Shelly Starrett, MS MSHN RD

I’ve seen Shelly on and off for a couple years now. I started seeing her after an eating disorder since that is her specialty. And continued seeing her when for some reason my body would not stop packing on weight. She herself has PCOS and helped me discover I too had this. I later found out I had Lyme disease as well. Her style of nutrition is that of curing the body and letting it balance itself out. She also suggested I use progesterone cream for my hormones as she works with a chiropractor too. Unfortunately a lot of her practice is somewhat idealistic, assuming the body will heal itself. I’m sure it can theoretically but this was never the case with me, my metabolism is so slow I basically had to relapse back into my eating disorder to lose the 50 (yep fifty, very traumatizing) pounds I gained from how screwed my hormones are. I’m still having trouble losing the last ten.
Our sessions are always informative and I leave very hopeful, it’s just that a lot of what she says doesn’t work for me in practice. But I give four stars because I know my body is definitely the exception. Generally she recommends a moderate to low carb diet for PCOS, gluten free of course, and Stevia only for sweetener. I would continue seeing her but the idea that I can eat a normal amount of food and magically lose the rest of the weight doesn’t seem to work in my case. She has done a shit ton of schooling though so I recommend her to anyone who doesn’t have any major illnesses affecting their weight.
