Concept: Tinder for Reno sushi spots. Quality nigiri? Swipe right. Snail’s pace service? Swipe left. Off-menu hamachi kama? RIGHT! Funky gimmick roll with a sauce you’ve never heard of? Red flag, but we’ll see, I guess… Surfing through the growing sea of this city’s sushi scene is just as daunting and trivial as serial dating. It’s so easy to bounce from place to place without really finding one that clicks. The real key to finding a great match is in knowing exactly what you’re looking for. For me, Hiroba clicked: good nigiri, speedy service, and TEMAKI. I’m a nigiri fiend, and Hiroba’s pretty dec with its quality in cuts and freshness, but what really hooked me were the hand rolls. Every single roll on the menu is available in temaki form, which is fantastic for someone that doesn’t want to commit to a full long roll; it gives you more variety in your quest to chow down. Plus, there’s something whimsically pleasing about going to town on a cone of food. Eating sushi by the handful: what’s not to love? For those ill-acquainted with the hand roll revolution, I urge you to join ASAP! Standouts included the Salmon Skin(because you can’t go wrong with fried fish and yamagobo), the Tundra(lots of seafood topped if with mango and honey mustard!), Rukki, and Black Tiger. Everything else hit the mark on being super satisfying. The nigiri spanned from decent to great. I loved the quality of the unagi, but the cuts on the saba and the hamachi looked a little worse for wear… though it’s hard to validly knock knifework when you opt for AYCE. Luckily, everything was decently fresh at its worst, and the flavor on the saba was strong without being overwhelming. Yakiton is probably the only cream-cheese heavy thing on a sushi menu that I’ll indulge in, and Hiroba’s is one of the better deep fried apps around. The calamari was great for quick snackage. The one maki long roll that I did try, the Veggie Tempura, offered up some great crunchiness. Great as the food was, this is a surprisingly small place with a big following: don’t go at peak hours without expecting a wait. Service for us was lightning fast, but I can imagine that they can get pretty backed up depending on the hour and the staff on-hand. Overall, I can definitely see myself coming back just to chow down on a shameful amount of hand rolls. Hiroba and I are a solid match for the time being, and we’ll just have to see if the spark is still there the next time I swing by.

Food wasn’t bad at all and service could have been better. Would have probably given it 4 stars until I went to the bathroom which was nasty but the worst part was while I was waiting I saw the nastiest kitchen ever and to top it off the cook dropped a pair of tongs on the floor and proceeded to pick them up and use them on the food, after seeing that I will never return. Absolutely disgusting

Pros Portions: unlike other AYCE sushi restaurants, they actually keep all their food servings sizes smaller, which is great so you can try an assortment of all their items on their AYCE menu. Less rice: all their nigiri, hand rolls, and sushi rolls are not overly filled with rice, so it was nice that the rice, fish, and other ingredients are portioned evenly. Salmon skin hand roll: The skin is deep fried to perfection yet they let it air dry enough so it doesn’t drip in oil as you bite into it. The salmon skin gives it that savory taste while you get a hint of sweetness from the unagi sauce. Service: The girls working in the front and the waitresses are super friendly and do their best to accommodate you despite the full house. Cons: Sashimi: the only dislike I had about my visit was their sashimi. It wasn’t exactly the freshest sashimi I had. Overall this place is worth the try if you have a huge appetite for sushi.

Hiroba is a good sushi place, it really is. Been here multiple times throughout the past couple of years. The service can be iffy sometimes, but the waitresses really try to be attentive even when it’s extremely busy. The sushi itself is good, the fish is fresh. The rolls are creative. However the cleanliness of the restaurant is disgusting. My recent visit to Hiroba was not so pleasant due to cleanliness of the place. The floor was cluttered with old sushi sheets, there were flies everywhere, the spoon they gave me for dessert was caked with a crusty white substance, and I found a dead ant on my plate. I really started to question how clean the kitchen was. I still think the sushi Hiroba has to offer is good however I think the lack of cleaning and attention to the kitchen has deterred me from coming back.

Replaced the mats on the table besides us after the people moved to a different table with their drinks and appetizers but did NOT wipe the table down at all. Waitress did brush something off the table with her hand. That’s sanitary right?!! They DID wipe the table down after the second set of people sat down ate and left. Calamari appetizer is what my hubby got for his all you can eat sushi. He said it was tasteless. No flavor at all BUT was not chewy. I got the Yakiton for my appetizer and it was very yummy. Crunchy on the outside and soft and flavorful on the inside. Seating is HORRID! You are packed in like sardines hope you like the people they seat you beside! I posted a photo with my husband and how close we were to the table next to us. Paradise King Kong Spicy Tuna All great rolls! We seriously enjoyed them! Great fresh taste. SERVICE is AMAZING! Makes up for the closeness of the tables and tasteless calamari! NOMILITARYDISCOUNTAVAILABLE

This is the best AYCE sushi place I have tried in Reno. The nigiri is never too tough or mushy. Huge plus, the rice never comes out super warm. This is a huge«no no» for me when judging sushi. But Hiroba always succeeds in perfecting its sushi rice. Service is always good and they’re on top of it when giving you a new sheet to order. My favorite part is when checking in they ask for your phone number so you can walk around or sit in your car.

Hiroba was a great experience! By far the best overall all you can eat sushi joint in town! But like all places it has it flaws but it’s not that big of a deal! Pros: Fresh nigiri! Thick cut slices of the nigiri Quality of the fish was good! And color was great. These are the most important things to me when eating sushi in general at a all you can eat joint. Cons: they can add a few more items on the menu! I’m huge on raw sushi rolls and do not care so much for the cook. I believe there were more cooked than there were raw. You

I came here with my lady friend for lunch on a Sunday. The place was crowded, but not quite full. It took about 15 minutes to get seated, not bad. It kind of had a busy atmosphere, and that was reflected with the customer service. We did the all-you-can-eat(AYCE) and got to try out multiple rolls. I’d say the sushi here is good, but I’ve had better. Like most AYCE sushi places, the quality in sushi trades in for quantity, and that’s ok. I thought it was interesting that we had to submit our orders via paper. What I liked about that was the fact I could cross out certain ingredients from sushi rolls that I didn’t want. The rolls that we ordered were pretty accurate as far as their listed description. The sushi wasn’t stacked with too much rice, which I appreciated. My favorite roll was called… The Bill’s roll I think. It had unagi, tempura, spicy crab, and avocado. To be honest that was the only memorable roll I had! As far as customer service goes… all the ladies that helped us out that day were very kind. I think the business of the place took away a little bit of their attentiveness. It didn’t bother me much, but if that was improved they would definitely be able to turn tables over more quickly. Overall, the food was good and I was happy by the time I left. Cheers

The sushi is just okay. There are far better places to have sushi in Reno — Tha Joint(the original one in Sparks NOT2 Tha Joint on Plumb in Reno) and Atlantis are way better. I’ve been here 3 times and have yet to understand the hype of this place that many locals swear by. Pros: small rolls(with not a lot of rice, which is nice), friendly staff, prompt refills on drinks, and most of our orders came out accurately(some we had to ask for a second time and some rolls we received that weren’t ours. No biggie except that they threaten a .50 charge per roll left behind –per their menu-). Cons: very dirty restaurant(dried Wasabi, dust and food on the window sills, dirty tables, floors, silverware, and a putrid odor where we were seated today –almost like urine although we were nowhere near the restroom; in fact on the complete opposite side of the building), very packed in there and tiny tables make it difficult if you go there with a large party –not much room to be comfortable with all of the trays of sushi which arrive all at once. There are many, many sushi places in Reno… Hiroba isn’t one I’ll likely go out of my way to again. Good but not spectacular.

Get off the couch and go eat here! The staff is amazing, very friendly, FAST, happy and willing to help. We never had to wait for our rolls, they were made in a few minutes or less, never have I been to a place where you get your rolls that fast. Every roll was delicious and didn’t fall apart when you tried to pick it up. Tonight was free sake night as well! Our chef even went out of his way and made me a special roll. It was super cute and sweet of him! I loved it there and I will be going back soon.

My favorite sushi spot in Reno! I love it, because they offer so many different combinations in their rolls. It’s not all stuffed with crab and drizzled with sauce like some other popular places in town. I most recently tried the Sun Flower roll and Wow! This unique roll is spicy and topped banana. It had a really interesting flavor and was perfect as our last roll for the night. All of the appetizers are delicious and the nigiri has a good fish to rice ratio, so the ayce will always give you a very well rounded meal. Chef Justin is my favorite! He really understands what flavors you like, and his rolls are like a piece of art. Sit at the bar with him if you have a chance :)

Be warned: things are about to get raw! Went to Hiroba today for lunch. Choose to do AYCE. Appetizers were amazing(mussels, Calamari, Gyoza). Sushi was so luscious and combine with other ingredients amazingly well. Incredible– seriously so delicious sushi not overloaded with rice. Best quality sushi had in Reno so far! The fish was so fresh. Great salmon and tuna without a doubt! Rich of flavors and aromas. So delicious… So tasty … So buttery. The Quail egg shooters were bloody good. The desserts were pretty tasty. Free Sake during weekdays with AYCE. The chef. Jason was wonderful and attentive and he surprised us with some of really neat treat rolls. Service was so fast and pleasant. Overall, it was some of the best I have eaten. Great experience.

This place is one of my all time favorite sushi joints in town. While the wait can sometimes be obnoxiously long(hence 4 stars instead of 5) I know it’s not something the business can necessarily help as they do stay relatively busy. Of all the times I’ve been, I’ve only sat at a table my very first time. All other times I’ve sat at the bar. I’d have to say bar service beats table service. All the employees have been super nice and helpful and have made great sushi rolls. I don’t know if it’s the fish, or my luck, but earlier this year I had to have surgery. Afterwards, all I wanted was sushi. I made a joke with the lady and she said only liquids. I disobeyed and begged my mom to take me to sushi. Safe to say, I had a healthy appetite, and only left slightly hungry because my mom was scared I’d pop from all I ate. But I had no issues from the surgery after eating solids, after eating this delicious sushi :) I haven’t been here in a while, and I think I need to make a return soon!

We just had a work team lunch here today. Everyone got all you can eat and we shared the food family style. Everything was fresh, well prepared and very good. I really enjoyed the spicy tuna. The salmon, tuna, and yellowtail were all extremely fresh and tasty. The eel was tender and the right amount of sauce. Our waitress was awesome. Always smiling, regularly checking on us, and wished us a happy new year at he end. I also love how all the cooks say hello and goodbye when you come and go.

This review is on the sushi«chef» we got this time not on Hiroba as a resturaunt, because we’ve had nothing but great service before this. Really dissapointed with how we were treated by the tall, young sushi guy that yells so loud every time someone comes in that it startles you and you cannot enjoy your meal. He blatantly would take our orders and when someone else threw an order at him he would do theirs first and ours last. He asked everyone how their meal was and what else they would like when he didn’t do that ONCE with us. We had to keep asking for our rolls ourselves and literally sitting there waiting for him to finally make ours… I’m not sure what his problem was. Again, I’ve always had amazing service here. Rolls: This is the first time I experienced this at Hiroba ASWELL, he cut all the rolls so sloppily that they would fall apart on every piece and he didn’t cut them through all the way, they were all attached at the seaweed line. He also riced us to death on our FIRST rolls! Really? So we were forced to stick with nigiri for the rest of our meal. Please spend less time yelling at new customers and more time serving the people in front of you. We will do our best to AVOID this sushi chef every time we come in from now on.

We’ve heard about this place for years, but just never get to that side of town. Seriously great sushi and service! We loved everything about our sushi. We especially loved that the fish, rather than the rice was the focus. The entire staff is so friendly and prompt. No soon did we finish with a dish, and the plate was being removed. Our sushi chef was very attentive! We definitely have a new favorite sushi place.

There’s no such thing as casual AYCE. There is necessary preparation and planning before entering and starting the flow and inhalation of rolls and nigiri. Thankfully, Hiroba makes the preparation and price worthwhile. The appetizers are all solid, but what makes Hiroba stand out the most is the quality and freshness of the fish they utilize! The nigiri is always super fresh, and the rolls are always great due to the great quality of ingredients. Personal favorite rolls include Golden Gate, Tundra, and Snow Mountain, along with classics like the Spider and Spicy Tuna Rolls. The service is at times hit or miss. Two out of the three times I went to Hiroba, the waitresses were so friendly and amazing! However, on one of our visits, the waitress was snappy and made us feel uncomfortable. But overall, I’m glad to have found my go-to sushi place in Reno!

Great AYCE sushi place in Reno! Enjoyable atmosphere, tasty sushi, superb service and reasonable prices. 50min wait on a Sunday at 7pm; this place was slammed until closing time. Dinner AYCE is $ 22.95/ea and includes unlimited appetizers, nigiri(2/order), long rolls and hand rolls, and 1 dessert. Excellent fish quality for most things. The hamachi was really wonderful, the salmon and tuna were average. For the price, quite a deal. Rolls were nicely assembled, neatly done and not over-riced, which is always great. The service really set this place apart; very attentive without being overbearing, and incredibly fast! Will definitely be back.

Hiroba definitely earns a spot in my top five favorite sushi joints. The staff is always friendly and I’m consistently satisfied with their all you can eat sushi. Just be prepared for a 15 – 20 minute wait for a seat. & If you can, get a spot at the bar rather than a table. I notice whenever I’m seated at a table I happen to miss out on 2 – 3 rolls or appetizers that had been ordered. Other than that, I have had no problems with my orders. Everything always tastes fresh with lots of flavor. A couple of my favorites are the R&B, Godzilla, Snow Mountain, and their Sun Flower long roll but anything on their menu is great. If you’re getting AYCE, don’t skip out on dessert! I always get the tempura banana and ice cream, no matter how full I think I am! I also love how the staff seems to be always on top of things… even during their evening rush. Whenever I have friends visiting from out of town, this is where I take them. I definitely recommend giving them a try.

July 19, 2015 Sunday — 7:30PM for dinner 6 Adults and 2 kids Atmosphere — 5 stars Food — 5 stars Service — 5 stars Background — We were invited to dinner by some great friends. We were all discussing sushi the night before. Sushi with seasoned pros is awesome as I am more on the novice side. Atmosphere — Part of a strip mall Food Drinks — Just water tonight with my meal. Does the quail egg shooter count? It was excellent. I should have ordered another one. Dinner — Six adults doing All You Can Eat(AYCE) is great. First you can order several rolls at once and not even feel guilty. There is also the case you do not like something there are others that will eat it. This was not the case tonight. We actually had to order some of the rolls again. The sushi and all the food popped with flavor and were not buried behind a thick wall of rice. You always leave stuffed, and I am glad missed lunch and only had little to snack on in the afternoon. Service — We got there at 5PM, and had a 45 minute wait for the party of eight. Great waitress and the cooks were awesome. Our second round of rolls were all picked by the staff and delivered and they were yummy. Future — Yes, yes, yes. Going with groups for Sushi is always fun.
