Great food! Very nice owner. Authentic cuisine. Enchiladas verdes and mole were awesome!

DON’T EVEREATHERE!!! We arrived for a late lunch on a beautiful sunny Saturday. The place was practically empty which should have been a sign to leave ASAP. There was no silverware on the table and when we asked for some the response was, «The dishwasher is washing them.» Really!!! The place is empty and you don’t even have enough silverware for the 2 occupied tables in here??! The menu was very limited which should of been our next cue to leave but we wanted to give the place a chance. We ordered or food and it took FOREVER to come out. Why did it take so long if the place was empty!!! We waited and waited and finished our basket of chips with bad salsa and the waiter asked if we needed anything. My mom politely said, «Our food would be nice,» with a smile on her face. We were assured it would be out soon. In the meanwhile we asked for more chips and were told they ran out, the cook needs to make more… um ok? Our food FINALLY came out but not all at the same time. Im pregnant and was starving so I started my meal but my sister’s plate came out well after the rest of our party of four’s did. She was so upset she just asked for a box to go. The rice and beans had no flavor at all and the chicken mole was so so… my mom’s is better. By the time we finished our meals and went back outside to enjoy the beautiful day the sun had already gone down because we wasted so much time waiting for this blah food and awful service. We will NEVEREVER go back. Im sure this place wont last long.

When we walked into this place, we sat down and I said, «This is either going to be a diamond in the rough or awful», sadly, it was the latter. The 1st red flag was the place was EMPTY. Not a patron at the bar or dining. It was 6:30PM on a Friday night. There was clearly evidence of prior patrons, as there was an un-bussed table not too far from ours. I wonder now, how long had it been there? The waiter greets us, takes our drink order and brings back an inedible basket of chips. We’re polite and upbeat, we ask for a replacement basket, as our existing one tastes stale, our request is rebutted with«the chef made them wrong»…what?!? No time to make chips? No heat lamp available? Or??? Is this the old basket from last night’s sole patron’s table, the table that has remained un-bussed? I digress… red flag number 2 We’re checking out the menu and discussing what we’re going to order. We notice that our menus are different; some people have what we joking called«the kids» menu. Meson San Augustin has a very limited menu, burritos, tacos, and assorted variations on nachos/rancheros. The prices all appeared incredibly reasonable for an Old Sac restaurant — red flag number 3. This pitcher of margaritas arrives and you seriously couldn’t pack more ice into it. I laughed as everyone tried to drink their margaritas without getting ice up their noses — red flag 4. The food comes out and it’s OK. Food was edible, but far from good. Think frozen $ 1 burrito that you buy in the frozen food section from the grocery store or 7 – 11 quality. Not impressed, but we make the best of it and c’est la vie. The real kicker was the end, the delivery of the bill. I was absolutely floored that they charged over $ 33 for a single pitcher of margaritas with well tequila. We let the waiter know and he shrugged it off as too bad so sad. In hindsight, all the red flags, no patrons, reasonably priced, poor quality control, we should have walked before the food arrived. I will NEVER be back and I look forward to the new restaurant that will be moving in here once this one fails! Furthermore, the Unilocal reviews are either bogus, written by staff, or bar patrons who had midnight munchies, because this restaurant is, without a doubt, less than 3 stars on its best day, and in my opinion ½ a star, but that rating score isn’t available.

Okay… so he is my UPDATED/EDITED review. I’ve eaten here twice. First time was in late October and 2nd time around 2 months ago. The first time my family and I ate here, I enjoyed it. The place was EMPTY… I mean literally it was just my family, the waitress and a bartender at their bar area. The place looked humble like it was just opened and they were working on fixing it up and decorating it some more. My fiancé ordered chicken flautas and they tasted really good. They were on the plain side but I was really hungry that afternoon. The rice was also good and the beans were okay. Just the typical refied beans. The waitress was really friendly and she brought out plain paper and markers for my kids which I thought was very thoughtful. She mentioned it was her parents restaurant. All in all I liked that my toddler could be loud while we ate lunch and the food was good. The 2nd time we ate here I was VERY disappointed. The place was empty yet again(I figured they would have more business by now) it was my family and another family who waited quite some time to be able to pay the bill(the waiter was nowhere to be found). The décor was the same, I figured they would make it nicer since the 1st time we came in. I ordered the flautas again and they did not taste the same. No flavor, and they came with just sour cream this time, no guac, no pico, just sour cream and a side of rice ad beans. The rice was flavorless also, definitely not the favor I tasted the 1st time and the beans were whatevs. My 2 older kids ate this time(the 1st time they didn’t) and they ordered a chicken quesdilla with rice and beans and the portions were so small… I mean like for a toddler. My kids eat super healthy and I portion their food already and they were definitely not satisfied with their meal. It was such a small quesdilla. As far as service an older Mexican guy was our waiter and he seemed very unexperienced. He would disappear for long periods of times and he wasn’t all that friendly. He was awkward. My dad ordered the mole and he wasn’t enjoying it at all. My dad is Mexican and mole is his favorite dish and he ate the meal because he was hungry but he said it wasn’t good. So after giving this place two tries I will not be returning again. The menu barely has anything on it, they need to make the place more appealing, including the taste and presentation of the dishes and get more attentive waitresses.

Stumbled upon this place and gave it a try. I got the mole and it was excellent. Great meal for $ 9.45!

Excellent mom and pop restaurant. The Chile Verde had huge chunks of delicious pork and was full of wonderful flavours. The Mole Poblano was also excellent. Ingredients were fresh and flavourful. The owner’s wife was in the kitchen cooking up spectacular dishes.

We ordered this to go for a coworkers birthday and I had the flauta plate and it was so good. The flautas were fresh and tasty, as well as the rice and beans. Will definitely be coming back!

If you’re in Old Sac and craving mexican food, it’s best to jump in the car and head elsewhere. This is definitely not the spot to go for great food. We went in around 6p on a Saturday evening and were able to get seated right away as it was not busy at all(one table with a couple that had been served, another table with a couple that got seated shortly after us). Our water and chips/salsa arrived quickly and our order was taken very shortly after sitting. The first basket of chips was alright, but they were pretty stingy with the salsa. There was barely ¼c of salsa to enjoy. We asked for a second basket of chips and a much larger bowl of salsa. While we went through plenty of chips, it wasn’t because they were so tasty but because we had to wait 20 minutes for our food to arrive. There were two of us! Our order was not massive and I have no clue as to why it took so long. The couple sitting at the table directly next to us(there was plenty of room available, they could have spaced us out some) was also complaining about the long wait. The food was meh. I had the chili rellano, spouse had some tacos with a side of refried beans. He said the beans were quite tasty but I’m leaning on him just being so hungry that anything would suffice. The black beans tasted like they came right out of a can and topped with a few shreds of cheese before being stuck in the microwave for 30 seconds. For as long as the wait was, I was expecting something awesome. Unfortunately, that’s not what we got. Two stars only because I don’t want to be so awful and only give them 1. The waitress was nice and she can’t be faulted for the delay in us getting our food. She had hair past her waist that really should have been pulled back into a bun rather than a ponytail, so that was a bit unsanitary to me. There was a cute little set-up for a band to play so maybe the late evening would be better. I’m not going to take my chances and find out though.

We visited this place last week and the food was great. We had the chicken quesadillas and they were very delicious. This place is underground and gives it a very«meson» feel. Very cozy, and family friendly with a stage with live music and or kareoke on weekends. Large projector TV for watching sports and a full bar. This place is well priced and the staff are beyond friendly and hospitable!!!
