Good place for dining outside.
I loved the place because they put a water jag outside.
It’s an easy way to refill my glass.

Fabulous BBQ, perfect ribs, jalapeño Mac and cheese is worth the price of admission. I go ribs every time because there’re so decadent but the brisket is legit too and I imagine would satisfy even the snobbiest of Texas BBQ aficionados. If you live anywhere near this place or pass through Richmond with any frequency, you should have been here by now!
Also just to compare the ribs straight up to Buz and Ned’s also in Richmond, I would say these are better but only by a hair. These are more heavily seasoned with a more peppery/​paprika-​y rub and the spice flavor and smoke flavor pop big time. Meanwhile, the ribs at B&N’s, which I also love, are a little juicier and less rub-​forward and they’re also finished with a sweet glaze over direct heat. Anyways, I’ll avoid judging technique and just say that I appreciate both preparations but these ribs from Alamo have more «going on» then their brothers at Buz and Ned’s whose ribs are still delectable.

Amazing food. Highly recommend the train wreck. My favorite is the Sausage Links. They are cooked to perfection and have an amazing smoky flavor.

I was raised in a household that valued three things above all others: honesty, hard work, and barbecue. My father cared about barbecue like it was his third son. He would cook up huge racks of ribs and the juiciest pulled pork I’ve ever had. I can smell those hot summer evenings that we used to spend together in the backyard by the grill. The smoke would float into the oak trees at the back of the yard, sneaking between the leaves in a rush to find the open sky. My dad, in his white t-​shirt and cut-​off jean shorts, never meant more to me than he did on those days. He would tell me about the world, how to be kind to people and how to love those who hated you. He was hated by many, and he knew it. It seemed not to bother him, but there were nights when I could hear him sobbing in the kitchen. Once, I asked him what he was doing in the kitchen late at night, and he said he was eating some of the leftover brisket that he had made earlier that evening. It was so good, he swore, he couldn’t sleep without eating more of it. He didn’t lie often so it obvious he was scared to tell me the truth.
I think he would have loved Alamo. It is by far my favorite barbecue joint in Richmond, the one that feels most authentic. There is a life to the meat. It bounces around your mouth, clinging to every tastebud on your tongue. When you eat at Alamo, sitting outside at a picnic table, you are there and nowhere else. The city quiets down, waits for you to finish. The meal envelops you and embraces you like a warm blanket on a rainy day. There is no limit to the time you will spend because I’m not sure you ever leave. There are more things to try every time you stop by, so you have to stop by. The Train Wreck has become my favorite. It is an amalgam of existence, an incorporation of individual entities collected together in one body; it is life, a messy experience but a rewarding and hopeful experience. There is nothing like it because sometimes it feels like everything.
When I go to Alamo, I think of my father. I forget about him sometimes, and I regret myself when I do, but he is as real as ever when I get the first smoky scent of Alamo. He sits to my left, teaching me how to love even when there’s no light. You’ll find where you’re going, he says, you’ll get there.

Very yummy and cool barbecue spot in Richmond! Alamo has outdoor seating only and though I went when it was raining, I still thought it had a really unique set up. I had a pulled chicken sandwich with jalapeño Mac and cheese. I loved that cole slaw was in the sandwich itself and it was delicious. The jalapeño Mac and cheese was good as well, and it had a spicy kick to it. The limeade was TOO sweet for my taste, so I got a sweet tea instead. Overall, I would definitely recommend this place to others and hope to come back soon!

Best BBQ in Richmond, the train wreck is the go to for me whenever I stop by here. I been to quite a few BBQ places around rva but this place definitely takes first place for me. I wish there weren’t flies flying around but it a sit out door type of place so can’t really complain.
The Mac and cheese is superb same with the corn bread

Amy and I visited Alamo BBQ for lunch. This was her first time and ordered the quesadilla with brisket ($ 8.99) and a limeade. It was excellent and huge. The brisket was delicious. She couldn’t eat it all. The limeade really hit the spot too. I love that they have the large water jug outside. I drink a lot of water I like the ability to refills myself. The fish tacos I ordered didn’t hit the spot as they usually do. something was a bit off. Great spot for quick lunch that is reasonably priced.

Okay. So I love Alamo. I really do.
I recommend Alamo to all of my friends. When my folks from out of town come to visit, we always make a stop here.
The onliest thing is that they’re inconsistent. Sometimes the Mac and cheese is sooooooo good. Other times it’s meh. Sometimes the brisket in my burrito is tender and, frankly, magical. And other times it’s 60% fat.
If the awesome outweighed the meh, I wouldn’t even complain! But as of right now, they’re about even.
Also, when placing catering orders, it can get a little hairy — my organization has a not-​so-​positive experience. Long story short — we got the run-​around for a week, only to be told that they couldn’t service us. These things happen in business, but I definitely left a bad taste in our mouths.

I wish I was giving them five star. I was very excited to try out the BBQ here, but I was underwhelmed. Perhaps it was late in the day, as they even closed early, turning customers away, because they were out of food. I was just here and I can’t even remember what specific platter I ordered! I was not impressed with the pulled pork. The jalapeño mac and cheese did not wow me. Even my dinner date was not a fan of anything he ordered. The good thing is that we crossed this off of our bucket list, but we will not be back. Even the sweet tea was just fine. Luckily, a free Unilocal check-​in gave me that. Also be prepared to wait a long time for your food to come out.

Very unique and laid back restaurant. Was excited to try their BBQ but sadly they were out of pork (hence the 4 star review) so had to settle for the smoked chicken to go with my train wreck. The cornbread was perfect, I just wish the meal was a little more filling. A good place for a quick and light lunch

Overall I enjoyed the meal I ordered but it was only after changing it due items on the menu that were not ready (Ribs and Jalapeño mac and cheese).
The brisket and smoked sausage were awesome. I will definitely be back and hopefully try more of the menu!

Absolutely FURIOUS that there was no jalapeño mac n cheese. I still ordered the trainwreck realizing it will not taste the same. I almost feel like leaving even less stars, but I’m trying not to be so dramatic about it…
Apparently there was a batch initially that was ruined so they are making it over… i get it and appreciate that their standards are high, as the tastiness of it goes to prove, but that does not currently help me.
Don’t mind me or mind me that I will continue to stew over this and consider whether I ever want to come back. Yes, that is how incredibly disappointed and upset I am.

Three words Jalapeño Mac n’Cheese– maybe that 4 words? maybe 2? Regardless, you could pick any of the following one words to describe it… delicious, stupendous, amazing, remarkable, luscious, tempting, heavenly, flavorful, delightful, appetizing, delectable, magnificent, ambrosial, scrumptious, tasty… You get my drift.
I don’t eat pork, which usually makes BBQ places low on my list, but Alamo is ready for people like me with a brisket that melts on your tongue. The Texas Trainwreck is incredibly massive (it was two full meals for me and I’m a good eater!) and full of flavor. The cornbread makes me dream about it and the limeaid is something you’ll need a giant glass of, tangy and perfect.
The staff is super chill, friendly and extra suggestive about accommodations or changes to make the best meal possible within your chosen diet. There’s lots of seating (outdoors!) and after dark it’s gorgeous with the strings of lights and the city view. (But still not as beautiful as the jalapeño mac and cheese!)

I happened to go through the «Cheap Eats» portion of Unilocal and came across Alamo. What crossed my eye was the $ 4.50 BBQ sandwich.
When we pulled up, we could smell tne barbecue from across the street so that was a major plus.
I got the pulled pork sandwich with slaw and i was anticipating for it to suck (Ima North Carolina BBQ type of chick) but it was actually pretty good. Im guessing that the prices have recently gone up because it was $ 6 but that’s still not terrible.
I put some of their famous «Boom Sauce» on it and demolished it under 2 minutes. Lol.
Very nice place to go if you want to eat outside (especially in the spring). If you check in, you get a free tea or limeade but get the half and half because it was amaazziiinnnggg!

I love BBQ… but I really wanted to believe the hype when I decided to eat lunch here. Is not that bad, but is not the best BBQ I’ve had. No inside seating and about 8 tables outside. I had the ribs with coleslaw.

Alamo BBQ! Now that spring is here my dog, Sam, and I will be hitting up Alamo quite a bit on our way home from the bark park. It doesn’t get much better, in Richmond, then chowing down on a pork sandwich, jalapeño Mac, and collard greens on a nice evening outside, surrounded by good people and cool pups. Alamo’s vibe is right and their food is delicious.

I love Alamo. I actually love that there’s no inside dining area and that you’re eating under a tent. It feels more authentic that way, like I’m eating at a hidden gem. Even though I’m obviously not because the place has 450+ reviews. My co-​worker from Texas says this place is the real deal.
Walk up to the counter, order your food, sit on the patio furniture, and enjoy!
The food:
Corn bread — basic, tasted fine.
BBQ — decent option
Cole Slaw — average, basic, tasty cole slaw
Cowboy Beans — excellent flavor
Brisket — Probably the best I’ve had, if not, at least top 3
Jalapeño Mac & Cheese — YASSS QWEEN! Holy grail of Mac and Cheese
Price:
Can of PBR — insanely overpriced
Everything else — excellent price, excellent portions
I will definitely be back because I want to try every single thing on the menu.
PS. As an environmental engineer, please stop serving everything in styrafoam– it breaks my little heart.

Lord have mercy. If you live in Richmond and haven’t been to Alamo yet, you need to get your ass up Church Hill and put some South in your mouth!
Alamo is probably by no comparison THE BEST BBQ spot in Richmond. I used to think Buzz and Ned’s on Boulevard was the standard, but from a price and quality standpoint, these two could go toe to toe any day.
Here’s the thing: Alamo has much more variety. They offer not only traditional BBQ favorites (ribs, chicken, pork, brisket), but they also do quesadillas, burritos, and my personal favorite, the Texas Trainwreck: a bowl filled with your choice of meat (I usually order the links), jalapeño mac and cheese, baked beans and cornbread, loaded with onions and peppers and bathed in Alamo’s sweet BBQ sauce. They have quite a few more sides to choose from, and while I do love Buzz and Ned’s for serving spiced apples (my personal BBQ side favorite), Alamo has more «southern» sides (collards, baked and black beans, Texas Caviar, mac n cheese) I also firmly believe Alamo has the best cornbread out of any BBQ joint in the capital city, so if you love a sweet, buttery cornbread, this is your spot.
Pair your meal with a fine selection of local beers, Coke products or a fresh limeaid or Arnold Palmer and you’re set to have one of the finest BBQ meals you’ll ever eat. A+

As a girl who has tried a lot of BBQ this place is one of my favorites. I love the place, I love the people and the food is AH-​MAZING! When you come here just by looking at the exterior you know you are about to enjoy some down home cooking bbq! I have never had a bad experience here and I’ve never eaten anything bad here.
My go to main dishes is the Cuban sandwich, the brisket the quesadilla. The Cuban can either come with pulled pork, links or chicken. I always get the pulled pork but I have tried the links and both are equally tasty. It is a little on the spicy side which I love. Now for the sides I agree with everyone else in that if you are a newbie you have to try the jalapeño Mac and cheese. But some of my other favorites are the potato salad (which in the winter is discontinued and replaced by garlic mash potatoes, still on point) and their Cole slaw. I know some people love the Texas caviar, me personally I’m not a fan but, hey still try everything once!

Good but not great BBQ, place was packed while I was there so there was quite a wait. While there is some outdoor seating, I think this place works best as a grab and run location. Staff is friendly but I sense no real urgency in moving people in line quickly.
Pulled pork sandwich was good, meat was moist and plentiful, accompanying sauce was sweet with no real power behind it. Roll was fresh and soft, it had all the components of a sandwich but there wasn’t any real wow factor.
While I wouldn’t go out of my way to visit, if I was in the neighborhood, I’d go up to the order window again.
