I love Poe’s Pub. I’ve driven past here a million times and I always thought it was some gross hole in the wall pub that catered to bikers. It turns out that they have a bike night(I think?), and it must just be a coincidence that I always drive past it that night. When I moved next door, I decided to look it up online and was surprised to see such amazing reviews. My husband and I went one night for dinner — he got the wings and I got the ribs. He said they were some of the best wings he’s ever had, and the ribs were delicious. Drinks are pretty cheap, and the staff is friendly. I’ve been a few times since, and they always make me feel like family. I highly recommend going! Also, I looked online for weeks for a menu and couldn’t find one, so i’m posting pictures of their to-go menu!

Great find! Took a relative to VCU Medical Center and had time for lunch … felt very lucky to find this neighborhood spot! I ordered the Poe’s Club ~ Smoked turkey, ham, bacon, cheddar, swiss, lettuce & tomato on a chargrilled Ciabatta bun! One of the very best sandwiches I’ve had! The grilled bun added a depth of flavor that was delicious and unexpected! An accompanying side of skinny fries and a dill pickle were perfect! Bobby ordered the meatloaf with mashers and asparagus which he said were great! The meatloaf had a light and beefy demiglaze gravy! Our server was Daria who was very sweet and VERY efficient! Loved out lunch experience today!

Good food, good drinks and good service… it’s a place where you can take the kids to eat in the day and go back in the evening for some drinks… always service with a smile

Remember the neighbor bar your dad hung out at. The kind where when your mom would show up and the crowd would be happy to see her too. Where the blues from the little speakers would fill the cracks between the laughs and the high fives. I made to the bar and ordered the special. The Wednesday meat loaf covered with the mash potatoes, asparagus and French loaf. $ 10. If the soul need a little cold beer and some quality food, not your dad’s bar food, give Poe’s shot. And tell Dan«hi» from me.

A very nice place to go for a quick bite and socializing with friends. Been going for a few years and each time there are no problems.

Poes is my new favorite brunch place in town. I hesitate to write this review because I feel it’s my undiscovered brunch secret and I enjoy the comfortable atmosphere where I never have to wait to get a seat when I’m starving on a Sunday. Don’t let the casual ambience fool you because the food is just as yummy as the famous brunch restaurant that is a block away where you usually have to wait well over an hour. Not at Poes! Im always greeted right away and promptly seated and I always order a man-mimosa which is a regular mimosa with a shot of vodka! What a way to get me started on a Sunday!

Best example of Richmond in transition. Class, race and all the tags are moot here. Including transportation– bmws trucks bikes old school pedestrians. Hell the mens bathrooms substantiates your record collection after all this time. Music: Blowback to non disco 70’s music and its stops there. Mid atlantic tilt meets southern deep twang. Food — regular pub: Drinks — its the creeping Poe touch. Porch smoking.

Poes gets five stars because it is a five star pub. It is exactly what you want in a classic old pub, and then some. I’ve lived in Richmond 25 years and have been to Poes for music and drinks at night but never food. Today, a rainy Friday I left the office early and went to Poes for a beer and grub. The folks around me at the bar were loving and complimenting the bartender on their food… burgers I believe. I chose the corned beef and cabbage rolls app. Holy smokes. Picture big fat Chinese egg rolls, only stuffed with tender corned beef, properly cooked cabbage, some soft potato and carrots. I would call it an Irish Egg Roll. I devoured it fast. My wife needed to share in this yummy-ness so I got another order to-go with another bigger-than-a-pint beer. When I got home she was just as impressed at the food as I was. Bartender was friendly and attentive… basically everything is what you want in a pub. Classic old haunt. Love it.

Been going to Poes since the day it opened. Always welcomed. Food always consistent. My 11 year old absolutely loves the meatloaf. We’ve watched bands, watched VCU Games and taught our kids how to throw darts in here. It’s the kind of neighborhood pub where everyone knows your name and you always feel welcomed.

This place was really delicious. We went at 9pm on a Friday and it wasn’t that busy. The Fried catfish with mango sauce was veryyyy good and the pulled pork BBQ sandwich was on point. Our server Janelle was very attentive and nice. Would def go again.

Smarmy/obnoxious, short male bartender with a mustache on my visit caused us to leave and go elsewhere. Food is mediocre and it’s small and tight.

You know, I’ve lived across the street from this place for almost 7 months now, but until last night, I had only attempted to go once. The first was Halloween night, after we had hosted a party at my place. After the party(when we ran out of alcohol, I know, awful planning), we decided to go over to Poe’s. Upon arriving we found out there was a cover charge, and the roughly $ 20 of us weren’t all going to pay a cover. The door man did offer to try and make a deal($ 60 – 70 for all of us), but we decided not to pay. Someone who I can only assume was a manager rushed out, and begged us to come back, asking if maybe a few of us would be willing to pay the cover. Needless to say, we left, got some beers from the gas station, and moved on. Last night though changed my opinion. We went around 8:00 after dinner with some friends. To our surprise, it was open mic night! There was no cover(how do they decide when to have a cover charge, is it random?), and the 7 of us crowded around one 4 person table. Service was okay, but at some points you did need to go to the bar to get a drink — no biggie. The people were nice. A great mix of the Richmond crowd was in there. No matter who you are, you can fit in at Poe’s. I didn’t eat, but the food looked like the building. A little run down on the outside, but good once you tasted it. Anyway, I’d say this place is pretty A-OK.

I was doing some urban hiking in Richmond and stumbled onto this place at the base of Libby Hill Park. The building is cool looking, almost like a demented fairy tale cottage. They have indoor and outdoor seating, bar seating, and a dining room with a small stage. It is a sports bar type place so if a Washington team is playing or a major sporting event is on, expect a crowd of enthusiastic fans. They do have bands in the dining room from time to time, haven’t stayed to see one yet so can’t rate the acoustics etc. The burgers and ribs are reputed to be good from the other reviewers. I tried the seafood stew(they called it something fancier but I can’t remember what) the night I was there. This is a special so it isn’t always on the menu. It was exactly what I needed on a damp, cold night. It had fish, scallops, mussels, peppers, and bread in it. Filling and warming. I also tried the fried calamari as an appetizer. Not greasy and a generous portion. They feature homemade pies for desserts. Sadly they had run out of coconut cream and the chocolate peanut butter pie varieties by the time I got there. They had pumpkin pie but I’m not a pumpkin eater so I will come back another time to try the coconut. I consider them running out a good sign actually, they actually are made in small batches rather than a ton of them being stored in a freezer somewhere. Staff was helpful and attentive. Also super apologetic for running out of some of the aforementioned pies. Parking can be a bit cramped, you may need to park down the street and walk to the pub. Give it a try. Then walk up the hill to Libby Hill Park and take in the view.

Awesome pub. They have a sense of humor, as you’ll see from the décor, a decent beer selection(as long as there are 3 – 4 that I like, I’m happy), and very friendly staff and customers. While exploring Church Hill on bike for the first time, I hit it off immediately with this older dude at the bar and ended up chatting for some time and meeting some of the other regulars – all nice folks. The wait staff was attentive, and the Continental burger was great. Good fries, good atmosphere, and football playing on the TV’s. I will definitely come again. Also, their hours are reasonable, unlike other restaurants in Church Hill, which were closed at 3:00(lame).

Let’s be honest. I have been going to Poe’s for the entire 10+ years I’ve lived up on the Hill. I haven’t wanted to review it because I don’t want to lose the ability to waltz in and grab a table at any time. I realize that I am doing y’all a disservice by keeping this little gem to myself, so — here goes! 1st of all, I will say I miss the booths along the far wall facing the stage. The place does feel more open and less dark and divey with the change, but I still like a good booth. I feel like I have probably eaten the entire menu during our years here. Brunch, lunch, and dinner, I’ve been here. The burgers are always a great deal. Cooked to order and delicious. And don’t forget those Raven Fries! Dusted with the right amount of spice that makes ketchup unnecessary. Don’t miss the catfish! I find it almost impossible NOT to order the catfish sandwich with remoulade sauce.(Pro tip — if you order the catfish bites app — and you should — ask for a side of the remoulade sauce with it. You can thank me later). The catfish is breaded perfectly and fried without being greasy. I order the sandwich vs. the dinner because, Raven Fries. On the times that I can successfully resist the catfish, I usually end up with meatloaf. I love a good meatloaf since it reminds me of my childhood. Poe’s has a great texture and awesome gravy. When It’s cold and nasty out, sometimes a steaming plate of meatloaf is just what you need. And for not being the biggest potato fan, I seem to always finish the mash(it’s totally the gravy). For you drinkers out there, Poe’s has broadened both the can/bottle and tap menus over the years. You can always get your bottle of Legend Brown, but check out the taps before you order.

My favorite pub. I used to live up the hill by the park and loved strolling down to the pub. This place is fun and always friendly. Never uncomfortable, and I can even bring my daughters down for a burger, or just drink a beer with my husband. The waitresses always have a joke or other cheery thing to say. All in all, just a great, relaxed, fun and welcoming neighborhood pub.

Although I have had dinner food that I enjoy at Poe’s, this was my first lunch here. I had the $ 10 crab sandwich. The crab was def. not fresh and it had no recognizable bigger crab pieces. I guess there are some tiny bits of crab that don’t have much taste and it tasted like it had been made from that. Tasteless and unappetizing. The sauce that came with it was good. They would be better off removing this item from their menu, if they can’t do better. Service was excellent.

The boo thang and I decided to take a quick detour to Millie’s in Richmond on our way home from Busch Gardens. Unfortunately, upon arriving at Millie’s at 12pm on a Sunday afternoon — the line seemed all too familiar to that of the rollercoaster lines at BG. I expect that it was about an hour wait just to get seated, judging by the amount of people hanging around outside the establishment. Therefore, we drove about two blocks up the street and stumbled upon Poe’s Pub. It was a gloomy day out, so the area wasn’t really inviting and the exterior for Poe’s was a little on the rugged side as well. Me being me though — I don’t typically judge a book by its cover, and usually like to try out the small businesses that look tarnished. Seems to me that these tarnished establishments always turn out to be the hidden gems. Walked in to Poe’s and BOOM — was hit with music. There was jazz music by a live band on a Sunday morning?! That’s pretty rad right? And I’m not even a fan of jazz! I ordered the french toast, which came with Poe’s homemade whipped cream, strawberries and blueberries. It was just the right amount of sweet; 3 slices of thick sourdough bread and(2) sausage patties. My guy settled on the ham/cheese omelet, which he absolutely raved over for being piping hot and well seasoned. The flavorful food, the prices, the service and the entertainment were spot on for a Sunday Brunch. Thanks Poe’s for a great detour experience!
