Open 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, the ERCS is a Fairfax County emergency shelter located in Reston(by the Police Department and Library). It’s sponsored by the nonprofit organization Cornerstones(formerly Reston Interfaith). I had the pleasure of stopping by this facility one weekday evening, after a hosting a pizza party for an after-school program. We had many leftover pizzas and I offered to bring them over to ERCS. They readily accepted and were very pleasant when I delivered. The place is busy, but clean and functioning well. You can tell that the staff work hard and really care.

Good works continue at the Embry Rucker Shelter. This community phenomenon offers food and shelter for families in need year round. They also operate a hypothermia center in the winter months for homeless people who might not otherwise come in despite the plunging temperatures. Both programs have Fairfax County social workers on staff, but they remain dependent on the generous volunteers from the surrounding communities who are also the source of donations. Susan is the volunteer coordinator. A shelter wish list is posted online for anyone wanting to help directly by donating new clothing or personal items for current clients.
