I happened upon this winery by chance and am quite glad I did! Out of the maybe 5 – 6 Oregon wineries I have been to, this one is my favorite. The man serving us(do you still call a wine server a sommolier if it isn’t a restaurant? I have no idea) was personable and very knowledgeable. I liked everything we tasted, and this place made me appreciate Pinot Noir and Chardonnay more than I thought I could. The owner stopped by, chatted us up, and shared a really nice bottle with everyone in the tasting room. His laid back personality and the charm of his winery made me think that he had life figured out in a way that I don’t. I will certainly go back next time I’m in the area.

We were visiting from Seattle and a different winery in the area had recommended Stangeland. Quite frankly, I loved every red wine they were tasting(Pinots and Tempranillos). I am typically a Cabernet girl; I usually find pinots to be drinkable but they rarely blow me away. Stangeland changed my mind. The pinots here were complex and interesting-anything but subtle and boring. The man working the tasting room that day was knowledgeable about wine but not pretentious. Larry(the winemaker/owner) was there as well, and made some suggestions and opened up some wines from his library. This was the most welcoming tasting experience I have ever had, and the wine was really good! I highly recommend stopping here!

Stangeland Vineyards is the hidden gem just North of West Salem. Owned by Larry and Ruth Miller are definitely the salt of the earth who happen to make great wines. Vertical tastings and terrior tastings are often included with the modest tasting fee. I would recommend getting of the beating path and give Stangeland a try. Prost!

My husband and I visited Stangeland in Feb. 2011 and really enjoyed meeting Larry the owner/winemaker and tasting his wines! He spent so much time with us and let us taste some of his library wines which were fantastic. Stangeland has won numerous awards here and abroad and I highly recommend a stop. We are down to our last bottle that we brought back with us and will definitely be ordering more!

So many wines, not one that tastes even half way drinkable. These wines are more unbalanced than our economy!!! They all have that bitter bell pepper nose, and they are either too high in acidity or have that high ETOH backlash on the palate. I don’t think I would ever drink a bottle of any of these. I have to say I was quite disappointed.
