Food was good from the calamari to the entrees. Dark haired server in her 60’s was the most pretentious, condescending waitress I’ve ever encountered. She would be more at home slinging hash at the Buckhorn truck stop. Historic building makes for good ambiance, but very drafty. I’ll head to downtown Portsmouth for much better service and better food. $ 150 for dinner and drinks for two deserves so much more.

My boyfriend and I had an amazing experience here. The food was awesome as well as the staff. We got the penne and the island lady and both were equally as great. Brian was attending to us most of the night and was very attentive, friendly and funny. The setting by the fire place was beautiful and quite. Thanks for a great evening!

The atmosphere makes the place. Views of the surfers and a warm, cozy fireplace. It’s an old standby that you can rely on 365. I also like that you can get small plates of many entrees.

The staff is friendly… but not friendly enough to suggest eating upstairs where there is an ocean view. The food was(meh) just okay. We got ill after eating here. They are a Swedish family, but they make their own pasta(?) They serve rotating seafood specials starting at $ 32 a plate. The food is pricey… way over priced. The hostess is in the wrong line of work. The fresh baked bread and desserts look good. The restaurant is an actual house so it is hard to spot, hence a lot of ederly local patrons, or maybe keep driving lol. The Beach Plum is down the street.

Fantastic food, service, and atmosphere. Life long local resident, this is one the best the NH seacoast offers.

We ordered the Island Lady & Madras curry… yummy! No skimping on flavor, quality ingredients or presentation here. Howeverrrr… the atmosphere upstairs is just ok. Almost like eating in the loft of a barn. Could *at least* use new carpeting?!? Flowers. needs something. Yes I know… historic, historic. Service by Jane, however, was excellent.

Had dinner here 6÷23÷15. Service was good — friendly and quick. Atmosphere was OK — nothing special. We both ordered the Shrimp & Scallop Scampi($ 28) and split a Caesar salad as an appetizer. The entrée was excellent. 6 large scallops plus a load of good size shrimp over linguini in a pinot gris butter sauce. The Caesar salad($ 9) was a pathetic ripoff. It was the smallest salad of any kind I have ever seen anywhere. I’ve had $ 2.95 salads that would make this one look puny. Wine was pricey — $ 9 for a big glass with a splash of wine; cocktails were about the same. One big disappointment was the absence of a nice crusty roll(or any roll) to go with the pasta. Overall, the entrée was excellent, but the experience was too pricey. You can plan on dropping $ 100 here easily.

Food and service is always good. Tends to be a little pricey…

Four of us ate there last night. The guys had the seafood penne that had lobster, crab, scallops and shrimp in it. They had the large portion and were stuffed… and they’re big guys! The flavor was excellent! The girls had Haddock Piccata and it was very good. My friend would have liked more capers. We had the smaller portion and were sufficiently satisfied. We ordered the peach cobbler and while it was yummy we thought that it would be even better if the peaches had been cut up in smaller pieces and there was more crunchy topping.

Love this place! My boyfriend and I frequent it for both dinner and drinks and it’s beach-side, casual but nice, and delish! Highly recommend:)

I’ve seen a steady decline in this place over the years. I recently ordered the Madras Curry with lobster and sirloin. It was revolting. The sirloin was overcooked, dry, and flavorless. It was like chewing on rubber. The madras was so rich and heavy that it soaked up all of the rice and turned it into a pasty mess. I defy any human being with any respect for their health to attempt to finish this dish. I’ve had this dish several times in the past and it was not so bad. Many of the prices are listed as «market». The entrees are not small but be prepared to pay. There are still some dishes that are decent however they all seem to start with a stick of butter. The food is heavy and nauseatingly rich. No one at my table finished an entrée. Our server was quite the grump. She approached our table and recited the specials as if her dog just died moments earlier. Never a smile. No enthusiasm. And she was covered in crumbs from eating in the kitchen. Each time she reappeared at the table there was a different particle of food on her face. I was shocked that her manager nor any of the other servers cared to point this out. Although we’ve been to the Carriage House more than 10 times, we had not been there in the last 3 years. This was because of a prior service issue. The booths downstairs are exceptionally uncomfortable. You need to pull out the table to squeeze in. The tables themselves are less than 2 feet wide so you’re practically in the face of the person sitting across from you. Now that the Seacoast has so many other nice dining choices to choose from, I see no reason why we’d ever return.

We live down the street and have been talking about going here for a year. Well we finally made it here about 8 weeks ago. Since then we have been back five times! Everything we order is fantastic! They offer a menu with a wide variety that is moderately priced. One of the best restaurants on the seacoast!

Nice views. Lobster and scallops dish(island lady) was very good, however haddock piccata was dry and heavily breaded. Disappointed given price.

I can’t believe that I’m doing this, but it absolutely has to happen… WARNING! WARNING! WARNING! Pubes and dirty bar rags in food! My girlfriend received a side of crab cake with the long, dark pubic hair that she didn’t order. Waitress nearly bullshit us to death. It could not have been more obvious what the entity in question was. She rattled off three different excuses before settling on, «it’s definitely a strand of crystallized sugar.» Uh, ex-squeeze me? Baking powder? The girlfriend was none too please, and, honestly, we should’ve left at that very moment. After the crab cake fiasco I bit into my burger(entrée) only to pull out an even longer piece of linen. A thick piece of string, if you will. Four inches in length. At least it wasn’t a pube, right? RIGHT?! Well, if there’s one thing that may actually be worse than a pube. .. Forget that. There’s no worse offense than a pube in your food. They should be shut down for that alone. Health Inspector! No, no, no. It wasn’t a pube in the burger. The string, as the waitress so idiotically informed me, was from a bar rag. Yup. She made a precarious situation even worse. Did I mention that she’s a dullard? WARNING! WARNING! WARNING! Pubes and dirty bar rags in food! The following is her initial response to her detective work: «It’s not THAT gross. It’s just a piece of kitchen rag, like, you know, what they wipe down the counters with…» Are you fu*king kidding me? «It’s clean, though, I promise.» Mind you her credibility was already in the shitter after Pubegate. I didn’t know how to respond. I was dumbfounded. Motionless. I kid you not, I almost vomited. The waitress continued to defend the rag with painstaking loyalty while my girlfriend looked on in disgust and stopped eating her dinner immediately. You’d think that after all that they’d at least comp the meal, right? Wrong. She only took off the burger, which was also undercooked, by the way. Wait, no, scratch that. She took off the cheaper crab cakes instead. Honestly, after the Kraken pube and slime-ridden rag, I expected her to practically hand over the keys to her Ford POS. No such luck. Instead, I’m giving one of my former favorite restaurants 1 star. The last establishment that I fashioned with the lone star award promptly went out of business. I could care less if the Carriage House suffered the same fate. The waitress alone earned them that willful wish. WARNING! WARNING! WARNING! Pubes and dirty bar rags in food! Note: We used a certificate and the waitress, an older woman of New England blood with dark hair and an overall horrendous attitude, actually insisted on arguing that the certificate would not work because I ordered a burger(which the certificate does not cover). Bitch, you just served us pube and rag with a fuc*ing smile! You bullshit us to the bank! My favorite part of the night(sarcasm alert) was when the paper included a mandatory 10 dollar tip on the charge. I was stupid enough to leave an additional 4 bucks. So, on $ 40 tab, she received a whopping 35% all to herself. I suppose that’s my fault, though, I should’ve left right after my girlfriend’s tongue touched another man’s pubes. It’s a shame that I don’t live in NH anymore because I’d be picketing the hell out of their parking lot every night come 5PM. Rarely do I get pissed at a restaurant, but that waitress screw the pooch in epic style.

My group reserved the big table with a view of the water. I had a cup of chowder as my appetizer and for my meal I ate a grouper special. The food was absolutely delicious and our server was attentive. If I’m ever in the area again I will be sure to visit once more!

Awesome location, great atmosphere. Food was amazing. Great place for date night in the fall & winter when there is no beach crowds. Sit downstairs next to the fireplace with good ocean views.

This is one of our favorite ‘go to’ places on the NH Seacoast. We went last night, a windy and bitter cold NH winter night, because we knew that we would have a great meal in a cozy, comfortable atmosphere. The ‘bead board’ décor along with the roaring fireplace provided a great refuge from the cold night. We each had a ½ Caesar salad that was extremely fresh and tasty, hinting of anchovies but none could be seen, thank God, in the dressing. I had a ½ portion of excellent swordfish with a very good citrus-lemon sauce, accompanied by al dente(a little bit too much so, for my taste) vegetable medley and rice. There was plenty of food with the half-portion size. Why don’t more restaurants offer this option? My wife had the haddock piccata and she loved it, as well. The crowning glory of the meal was a chocolate brownie that contained chocolate and caramel chips, with a nice scoop of excellent vanilla-bean ice cream; all covered by chocolate and caramel drizzle. Our server recommended it and we were very happy that we ordered it to share — way too big for one! Another terrific meal at the Carriage House!

The Carriage House is right across the street from the ocean. We were greeted by a funny and friendly hostess. The waitress was efficient, knowledgeable and friendly. We had the Buffalo Shrimp app which I thought was delicious. Everyone was happy with their dinner — it was the last night of restaurant week. My chicken saltimbocca was so different than the usual saltimboca. We had a great time!
