Deep South is one of the coolest music venues in the Triangle. Thursday-Sunday, catch local bands for a cheap price. Tuesdays and Wednesdays, come out for Open Mic. Open Mic nights are incredible at Deep South, consistently rated among the best in the Triangle. The staff is very friendly and tries to get to know you. There is always a good crowd on Tuesday nights, and everybody in the community is very supportive. Comedians also are welcome and well-received. There are also some unintentionally funny acts, including a certain Asian Unilocaler who boozed too hard one night before performing, but overall, the talent level is downright staggering. Deep South only truly lacks two things — food and drink specials. Food options are limited to chips and salsa for $ 5 or sandwiches delivered from Jimmy John’s. Drink specials don’t really exist. Although they only feature craft beers on tap, the variety may not be as large as the more seasoned boozers would like it to be. I greatly appreciate what Deep South provides to Raleigh, and I highly encourage all musicians and music lovers to check it out.

Nice venue for local bands. I came to see my brother’s band Go Go Hero play. They do original music. They had 3 bands booked for the night and they each played one set. It was a good time. It was loud inside. I didn’t need ear plugs, but it was close. It was hard to talk when the bands were playing. The drinks were good, they had a small but quality selection of draft beer.

Great local music venue. Nice place to unwind after a show at Red Hat Ampitheatre. They almost always have specials and a cover band. Bathrooms not shockingly appalling!

If you are looking for a cool place to grab a couple brews and see some great local music any day of the week, look no farther. Deep South has free live music every night, which is great when you have a crazy schedule like me and your Wednesdays are your weekend. The original cocktails are pretty fun and the draft list has some sweet local offerings. As far as music goes, you can catch local giants Unifer one night and then see some great lesser known local acts the next and then the next night attend a Ryan Adams tribute. There’s such a wide range of talented individuals who play there — you are sure to find something you’ll like. As far as atmosphere goes, you will never NOT have something to look at – the walls are red and plastered in song lyrics painted on by friends of the company as well as various signed posters by artists from Joan Jett to Parmalee. Then there’s the bar top itself which has a clear resin overlaying backstage passes and ticket stubs collected through the years by the bar’s owners. This place is just saturated with music history and stories — that in and of itself is a reason to go! Also, it is super close to Red Hat Amphitheater, which means you could go to a show there and follow your musical interlude with a chaser of more great music! The outdoor patio is pretty nice too and if you’re into pool, they’ve got a table in the back. All in all, I would recommend checking this musical establishment out — you won’t be sorry you did.

I moved up from Austin a few months back and have been looking to get acquainted with the local haunts for live music. I was pumped to see a show featuring Steely Dan and yacht rock cover bands last weekend, and convinced a handful of folks to join me for some smoooooth music. The show was great, in part because Deep South is a phenomenal venue. This is a no-frills place that’s all about the music. Really laid back vibe with song lyrics written on the walls throughout the place that give it a funky /divey feel. It was crowded, but not overwhelmingly so. A good portion of the folks there were able to sit in either the booths or at the high top tables scattered about the bar. Staff was friendly and the drinks were well-priced. Actually ran into the owner(I think it was Dave?) outside, really nice guy with a cool vision for the place. I give it five stars, will definitely be on the look out for interesting shows at this place.

I’ve been to Deep South, or as my friends affectionately call it, Dirty South, a few times and it’s a solid venue with great bar. I also love all the quotes on the wall!

What a wonderful place for drinks and live music! The staff are always very nice, drinks are always on sale and I am a huge fan of the music décor. Song lyrics are everywhere! There’s room for dancing, booths to sit down or go outside and enjoy the patio. There open 365 days, CraZy! Sometimes there’s a cover charge and sometimes there isn’t just depends on who’s playing that night. Give it a try and if you love music you wont be disappointed!

Hadn’t been there until I went to go see my friend’s band perform there and I had just a fantastic time. The cover was decent, the environment was laid-back and comfortable, the service was oh so friendly. They give a lot of little local, but very quality, bands the opportunity to share their awesome music with a group of awesome people. It’s definitely warm and easygoing which makes for a great night. Also love the lyrics on the wall. It’s definitely a fantastic place for friendly music lovers looking to get some drinks

My wife and I only stopped into this place as it was on the way to the Red Hat Amphitheater, so we had no idea what to expect. We were both pleasantly surprised. It’s not pretty or classy… in fact it’s not much to look at all, except for the fascinating mix of song verses painted on its red walls, but I must confess that I really liked the tri-leg antenna tower that was cut into sections and used for shelving behind the bar. The regular 20-something crowd probably makes up most of the customer base, but on that night(bluegrass festival) there was a nice age mix. Some college, some blue collar, some professionals, and of course us touristas. They had a young friendly staff serving a decent selection of reasonably priced beers and mixed drinks. They have a single pool table in back and live music on a stage up front. What we really appreciated was that the place had the feel of some of the friendly neighborhood taverns or bars we all love back at home. We met and enjoyed the company of several people there, so I suspect that Deep South doesn’t try to impress so much as it is just content to deliver a warm welcome and a comfortable drinking experience.

Would I call Deep South a dive bar? I don’t know, I’ve definitely been in worse. I actually love the décor and atmosphere, it’s laid back and not full of drunk college kids. I would call it a great place to see live music. The cover is usually reasonable and there is always a drink special. Most of the bands that play at Deep South are local or regional, but it’s a nice time and the staff is very friendly. The sound is good but it’s a small place so it’s definitely going to get loud and it’ll be hard to talk while bands are playing. I could definitely hang out here on a regular basis though. They did not have cider which was a bit of a downer but not unexpected. Personally I love the décor. The walls are painted red and are covered with hand painted lyrics from great songs. There are backstage passes and laminates under the glass on the bar, posters from shows on the walls and of course band stickers galore in the bathrooms. I would try NOT to park in the garage. I was in Deep South for about three hours and it cost me $ 6. Lawd!

Nice lil dive bar with a pretty decent accoustic for such a smaller venue. I came here to see Suite 709 perform on Valentine’s Day. I need to go back to get a feel of the food and drinks, this place has to offer, since I only came from the show and didn’t drink or eat. Deep South is located a little out of the way from Fayetteville St in downtown Raleigh, but I could see a nice walk to and from the location when the weather gets nicer. Overall, I had a great time here and I will keep my eyes open about future shows.

Gosh is it a Dive Bar? I’d say so. Pretty cool place though. Go… Hey what happened to the rest of my Review? I just noticed 3 weeks later that my Review stopped there. Now I don’t recall the details. But it is a pretty fun place, been a couple of times to see local bands. Bar staff is pretty fast, they serve Fireballs and just about everything else, the sound is good and lots to look at and read on the walls. I wish I could remember more things to write about it now!

Red. Very red. The walls are covered in it along with lines from various different songs. I assume that some of the patrons of the bars picked out the lines. How do you become one of those people and get a good spot on the wall? Other than the walls the place isn’t very big with a small bar and a few booths. The booths have curtains on them if you want a little privacy. There are also a few games you can entertain yourselves with. Drink specials are decent. Cheap pbr when I went and $ 5 local. I went to see a friend play on their small stage. The acoustics are decent. Somewhere to hang out every once in a while.

Deep South The Bar is located in the«deep south» of downtown Raleigh, north-west of the Raleigh Amphitheater. If you’re looking for a place to grab some very reasonably priced drinks before you go to the Amphitheater, this is your spot! I went there for the first time for a friends band who was playing there. There was a measly cover of $ 3 for the show, but I didn’t have cash. The doorman allowed me and a friend to go in anyway and pay the cover at the bar that accepted visa. Awesome! The first thing I noticed walking in was the pool table as I walked in. It is in terrible condition and coin operated, but at dives that is what I expect. On a positive note, the atmosphere is great for live acts. The walls are adorned with lyrics from dozens of famous music acts. I took a few minutes out of the night to look around and read them. They have two unisex bathrooms located near the pool table, one that had no paper towels(thankfully I was warned about this before I had the unfortunate chance to experience it myself). Sometimes this happens when bars get very busy, but in this case, there was not too many people there and it wasn’t crowded in the least. Still, the atmosphere is a good one and the bartenders are great and very attentive(remembered my name and what I had ordered previously). I will likely be back again to pregame before going to the Raleigh Amphitheater in August for a concert..

15 minutes into my first foray at Deep South, I heard a speed metal cover of Britney Spears’ «Hit me baby one more time.» And somehow, that just made sense; of course you would hear a song like that played in a place like this. If you think that sounds like fun, you’ll like Deep South the Bar. Otherwise, don’t go– they don’t want you there.

Deep South The Bar is definitely your quintessential dive bar and I think they are proud of that fact. It’s small, red in décor and reminds me of a garage. This bar may be off the beaten path a bit compared to say the establishments on Glenwood South and Fayetteville Street in DTR, but it is actually very convenient to the Raleigh downtown amphitheater and makes for a great spot for an after show beer or three. The most interesting thing to me about Deep South The Bar is the quotes from rock songs on the walls. If you are a rock and roll fan like I am you will like this place for that alone. I can stare at the lyrics«The waiting drove me mad… you’re finally here and I’m a mess», and immediately think of the hay day of grunge in the mid-90’s. Other lyrics go back way further than that. They also have a lot of rock and roll memorabilia which adorn the walls. Of all the times I have been to DSTB(2 or 3 times), they have never had a cover charge and that is great because they bring in some really good bands playing there. After the now defunct Bud Light Downtown Live shows at Moore Square Park, some of the musicians would come there later in the evening after their gigs(not to play). I partied down with the members of Better than Ezra there a few years ago. Don’t really care for the Ally McBeal(co-ed) bathrooms. Expect to wait some to go if the place is busy. The bar-tenders are friendly and they have good beer and liquor specials. I don’t think they serve have food, so don’t come hungry.

I really didn’t know what to expect walking into Deep South the other night. The only time I ran into Deep South employees was at the Downtown Raleigh Live concerts where their beautiful bartenders typically passed out Bud Lights. But not tonight! Plunking ourselves down on the bar stools we met up with Chicken Little Deep South’s bartender for the evening and the first Asian dude I’ve seen sportin’ a mohawk! PBR’s were $ 2.25 on Sunday night along with well vodka drinks, score! Inside Deep South it’s all about being an old-school bar and music joint. The walls of Deep South are covered in music memorabilia and lyric grafitti, very cool! They’ve got a small pool room out front and a handful of booths lining the place. Very interesting spot for a relaxing night out with some friends especially if you’re headed to the Raleigh Amphitheater next door. The bartenders, including Chicken Little were relaxed and friendly, nice touch. While you may not think of stopping by and checking out Deep South since it’s off the beaten downtown path, definitely stop by if you’re looking for a chill and low-key environment. No frat boys, no pop-collars, no Ed Hardy. And no complaints here, Deep South makes it easy to relax and start your evening off right!
