I ordered a gyro when I was there last weekend. Normally one would expect to get the traditional gyro: choice of seasoned gyro meat(lamb, chicken, beef, mutton– depends on where you get the thing), lettuce, tomato, onion, tzatziki sauce, on a some nice fluffy pita(again depends on where you get your gryo). I ordered the chicken as they had two choices, chicken or beef. What I got was chicken, in a wrap(tortilla) with lettuce and tomato and some white, flavorless wanna be «tzatziki». Needless to say I paid for the sandwich and ate it cause I was hungry as all get out. It was the saddest excuse for an attempt at a gyro I had ever seen. The other people I was with thoroughly enjoyed their food, the staff was awesome, and there was beer. Those were the positives. I’m not going back anytime soon.

Cheap food, taste to match. Run away from the black pastrami. How can you screw up onion rings? Batter them with too much flour and undercook them so you bite into hot greasy flour. I’d be afraid to try anything else. There is nothing New York about this deli.

Stopped in this past summer for a small pizza, just to try it. My favorite is garlic, anchovy and salami. I was surprised to get nice whole roasted garlic cloves which I have never seen before on a pizza. But the pizza itself was way too thick for me, not Italian style at all, more like Greek even though they call it NY style.

Not much to say besides great pizza and amazing staff! They are quick but also attentive. Definitely see this as one of my new favorite pizza spots.

They gave my friend the wrong order and the girl working here gave us an attitude. However their pizza is really good…
I’m embarrassed to admit it, but during some busy weeks, Essex cooks for my family more than I do. Everything there is good — pizza, sandwiches, dinners. Two favorites are the tuna sub and the veggie pizza. It’s always fresh and always delicious. Their delivery is fast and accurate and I love that you can easily order online. It’s not fancy food or even hipster fare considering the downtown location. It’s just a good, solid, reliable place for lunch or dinner. The only thing I wish is that they stayed open a bit later.

I was between giving a 2 and 3 star. The food was overall pretty good for a quick service restaurant. They had homemade Mac n cheese which was really good. Decently priced menu for The most part. The real issue was the service. The RUDE young kid behind the counter was enough for everyone in our party to say never again to this restaurant. This was our second time coming here for a quick bite to eat while exploring the town, as we remembered the food was pretty good on a previous trip, but will not be back because the service was not good, and the rudeness was not appreciated.

Food was very good which is why I’m giving 3 stars. Between 3 people had grilled cheese with bacon(delish), curly fries, pizza, mac & cheese & chicken tenders. For curly fries and grilled cheese and a soda the total was $ 15. Pizza is very cheap at $ 2.50 a slice. Overall, not bad. The service on the other hand, was terrible. The snotty guy behind the counter was extremely rude. There were only 2 other customers in the restaurant(Tuesday evening around 6). The staff all seemed annoyed that they had to take our orders and yell out our numbers. Will not be returning even though the food wasn’t bad. Hire new staff !

Great food, Decent Atmosphere, very fast, and the flavors are all there. Perfect location in the scenic downtown walking mall of Salem. Only lost one star for quality of service. Staff seemed much too busy to help anyone besides people in line buying pizza. Waited 5 minutes to get a ketchup bottle(missing from the table). Certainly worth coming back if you like the type of pizza, but doesn’t quite compare to some other nearby pizza joints in my opinion.

We were there yesterday for lunch and we liked it so much that we went back for dinner. We had beef gyros, cheese pizza slices, cheeseburger + fries and the Reuben sandwich. The gyros were really great at $ 6. The beef was well-seasoned and didn’t have any problems(excess fat, bristle, etc) and they were generous with it. It could have used a little more tzatziki sauce. It’s the best beef gyro that we’ve had in the Greater Boston to NH area. The pizza slices were nice — relatively thin crust and cheese that was not excessively oily. I prefer Italian to Greek but there are far more Greek places in the area. NY-style is closer to Italian than Greek. The Reuban meat was very nice; pretty lean and no bristle. The cheeseburger was big; good quality meat. The french fries were very good too. We bought a bunch of things and shared bits and pieces so that everyone could try everything. They have a fairly big dining area though it was quiet when we were there outside of takeout orders. I guess that they have a lot of traffic during the later tourist season.

This place really hit the spot. My GF ordered the broccoli Calzone said it was the best she’d ever had. The broccoli was cooked perfectly. Not mushy and not try with the perfect amount of cheese. I had the 14″ pepperoni pizza and was completely satisfied with my selection. The staff were extremely friendly and quick. A definite must next time I’m in the area

Ordered a small cheese and fries and used a coupon for free wings! Everything was hot, delicious and fast(enough).I forgot to give the driver my free coupon and called to correct the mistake, and they told me don’t worry about it! The Free Wings were huge!!!

I decided to grab some food while wandering the Salem Place«mall» and my options were rather limited, so I decided to grab some pizza. The prices were pretty on point in my opinion($ 2.50 for plain cheese, $ 3 for pepperoni), It’s not pizza I would rave about, but if you’re looking for something cheap and quick in the area, it will do the job. Service was quick and polite as well.

My first bad review We order from Essex NY Pizza and Deli at least once a week and unfortunately today will be our last. We ordered onion rings and 2 subs at 3:09pm, we waited the usual 20 minutes for pick up and my son returned home with the food 10 minutes later. Opened the box of onion rings and it was literally a box of soggy mush. I sat and thought what a bummer, no big deal I will just return it. Walking in and seeing the place packed the day after Halloween, I am instantly excited for them to be busy. I walk up to the desk and am greeted by the always super friendly ladies and let them know I would like a refund. She calls to her boss«the rude red head» who offers to make me another batch, I decline and he automatically accuses me that the onion rings are old and they are not a recent item. The young lady agrees that my son had just picked up the order 20 minutes earlier and he rudely agrees to a refund. This is in front of six staff members, I just wanted my money back am I not entitled to be satisfied with the food I am paying you for? Embarrassed I just want to grab my $ 4.50 and go. He again with such a rude attitude yells again from behind the line «Um you placed this order at 3:09, that’s why they are like that» WAITWHAT? You are seriously defending a huge gross box of wet soggy onion rings? Hot or cold they were gross and I am shocked you would defend something of such poor quality. I honestly would have continued to order from here and recommend the deli(as I have done to at least 20 people since new ownership) but the man was rude, he just lost a great regular customer. Super disappointed!

I had to get a pizza by the slice because I placed an order at Fresh Taste of Asia, across the street, 45 minutes ago, and I still didn’t have my meal. I had to run. My mushroom slice was quick, tasted fresh, and had the perfect crust, golden brown, crunchy on the outside and chewy on the inside.

I visited here while in Salem a few days ago and had a small cheese pizza and an order of french fries. The food was amazing! The BEST fries I’ve ever had in my life! I really mean that and I’m a french fry person! The people I was with thought the same thing, we actually complimented them and asked for the recipe, which was not given haha. The pizza was really good. I have been talking about this place since I left. Def. will be back when I’m in the area again!

I guess I’ll start off by saying that this was probably one of the best pizzas I’ve ever had! All the ingredients were fresh and delicious. My husband also had the chili and it was amazing! So happy we came across this place while in Salem. Customer service was great as well. If you are ever out in Salem you have to visit this place!!!

This is a place to go if you are in a hurry for lunch or dinner. My boyfriend and I ordered three mushroom slices of pizza, a side salad and two drinks and it came to about $ 13. Pretty great deal for what you get. The slices of pizza were generous and were pretty solid taste wise. The salad was fresh and healthy. The drinks were the typical fountain type drinks. Overall, I think this place is pretty great if you’re looking for something cheap and fast. Cheers! :)
