I’m a local and I make sure I take all my guests in town to here! Great food and service. They have homemade onion rings that are some of the best I have ever had, other homemade meals on the menu including homemade desserts. The menu is classic American with several local German favorites that are excellent! Don’t miss this place!

Good ol country food. Great food, clean, staff is friendly, and priced right. Being native from Ste genevieve, I have to tell you that you have to try their onion rings, and one of our local fav’s and is liver dumplings.

My favorite local restaurant! Great down home cooking. Cold beer, hot food and hot servers! What more can you ask for? Known for onion rings and liver dumplings. Both are a must if you go!

Onion rings were awesome. Had fried chicken. It was great. Others with me had meat loaf and fried clams. They also had the coconut cream pie. Everything was good. We’d definitely go back there if ever in town again.

During our trip around Ste. Genevieve, a couple people had talked to us about the lovely meal they had at a local establishment called Anvil. Since we had no concrete plans for dinner, we decided to give this place a try and we are certainly glad that we did. We entered into a relaxed old-school ambiance with brick walls and old pictures of clowns(believe it or not, it really worked for this place). The servers were very nice and attentive, and the food was excellent. So much of what was on the menu sounded amazing, and the prices were outstanding. My girlfriend had the quarter chicken while I had chicken strips, german fries, and a salad. The chicken was outstanding and the sides were on point as well. They apparently fry their chicken right when ordered, which would not be surprising, because it certainly tasted excellent. They had a chocolate cake for dessert which was very rich and delicious. At checkout, we had a chance to talk to the manager who was very friendly and had a very fun personality. We loved our trip to Ste. Gen and will be back, and when we return, we’ll certainly dine here again.

Fried chicken for the win! I came here for dinner after a day of winery hopping so when I walked in I was hot, hungry, tired, dehydrated and cranky but I sure was happy by the time I walked out. The waitresses are all super sweet and since it was a Sunday we didn’t have to wait. I received a tip while doing shots at crown distillery to get the fried chicken and once that seed was planted it flourished under the steady stream of alcohol, my poor bf heard of nothing but fried chicken for the rest of the day(well and also sangria but that is for a different review). I hear the chicken is so good because it is not breaded and fried until one orders it, this process clearly works. With the dinner comes two sides and a roll, these aren’t really anything special but it does round out the meal so your not just sitting there gobbling chicken like a fool. Oh, and it was $ 8.50 for the meal, heck yeah! I dig the old time ambience and love the exposed brick. The owner was real nice and has a fun sense of humor, what’s not to love? Do yourself a favor and check this place out when in town, this review is written while 100% sober btw.

Great food, people, prices, service. Never thought I’d eat liver, growing up with a great southern cook for a mom, I never could eat her liver which others bragged about being so great, but wow!!! Worth the drive from du quoin il, everything we had was really good!!!

I was told this place is famous for their Bloody Marys, onion rings and liver dumplin’s. I tasted two out of three, sorry liver does not cross these lips. A group of 24 arrived, we had a reservation. We were upstairs, and we had three servers taking care of our two tables… WONDERFULSERVICE. The Bloody Mary was delightful, just the right amount of bloody and mary. We got the onions rings as an appetizer, trust me this is the way to eat them. We have two plates at our table and it was plenty. They also have a secret sauce on the table to accompany them. We were trying to dissects the sauce, we tasted horse radish, sour cream, garlic and a few other things. I had the mushroom burger and fries. It was heavenly, the crust on the burger was slightly charred(I love that on a burger). Mushrooms, sauce and cheese was found in every bite. It was just the right amount of messy. Fries were tasty.

Nice little place to stop into, has that old time charm. Good food and good prices. Would have liked to have tried a piece of homemade pie but was too full. Next time I will order dessert first! They also have a full bar. Very friendly people.

A great little restaurant in old town Ste. Genevieve. The food is very good and the service is great as well. The menu offers burgers and chicken tenders to grilled catfish and country fried steak. Highly recommend.

It’s been The Anvil since 1855, so they must be doing something right! A half order of onion rings can feed 4 people! Excellent fried pork chops and great catfish. Very cool bar and lots of historic photos of old town Ste Gen. Worth the stop, you will enjoy this place!

This place is the epitome of southern comfort food. It has been a staple in this town for decades and never disappoints. The service is always excellent. You’d be making a grave mistake to not try the onion rings here. The burgers are typically really good. Friday evening catfish specials are my favorite– perfectly cooked with multiple sides for an excellent price.

I don’t want to sound like a broken record, but if you come here for one thing, let it be the onion rings. They are that good. Just come and have some rings and beer and you will be happy. The rest of the food is just mediocre, and perhaps a little on the high side. On our most recent visit the service was absolutely horrid. Our waitress seemed highly annoyed to have to serve us. I will give this place the benefit of the doubt and hope that the wait staff is not always that bad.

Get the onion rings. It’s the key message of the day. They are amazing and a small order is plenty for two people. My steak, a rib eye, was a bit thin and gristly, but about what I expected for the price. My hubs tried the fried livers, which were really great, but needed some sort of sauce(we like hot sauce) for dipping. We also tried the«liver dumplings» a local specialty. Think spaetzle with a bit of ground liver mixed in, topped with mushroom gravy. It was not something I’d necessarily crave or want all the time, but it was a nice alternative to mashed potatoes or some other such starch. The décor is a bit bizarre with a mix of clown pictures and artwork by local artists. My husbands favorite was the painting of a gas meter. The building is ancient with exposed brick walls and an ornate old carved wood bar. The staff are friendly and service was prompt.

Being a local, the inside of this place takes me back to what 1930 Ste. Genevieve must have been like. The main course items are alright, but to get the full«Ste. Genevieve experience,» you gotta try the liver dumplings as a side or advertiser. They are better here than anywhere else in town.

This is a very old bar/grill in historical Ste Genevieve, across the street from the county courthouse in the town square. It’s got a great old time atmosphere, and yes, the onion rings are very good. The rest of the food is run of the mill bar food and is quite frankly overpriced. The Anvil definitely invokes a different era charm-wise, but in terms of food, there are better dining options in Ste Gen.

As soon as I saw that Jenny and Dave gave the Anvil positive remarks, I knew it was going to be an okay dinner spot while in Saint Gen. Talk about a seriously cool local spot! If you need to eat dinner after a day at the wineries, this is your place. Onion rings yes… All of the other Unilocalers are right on. They are so perfectly done and the seasoning is just flavorful enough! A small order is definitely enough for four people or less… A large is good for a big table. I definitely recommend sitting at the bar because Holiday is awesome! As far as the food goes, the French dip is pretty flavorless but I can vouch for the friend chicken. Ummm… Delicious. Yup. Trust. One thing I’ll never understand is the weird clown decorations in there. Clowns everywhere… What the hell? Otherwise, just look out for the strong drinks and you’ll be good to go! Such a cute spot with adorable servers and a hilarious owner.

I HAVE to be missing something here… I mean the onion rings were ok. not really flavorful but lightly breaded so good on that one. Food options looked like various options of fried which(as my Cousin Hugo’s review shows) I can enjoy… My main problem? Ste. G has TWO microbrews nearby(Crown Valley and the fabulous Charleville) but NEITHER on draft or in bottles?!? How is this possible? Throw a six pack of bottles behind the bar and see how they sell… I had a Blue Moon and Onion Rings then bailed for wine, cheese, and a spinach and strawberry salad on my patio! Boooo Anvil!
