Mill Creek Falls and Avenue of the Boulders

Decided to check out this place with my husband and 2 of our dogs while we were vacationing in Oregon back in June of this year. There is a small parking lot that we parked in (do not see the parking lot getting full because this place seems kind of hidden) and there were 2 wooden picnic tables with benches that we decided to have our lunch that we packed before hitting the trail.
The trail we were on seemed nice, shaded and at an easy pace initially. But it was definitely difficult to try to maneuver our way when we were trying to get to the falls. There seemed to be no way going around the giant boulders and so we decided to take the longer way to the falls. But this trail was getting intensely more difficult (I am no newbie to hiking by the way and neither is my husband or 1 of our dogs). After being on this trail for quite some time, we decided to just go on back as the trail started to get more steep and more challenging (seemed a bit dangerous to me the further out we went). So we ended up not making it to the falls but still got a pretty good work out. But I would probably not attempt this hiking trail again, unless it was with a veteran who has already been to the falls and back before.

After spending a few days in and around Ashland, Gayle and I wanted to get out of town, see a little scenery, and go for a nice hike. Bill at the Peerless Restaurant Bar highly recommended that we go to Mill Creek Falls and explore the Avenue of the Boulders.
Mill Creek Falls is located on Highway 62 near Prospect and is on the way to Crater Lake National Park. It’s also an easy, scenic and relatively short drive from Ashland (especially after you clear the Medford sprawl). The road itself becomes the Rogue Umpqua National Scenic Byway and in places runs along the scenic Rogue River
The falls are a short hike from the parking lot and are easily accessible. From the falls you can hike further to the «Avenue of Giant Boulders» at the base. This turned out to be the highlight of the hike. The boulder section featured calm pools of water, sandy beaches, cool scenery, and lots of opportunities to climb around, up, and over. I even have a picture of Gayle’s «joy» regarding these climbing opportunities, that will either turn out to be an inspiration for me or a warning.
