My guilty pleasure. The square pizza is to die for. No better hangover cure! The flavors are unmatched by anywhere else in the area.

I know it’s a staple for the area but this is some of the most flavorless and boring pizza I have ever had. I guess it’s fitting for the people in these parts.

I usually love this place, since childhood, but I just ordered a pizza tonight with 5 toppings. You’d think tomato sauce would be a given on a «pizza» right? You shouldn’t have to order sauce as an extra topping right? Wrong. One of my favorite flavors of the pizza, one of the most fundamental 101s of pizza making, was missing. No sauce! Wtf?! Guess I need to start specifying the sauce. Huge bummer because I love buddy’s sauce but dang, delicious cheese bread I guess.(They are also closed otherwise I would just call and not make this public but this is just silly after spending $ 30 and traveling to get it).

I am a New York pizza girl by heart. I grew up eating thin crust pizza and never cared for a thick crust. But, Buddy’s converted me. I have only tried the cheese pizza and it is so good. You get the chewiness of the dough with the saltiness of the cheese(which is a generous serving) and a tangy tomato sauce on top. Let’s not forget my favorite part: the crunchy cheese bits on the sides. My only gripe is that it puts me in a food coma afterwards. But, it will send you to carb heaven. It is takeout only so call ahead!

As always, Buddies is the King of pizza! The crust is one of a kind. Thanks Buddies for being so consistently great after so many years!

Best tasting Detroit style square pizza. Note, this is only a carry out location and there is no seating.

Buddy’s pizza sure has gone down hill over the past year. Last summer I had a good pizza, the Super, that lived up to the Buddy’s legend. Six months ago they created a sub-par pizza but I wrote that one off. Today’s 8 square Super from the Royal Oak takeout location was hardly worth one star. The colorful pizza you see in the Buddy’s website was instead a bland whiteish-yellow with a few slices a green peppers and some pepperoni and mushrooms visible, but not very many. There was barely any sauce on the pizza. No sauce at all under the cheese, and at most a few drizzles of sauce in the middle of each slice. Frankly I have never received a pizza with this little sauce. The crust along the side had barely any evidence of that crunchy, carmelized golden brown goodness that is expected. Instead it was pretty much the color of the cheese with barely any evidence of cooking in those pizza pans. The crust on the bottom showed also showed little evidence of going through the oven. Upon eating, it was soggy and gummy. After sitting on my kitchen counter for a few minutes the bottom of the cardboard box the pizza came in was soaking wet. Maybe this location rushes pizzas out of the oven. I don’t know, but I do know I will not waste another twenty bucks on a pizza. At least the antipasto salad was good…

Pizza was above the norm, I walked in and was amazed a the lack of customer service, the young man could not even say thanks. Too bad I have memories of this place.

I usually go to another pizza place close to home but I now realize I have been eating subpar pie. It’s the sauce I think. It’s not overly sweet but taste just the same. The amount of meat in the meat deluxe is perfect. You aren’t overwhelmed by topping but really taste pizza throughout ever bite. The crust is crunchy. Only get deep dish. It’s great. I will use this place as a treat or I’ll be 300 lbs real quick.

I got some takeout pizza one evening after work while having a pizza craving. Normally I’m a Jets deep dish kind of girl but I didn’t feel like waiting for delivery. How wrong I was! I should have waited for Jets, the pizza from Buddy’s was absolutely gross. Io t a 4 square Detroiter and it was soggy and flavorless. I also hate chunks of tomatoes on my pizza and their sauce is chunky, so not a fan.

Pizza was salty. Lettuce in salad was brown. And the little ceasars breadsticks are way better. Save your money and go to jets. I love the one on northwestern highway, but I won’t come back to this one.

Absolutely love this place. Great memories of my father bringing me and my siblings to buddy’s for our birthdays. Great tasting pizza, my personal favorite is the fajita pizza. One of the best pizza places here.

We thought the pizza as a whole to be mediocre at best. We ordered the two topping special with a salad. Well, we thought we ordered two toppings but there were so few bits and pieces of the toppings we ordered that not all the very poorly slices, which had few sauce or cheese coverage had anything on them. Salad was fine if you love iceberg lettuce. We had high hopes due to articles and yahoo pizza list but once again I have been duped. Shame on me.

This was my first time doing takeout from Buddy’s, my parents and I usually go to the Farmington Hills location. I have no pictures of this pizza for you because my boyfriend and I scarfed it down pretty fast :) and the rest I took to work for lunch the next day. My parents were awesome and each picked up a Customer Appreciation card that Buddy’s gave out a few months ago, meaning we get a large deep dish pizza each month for $ 6.90(cheese only, add 75c or so for more toppings). I squandered my July coupon, unfortunately, so I was wanting to use my August one. The Lahser/Maple and Woodward locations are about equidistant from me, but with the crazy Big Beaver Rd. construction going on right now I opted for this location. They quoted me about 20 minutes for my order(large deep dish pizza — 8 slices — with half mushroom and half pepperoni). Their parking lot is similar to others on Woodward in that it’s extremely narrow, and I had to squeeze past a truck to get in to the lot. Buddy’s has never been my favorite deep dish in the area(I prefer Shields) but their pizza was good. I am a mushroom pizza gal(that’s my favorite kind) but for some reason, I like Buddy’s pepperoni pizza better than their mushroom — I think they use some sort of spicy pepperoni, and they bury it underneath the cheese, and it’s very good. In the future I might just get a pepperoni deep dish from them and nix the mushrooms, I think. I’d recommend this location if you are in the area, the pizza was yummy and the staff was friendly. They do take-out only, I’m not sure if they deliver.

Take out only! My boyfriend read some article that this is Detroit Style pizza so we wanted to try it out. Their pizza are square shaped! We ordered the thin crust Detroiter. It was pretty tasty. I liked it. It was a bit greasy and I am not sure if I would come here again. I prefer not to eat pizza since it is so unhealthy but if I happen to be eating pizza it would be Buddy’s.

Oh Buddy’s. I really wanted to like you, I swear I did. I remembered my Buddy’s pizza dinners from my childhood and how good they were. Sadly, things are much different now. GREASY! Holy hell, it took 9 super absorbent paper towels to blot the grease off this puppy.(Just a regular ol’ pepperoni pizza.) They don’t use mozzarella either and whatever crumbly, tart, Franken-cheese they use is for the birds. Mozzarella melts so much better and tastes better plus it’s authentic Italian! The sauce & crust are fine but the greasy quasi-cheese ruined it for me. Won’t be eating Buddy’s ever again.

Great pizzas — I like that the one on Woodward is pick-up only — makes it a fun occasional treat. The costs are too high though…

Outrageous! Now I know why so many residents of the Detroit Metro are fat as hell — it is Buddy’s fault. This local pizza chain makes pizza so tasty that one does not stop when satiated, but rather continues consuming mass quantities of soul satisfying doughy carbohydrates and cheesy fat well past the point of what would be considered civilized. One MUST like deep dish pizza to really appreciate Buddy’s; if you don’t then stop reading this review now and go eat your thin, dusty, cracker crust. This is no ordinary deep dish pizza; this is Detroit style pizza at its finest. I never experienced Detroit style before Buddy’s and if you haven’t then you absolutely must. First the shape: Buddy’s pizza is a generous square and is cut into 4 very generous slices. The dough is stretched into a deep square shaped pan which allows it to hug the sides. The result is a deep container which supports all the goodness which is still to come. The taste of the crust is reminiscent of the best homemade Italian bread with just the right amount of crispiness along the bottom and the sides. Next, a preposterous amount of cheese is added along with multiple layers of toppings, and then finally the sauce on top. The result? A whole lot of remarkable! The cheese and the crust combine during the baking of the pizza to make for a crispy, cheesy, palate pleaser which must be experienced to be believed. The pizza toppings of the meat deluxe pizza are so plentiful that one wonders if all the pigs and cows in the world were slaughtered for your one pie. The sauce doesn’t have too much acid and it perfectly blends with all the other ingredients to make for a sublime combination. One might be tempted to get an 8 square, don’t do it. Get the 4 square in order to experience the absurdly tasty edges from the corners — trust me you will not be disappointed. I can’t wait to get back to Buddy’s on my next visit to Detroit… surely I will be waddling over.
