our move. This ended up being a satisfactory and stress free conclusion to what had been a disappointing experience with our move. It is also worth noting that the cost was about half of what we had been quoted by the other company, while the quality was probably just as good. You are most likely paying for several employees wages with the other company, including the movers, rather than paying the craftsman directly. The repairs were done six months ago now and all have held up wonderfully, we have forgotten that these pieces were ever damaged. Friendly, professional, knowledgeable, and respectful, we would definitely contact this business again if we needed any furniture or upholstery repairs.
