Always in search of good mexican food my wife and I tried out Toreros last week. It’s a little unsettling to see a large open restaurant with literally no one in it. Despite the place being empty the service was lacking considerably. We had to ask for more salsa, never got more chips, and had empty water glasses for most of the meal. Server was on a bluetooth earpiece and having a conversation while he took our order. In the middle of the order he noticed several police outside and just walked off to see what they were doing. He didn’t say a word, just walked away. Wife had arrachera which was tasty and tender. I had the molcajete which was ok, but not half as good as the one at Lalo’s or Sobares. It did have a ton of chicken, steak and shrimp in it though.

This is the old Taco Loco place, I guess. Though I’m not sure if the tacos at Toreros were loco, everything else certainly was. Seriously. Since friends thought that they had $ 1 tacos, we decided to try the new Mexican place. Turns out that the $ 1 tacos started after seven. Sooo, as the waiter came up to us, — «Hola, amigos!!» — we had to order the expensive stuff. The waiter was an Italian dude who felt like he had to have a Mexican flair because he worked at a Mexican restaurant. I wanted to tell him, «Just be yourself.» He was a bit of a weirdy. When he served me my drink, he always had it in front of my face. He wouldn’t set it down on the table. He’d stand there waiting for me to put down my drink(after a semi-long wait)… Weird. Once the food came(after a very long wait), he made me grab my plate and put it on the table in front of me. Just set it down, dude! The bathroom was… huge and bizarre. It had only one stall, but there was no door on the stall… The food was okay. It tasted like something an average person could cook at home. It wasn’t worth the price. The waiter said, «Was the food excellente? Adiós, amigos! See you tomorrow!» as we left. Stepping outside, we tried to read a sign outside, but… it was in a language that didn’t exist. We criticized it. Then the sign fell down. Weird day.

Have you ever walked out of restaruant and said WTF was that!!! Sorry but this place gets a big fat«NOPASS, NORETURN». The #1BF and I came home Sunday night from a long weekend and recruited some friends to hit our favorite carnitas place but alas it was still closed from the car running through the window.(Dang La Fiesta! Hurry up and reopen!!!) So we thought where to next? Let’s try Toreros! We got a parking space right in front and someone said uh-oh no one here! I thought they meant the place was closed but there was literally no one there! No patrons, no waitress, no bartender — it was wierd. We’re alwys willing to try a place once(maybe we were early, maybe it was a slow night, maybe this place hasn’t caught on yet…) so we waited at the front and a young woman came out from the back with menus. The décor is kind of cheap modern, the cushioned table top was kinda cool but the overall ambience was«trying and missed the boat» — particularly annoying were the seizure inducing flashing lights behind the bar — like a 70’s disco. While we were eating, absolutely no one came in from the outside — only what looked like the owner came out from the back and ended up slouching back in a banquette across from us and watching the baseball game on the television. I felt like we were in a David Lynch movie — CREEPY! We had the carnitas plate, the camarones diablo, a soft taco with carnitas and a marinated beef plate — nothing rated above a C-. Now on to the incredibly bad service. Even the #1BF who never comments on service said that the waitress was horrble! It was like she was afraid of us and we hardly saw her and she never asked how the food was or if there was anything else that we wanted. We had to ask for silverware and napkins, she was refilling huge water glasses when they were already full. We only ordered two drinks and she couldn’t remember who got the beer and who got the soda. Before we were even finished she stands the check book upright in the middle of the table — like she is trying to rush us out of there! Hello! There is no one in here!!! Awkward! Food — Bland, flat and colorless Ambience — Uncomfortable Service — The worst! Overall — Ooph! Only go if you like getting flogged wirh bad food and horrible service. Suggestions for improvement: Excellentl wait staff — #1 attribute to a good dining experince — they know what to recommend on the menu and to anticipate your needs so that everything feels like a finely choreographed dance. Decide if you are a sports bar or a restaurant. If this is a restarurant put the damn TVs on mute and play appropriate music. Make sure that the food is good. THEEND
