An interesting experience. Much of the space is taken up with the owner’s private collection of Lugers and other WWII collectables. There are some good rifles and shotguns in the rear of the store, and racks filled with overpriced junk on a rack in the middle of this little shop. Around the store, on the floor, are bins of old ammunition at top prices. Behind the counter you’ll find a mixture of inexpensive pocket autos, old guns, and the owner, Griz, who dispenses some of the most outrageous BS you’ll ever hear in a gun shop. I’ve heard him go on about AKs, saying he spoke at length with Mikhail Kaliishnakov at the US distributor’s warehouse. Nice try, but Kalishnakov never worked for a US distributor and didn’t speak English. The last time I was there he was explaining that the ammunition shortage was due to the government buying up all the ammunition made and shipping it overseas. The younger guys who work there are pretty reasonable, and I’m told that Griz is in the process of selling the business to his son in law, so perhaps things will improve. If you’re in the neighborhood it’s worth a visit just to see the old collectables, but generally I purchase my ammunition and supplies elsewhere. Update: The last half dozen times I’ve driven by the store has been closed and locked up. Are they still in business? No idea.

Decent gun shop, conveniently located about 2 minutes from 696 in Royal Oak. They will act as the receiving point if you order guns from . They have an extensive collection of Lugers, and usually bring out military surplus to the gun shows. Their Taurus line up is often extensive. However, if you’re looking for new HK’s or more elitist brands, they’re not often in stock at this location or in very limited availability. They are more than willing to order them, but be prepared for an unpleasant surprise at the quoted price. Though they’re one of my favorites to browse at gun shows, I rarely go to their store 1.) because they never seem to be open after work when I’m able to go and 2.) some of their store employees suffer from the same machismo that turns me off from dealing with gun enthusiasts. Call ahead to make sure they’re open, and go in knowing exactly what you’re looking for.

Midwest in my opinion is the best of the best when it comes to local gun shops. These guys are honest, friendly, and most importantly fair. I’ve made several purchases and trades with them over the past few years and they have been nothing but a joy to deal with. They’ll go out of their way to order you something that you want and do their best to give you the best price. The used rifle selection is amazing at most times. Obviously sometimes things sell out rapidly and they need time to stock up but most of the time there is a fantastic variety. They also sell some vintage collectible pistols and war time armaments which would be great for a collector. Occasionally they have bulk Romanian or Czech mil surplus 7.62×39 at a better price than you would find anywhere else. I’ve seen 1000 rounds for $ 80 in there before. I remember when my wife first got into shooting I took her in here and we looked around and after speaking with the lady working in there my wife decided she wanted to get this sweet Sigma 9 mm. It was around $ 50 cheaper than the big name stores like Gander Mtn or Cabela’s and she was very pleased. I know that some of you aren’t exactly the firearm enthusiasts that I am, but I wrote this review for people who are looking for a honest and fair local family owned gun shop and haven’t had any luck. You’ll be very happy with Midwest in Royal Oak. 5 Stars.
