Finishing my first month and I am a fan. I have studied Karate in the past and wanted to get back into shape. What I have appreciated about Sifu Adrian is his open-minded approach to working with me and my physical limitations. I currently have a minor ankle injury and he is always mindful to give me alternate ways to do the stances and steps in our work to protect the ankle and to strengthen it as it heals. Coming from a traditional dojo that expected us to count off in Japanese and learn drills and to perform katas every session, it was a change in gears to come to this school. The style is more relaxed, you will not have someone yelling in your face to work harder — if you need that, this will be a poor fit. What you do get is a teacher who has deep knowledge of the body and its mechanics, of martial arts and specifically Choy Li Fut Kung Fu, and a desire to help you progress without turning the practice space into some hyper-intense experience. But if you think that means it is soft or not challenging, that is the twist — follow the exercises and Sifu’s instructions and you will be sweating. Learn the moves and internalize the concepts and you will be able to defend yourself. And if you just want to learn beautiful katas(routines) — he can bring you there as well — but first, you better learn your stances, punches and kicks. p. s. we had a few kids in our sessions last week(they normally work out at an earlier session) and Sifu Adrian was patient with them, but also knows how to get their attention. Once again, he is not stern or over-bearing or intimidating. But he will challenge them to learn.
