John Houston Custom Homes

We have had constant communication failures from the JHH team which has been a systemic issue that has spread from the sales office, architect, purchasing to the design center.
We have been trying to make progress but it has been 34 days and nothing has been done. We do not have an agreement in our hands and zero grading has been done. Nothing but lip service and zero communication leads to a failed business model.
I should have given more credence to the negative comments I have read online before moving forward with them.
Stay far far away…

Originally home to be finished in November 2015, We have lived in a Hotel since October 2015 with expected delivery before Thanksgiving, then Christmas, then mid January. ITs now the 26^th of January (hopefully). This company has a great story that drew us to them but you have to constantly watch the workmanship. I am not trained in construction but have had to go to site so much and find mistakes that it has mentally, physically and spiritually drained me and my wife. You have to watch everything. We are supposed to close next week and was looking over Master bath – glass tiles crooked, 12″ tiles off by ¼ inch, We had originally picked the stain colors for home only to have all the kitchen and bath cabinets stained a dark walnut color that had to be stripped. All the banisters and step had to be stripped. I have lights that are not centered and supposedly can’t be centered, elevation done incorrectly on front of house (to be corrected). Also, took almost 10 weeks to brick and stone the front of house, while houses around me that were started after me got finished.
I was told by my original salesperson that I was checking on the house to often and let them do there job, even though I was the person finding mistakes. She even told me that I was incorrect about my cabinet color even though the design center said it was wrong. It took 2 weeks for them to finally get that straight.
I the homes future buyer had to find all these mistakes and these are just a few of them. When you ask them to correct them there is always a excuse. Also when you contact corporate– you receive little to no sympathy and get shot back down to lower managers. The only thing they have helped with is some fees that my loan has accumulated.
After this experience, I will never build again and never recommend John Houston Homes.

Workmanship is cheap. Company reps will not call you back and won’t stand behind their work. Our house is 18 months old and water leaks through the mortar, brick, and stone every time it rains. I will say the homes look great, the «guts» of the home is complete junk. Would recommend you steer clear of homes built by this company. Pay more if you have to to get better quality. One of their employees lived in this home for a year before they sold it, so of course they honor no warranty even though it is obviously poor craftsmanship causing water leaks. If I could give less than one star I would.

We own a John Houston home in Ovilla, Texas. We love the floor plans too but we have had a few problems with the warranty department. That’s unfortunate. We now have a leaking roof and they still haven’t been able to get someone out here. Now we have attic dampness, wet insulation and dry wall damage. I say look else where until JHouston’s reviews start getting better. Talk to home owners before you buy!

My review is based on service alone. I recieved a call from one of their representative from thier company about a new nieghboorhood, I was really interested in the new nieghborhood so they suggested I visit Cabot Estates where their model home is located. Yesterday, I went with my family to the model home the lady that was there gave no greeting so my family just went and toured the home on our own, and on the way out the lady stated did you find what you were looking for. No hi no how can I help you. The company prides it’s self on being a family but I felt like my business was definitely not wanted. The home was beautiful I would be leary about building with them if the customer service is like that upfront.

We love our home and couldn’t be more pleased with the whole process. From the sales manager and the builder we were kept informed the whole time. I highly recommend anybody that is looking for a builder to please check out John Houston Custom Homes.

Now that my home is completed, I would like to give an update to my original review. I will start by pointing out the positives in saying that all and all, J Houston builds a good home and my expectations were met from a construction standpoint. Stuart, our sales person, has by far exceeded my expectations in customer service. Through the whole process, he was about the only person I could rely on. He followed through with his promises and while many of the issues I encountered were out of his hands, he always did whatever he could to help me through them. My house turned out beautifully and I cannot complain about the home itself in the least.
Unfortunately, my rating of this builder has dropped because of the lack of follow through and avoidable delays caused by the building team (not subcontracted construction). While I wont go into all the lengthy details, I can say that I never felt a sense of urgency from them, even after their mistakes pushed my closing back over a month. Just about every time I would go to check on the house (which was frequently) I rarely saw anyone working. The weather would be sunny and nice out and I’m being told «we trying to finish as quickly as possible», yet I would never see anyone working and nothing seemed to be getting done. My home finished a month later than it was suppose to, which caused a lot of problems for me. I never felt the urgency from our superintendent, attempting to get it done any quicker. While I am no rookie in the home building process and know that there is always room for delays, what upsets me is that they were all caused by the superintendents lack of involvement and mistakes.
I am not in anyway wanting to put anyone down, but here is my advice to future customers of J Houston Homes — plan to be EXTREAMLY involved with your building process. If you think you can stop by every week or so, think again! A lot of mistakes were made in my home and after talking to many of my neighbors, this is a consistent sentiment. I am currently living in my home and still waiting for a few items to be completed (again with no sense of urgency) because I simply could not push my closing out any further. I hope this is not a common occurrence with this builder because this is definitely an issue that needs to be worked out.

After buying a houses from various builders through out my life. It was disappointing to see how these houses are built after have bought it. During the final walk through I was reminded several times that the house is presented to the new owner (me) as «construction ready». I understand there are things that are missed and they will fix later. It just appears to be nobody is completing their own walk throughs before the final. The the mistakes you find after you move in are incredible.

Love our home, but follow through was not as it should have been and left us disappointed overall. Maybe it is the main contact person that matters – if you get a good one, all will be well, otherwise you will be frustrated.

Bumbling fools. Very unsophisticated and unprofessional.
Tried to buy a spec home from them — inspector found numerous problems (plumbing, electrical, masonry). Getting the builder to fix those problems was a comedy of errors — they would initially deny the existence of problems, then claim they fixed them when they actually didn’t.
Hot water wasn’t working in most of the home’s faucets — builder denied any problems. We discovered that they had crossed the hot/​cold connections!
Trying to speak to a supervisor didn’t get anywhere — even he denied the existence of problems and accused us of making things up.
The hassles and runaround trying to buy from JHH weren’t worth the effort — we canceled our deal and found another home.
