Labor Day tastes like pickles to me. Every Labor Day, I find myself in St. Joe, Indiana, for a family reunion, and I always use the opportunity to stock up on pickles from Sechler’s. You can find Sechler’s pickles in lots of grocery stores around the country, but you get nowhere near the selection they have at the factory store in St. Joe, and the price is double in stores. Sechler’s makes a «no garlic» hamburger dill pickle that is amazing for someone like me who hates garlic. The past few years, I’ve bought a massive, gallon-sized jar of these for a pittance, and it’s lasted me the whole year. I also love the Tony Packo’s Pickles and Peppers mix, spicy, thick-cut dill pickles and banana peppers that are great for snacking. There’s an unlimited number of varieties here, encompassing just about every pickled vegetable you can imagine, and lots more. They also sell«mistakes» like pickles that are broken or too salty. I’ve never taken the factory tour, but it sounds intriguing from the other review here.

If you like factory tours, this is a great place. In the tour they take you around the grounds & you can see the vats of pickles that wouldn’t fit into a two car garage. When they are done soaking in the brine, they scoop em out w/big fishing nets, & they go down a conveyor belt where some of the hair netted ladies chop off the remaining stems, & through the wash to the canning process. The tour doesn’t take more than an hour, & at the end, they give you a free bottle of pickles or relish from a wide assortment. It’s like Mr. Rogers goes to the pickle factory.
