Shades Color Bar & Hair Salon

I won’t be coming back here. I’ve had two stylist of mine that did amazing hair who have been let go by management at Shades. I’m afraid that if I come back for a third stylist, that one will be let go too.

I found Shades through the reviews here at Unilocal… I was looking for a new salon after a not-​so-​great experience with another one. I had a picture of what I wanted (cut and color) and knew it would be a huge job. Lindsey was awesome, she took her time and made sure I was completely satisfied. She even split it into two appointments (which I was happy to do) so that we weren’t rushed. In the end, I am in love with my hair — and it was a drastic change involving a huge amount of work. Everyone at Shades was friendly, helpful, courteous and I felt extremely satisfied with my overall experience. They have a new client for life!

Once again, Taylor @ Shades did a great job! My color has never looked better and I like her strategy of how and when to cut my hair. I get compliments all the time. This morning I also saw a very happy customer of stylist Shelley. What a great place.

The only reason I am giving 2 stars is because I think the staff is lovely, even my stylist I found to be super nice. Unfortunately, what happened with my hair warrants a one on my scale. Mind you, I have had my hair done lots of times at Crushed VLVT in Rocklin, but when my hairstylist retired, I was looking for someone else. I gave Shades a try cause I saw so many good reviews. Maybe it was my stylists off day, but after a week of showers and some of my toner washing out, I was faced with severe blottiness is my balayage/​ombré touch up. I had many areas were it went from light to dark, back to light within the same hair shaft (see pictures). I got my hair done a week prior for a trip to see friends, and because of how badly it came out, I was forced to go to Sally’s and just dye all my hair dark to correct what was done with my hair in preparation to fly out in less than a week from when I got it done. I refuse to get on a plane, to see friends I haven’t seen in years with this hair. I just don’t know what happened with this. I am disappointed as I even tipped my stylist $ 30+ dollars (I think all service providers should be tipped well) for 130 dollars worth of hair services and elixir. I am disappointed to say the least.

I’ve been there a few times and really like Elaine. Problem is she’s never available. I had another hairdresser twice when Elaine wasn’t available and like the other reviewers, I felt she was fairly new and wasn’t really getting what I was after.
But my big complaint is the Receptionist (s) who answers the phone. Every time I call she is so short and rude. She has an attitude of superiority and as if she’s generally disgusted with people. Immature and no interest in helping — at all. I know it’s not just one girl on a bad day because whoever is answering the phone is like this every time I call. I’m glad to see the Manager reads these because I think he/​she needs to know how snotty their people giving first impressions are.

Elaine is so amazing! I was super nervous about cutting my hair but she was so helpful and amazing. In and out and I’m so happy with my hair cut. Definitely coming back and referring everyone. They’re so nice and welcoming. Goody bags for new customers! Love them!!!

Ashara has been my hairdresser for about a year now. I came to Shades looking for a great hairdresser that kept up with modern ideas and cuts. Ashara has literally transformed my hair from boring and over bleached to Amazing! I’ve been growing it out for over a year and with Shades products my hair is strong, thick and healthy. I’m 48 and didn’t think I’d have long, beautiful hair at this stage in my life. Ashara helped me get there! I use the products she tells me too and they work like they should. I’m so glad I found her!

My girlfriend always looks super hot after leaving this year place :) Pretty affordable too. I just go to Beach Hut Deli for a beer while she gets a cut.

I decided at the lady minute to get my hair cut while my daughter was getting her hair done here. Ashley did a great job! Must stylists get nervous when I say I want to go shorter or asymmetrical. Ashley was excited and did a phenomenal job. I went from feeling like a boring ‘growing out’ bob, to a beautiful and hip cut. Thanks!

So impressed! Been going to Shades for a few months now. Taylor is amazing! When I first called I expressed how reluctant I was to trying a new salon and stylist, as I have thick hair that is really hard to cut. The reception assured me that Taylor would be a good fit. She was definitely right! She has so much knowledge and was able to cut my hair exactly how I wanted it. Highly recommend. The staff are so great!

Their best stylist and colorist, Matt, moved back to Hoshall’s Salon & Spa in Folsom. Shades has been fine, but I’m following Matt to Folsom and am excited to be able to get some other services there too!

Garretson did a cut and highlight for me and I loved how it turned out! He was really nice and it was obvious he really knew what he was doing!

I have been to this place before and it is pretty hit and miss. I’ve had some good haircuts but today’s experience was really bad.
Firstly the hairdresser took two seconds to wash and condition my hair — never really touching my scalp. Then he started to cut my hair without asking how I part it. When I mentioned it he blew me off. What I asked for was a layered cut. So I just washed my hair and barely notice the layers. Not happy at all with this cut.

I’m not one to do reviews or get my hair cut so this is a first! I found Shades on Unilocal and thought I’d give it a try. I called and was able to get an appointment the same day which was great with my busy schedule! The staff were all super friendly and I got my hair cut by Ashara. I cut off nearly 16 inches and she made me feel comfortable the whole time while I watched my hair fall to the floor. She was so sweet and friendly the whole time.
Like I said, I’m not one to get my hair cut frequently but this shop has changed my mind. I would recommend them to everyone. Plus prices were totally reasonable and affordable. If people want to be cheap go to super cuts down the street, you definitely get what you pay for here!

Not happy with service

I got a beautiful haircut here by Garretson today! He was so nice and the haircut turned out better than I thought it would look.

I have been to Shades twice and both times it wasn’t a very good experience.
The first time I went in was a few years ago and it was for a highlight. I am not sure what the stylist did but the blonde came out with a purple shade. It took her, 2 other stylists and 4 hours to fix it.
I decided to give them a shot again recently simply for a blow out because my normal stylist is in Folsom and I just wanted a quick wash and blow dry. I mean you can’t really screw that up, can you? After the stylist washed my hair, she asked how I wanted it styled and when I said curled, she said she would just blow it out curly. I have stick straight hair and I explained she would need to curl it with a curling iron. She tried in vain to make it curly while blow drying it and then said“oh I guess I will need to curl it with a curling iron.” She also hit me in the face with the brush AND dropped the brush on the floor and kept using it. Maybe I am a germ-​a-​phobe but my normal hairstylist is very cleanly and would have never continued without cleaning her brush or using a new one.
There is just a general feeling about this place that the stylists are fresh out of school and could use additional training. I probably wouldn’t return to them again.

How a trim turned into 6 inches…
When I called to make the appointment I asked for someone who was good with long hair, as my hair was past my navel and I wanted to keep the length. The receptionist assured me she had me with someone good.
I told the stylist I wanted an inch and a half off to rid the dead ends with face framing and layers to add body. I even showed him a visual saying that when I pull my hair to the front I want it to reach past my bra line (3 inches shorter that my hair) and stressed that I loved my long hair. He quickly cut my hair and when I pulled it forward I noticed he had cut three inches past what my shortest would be with a total of six inches of the right and five off the left. I am devastated. It’s short, uneven and the layers look horrible. I will not be returning. I wanted out of his chair as soon as possible.

I have been on HUNT for a regular person since my last was just so-​so. Had gone to 4 diff people so far. I went about a year ago from a Unilocal deal for cut/​color and you get a choice of what «level» stylist you wanted based on experience and skill which was also priced higher. Of course I wanted the «Master» because I was willing to pay extra for it. I was not real happy with, who I will call S because while she asked lots of questions, did not do what I asked. She even asked how I liked it and I told her it was not the right color and it was TOO red. I wanted burgundy highlights. And i wanted more noticeable layers. She ignored my comment and shooed me to the counter to pay. My hair was not hideous or anything, just not what I paid for and she was not cheap.
I waited another 6 months to go back to Shades because I do like their a la carte pricing and close to home. This time i called and made a random appt and decided to roll the dice on who I got. I got Ashley. She asked what I wanted and got it done! My hair also came out too Red but did not even need to ask me before she put more burgundy in. She just knew that was not the color I wanted. The Hair cut was the same. She trimmed less to be sure first and asked if i wanted more off. She did a beautiful job and made sure I was happy before I left.
I thought she must cost a fortune and to my amazement, she was probably on the lower end in comparison to S. As a result, I just tipped her the difference because she was worth every penny.
I just saw her a few weeks ago and again she did a great job that I was thrilled with. She is now my go-​to girl and will be my regular stylist.

I have yet to find a great hairstylist since moving to the Roseville area a few years ago. Back in the day I used to go to Toni & Guy but now that it is no longer, I have been searching for a new «place» ever since. This is how I came to find Shades after seeing a killer review from the lovely Tricia M!
I had Danielle as my stylist, and was happy to see that I loved her style and haircut so had high hopes for my new cut as well! She introduced herself, and took me back to her chair where she quickly washed my hair and started to cut.
Now I don’t have too much time to get my hair cut very often so I was ecstatic to FINALLY get some length trimmed off (almost 6″) and have some layers added. Danielle listen to everything that I had to say, and knew exactly what I wanted. It scared me how it only took her 10 minutes max to cut my hair, but it was totally what I was picturing in my mind! Yay!
I also love their pricing here where I don’t have to pay for blow drying, extra styling or anything that I don’t want unless I ask for it. I pre-​booked my next appointment for two months out so I can keep up on my new cut and saved $ 2 by doing that!
I will definitely be back here, and I’m glad it didn’t take me all day to get my hair cut like it usually does (which is probably why I never go!). Danielle is also highly recommended! Pictures coming soon.
