We stopped by for lunch on a Sunday. Their bread and Bruschetta were fantastic! We’ll definitely be back to try dinner.

Absolutely horrible service!!! The waitress who served us had no personality and appeared to be very inconvenienced by simply taking our drink and food order. When I asked about the wine selection, she was very short and then grudgingly said she would go get a suggestion from the bar. We had to ask for our first basket of bread from her and then had to ask again after we noted that she kindly asked the table behind us if they would like more bread. She took away my husbands plate while he had stepped away to use the bathroom and didn’t ask anyone at our table if he was finished or would like his food boxed up. We did notice the only time she was attentive and extremely nice was to the couple of gentlemen that she waited on at the bar. We’ll never be back to this restaurant especially with such horrible service like that.

Wow! This is a terrific restaurant. We were looking for a restaurant to celebrate our daughter’s UNH graduation and chose Café Mediterraneo because the atmosphere looked perfect and the menu had something for everyone. We were not disappointed. We were sat at exactly the time of the reservation. Our server Ashley was attentive and helpful with wine and meal suggestions. The food was terrific. We were a party of fourteen and all the dishes came out at the same time. I was very impressed since the restaurant was full. Everyone was pleased with their meal. I highly recommend Café Mediterraneo. The atmosphere is great. The food was excellent. The staff was friendly and attentive. I’ll be going back with my wife for date night soon.

Good was enjoyable and priced ok for Portsmouth. Veal Picatta was well portioned and cooked just right. Vegetables on the side were a nice touch. Had the Garlic Shrimp as an app which was presented nicely and had just the amount of kick. Drinks were priced accordingly. Desserts(Blueberry Cheesecake) was served nicely but was nothing special. If anything speed of Initial service could have been a bit quicker.

Disappointing. We had a 7:30 reservation and were placed at the worst table in the house — tucked into the corner between the window and door on the dining room side. All 4 of us wore our coats throughout dinner. We waited almost an hour between our salads and our entrees and the salads were slow to arrive as well(2.5 hours total in the restaurant and we weren’t stalling). I got a mere 7 little neck clams(not enough protein — a dozen might have done it) on a mountain of pasta in a wine/garlic sauce that was not very good. My husband had veal Marsala which was«okay» and the others in our party had salmon(which was good) and pasta Alfredo with shrimp… again few shrimp on a mountain of pasta. The atmosphere is nice and the staff is friendly. The prices are reasonable.

Every single time I come to this restaurant the service is awesome, the food is delicious, and the wine is amazing. Very good prices for great food with very good portions! I suggest the lobster ravioli! It has a full lobster claw on top as a delicious bonus.

I have only had wonderful experiences here. My boyfriend and I have been here many times and every time the food has come out hot and delicious. The soup has always come out steaming and we have both tried a range of their dishes. They have been known to refill drinks without him even noticing. We have gone there for casual nights as well as a special dinner night, such as an anniversary. I would recommend this place to everyone!

Usually very good — both food and service. They seem at their best at busy times — Friday and Saturday nights. Chicken and scallop dishes have been consistently good over the years.

Always a great meal– flavors/execution never disappoint and portions are generous. Service is always attentive, and the back waiters are always topping off water glasses– love that. We’ve enjoyed the Caesar salads, chicken parmigiana, chicken Marsala, lasagna, primavera with chicken, and most of the sweets on the dessert menu. There are plenty of choices on the wine list, and my husband has enjoyed their martinis. Typically we order the same things because we’ve loved them so much, but we wouldn’t be afraid to take a chance with a new-to-us entrée. The ambience is perfect for a date night, dimly lit with candles. And, if you’re lucky, you’ll get to hear the most incredible rendition of Happy Birthday performed by one of the waiters to one of the guests; he’s super talented and it’s a treat for all.

A very fine meal. I had the salmon with a specialty citrus martini. The salmon, pasta, cream sauce were all perfect. The cocktail, was obviously built by a true artist, a great balance of sweet, citrus, bitter and tart and a nice buzz to boot. This is the place for a slow meal, cocktails, and conversations with friends.

Just aweful. Pasta was over cooked, meatballs were not good at all. The risotto was gummy and just plain didn’t taste good. A shrimp dish with sun dried tomatoes was over flowing with sun dried tomatoes but lacked flavor. The marinara is flavorless and the lasagna special was dry. Tiramisu was also sub par. The only reason this place gets a 2 is because of our waitress. She was awesome. Too many other choices in portsmouth to go back here.

Staff is friendly, although of all the times I’ve been here(5) I have yet to be greeted by a hostess actually standing at the station. Not a big deal the rest of the experience far makes up for that small short coming. The food is always exquisite, may I add nice to find Italian food that isn’t frozen pizza from a grocery store or gluten free hippie nonsense. Just real food. Real taste at an acceptable price for the quality. Ly wife and I will continue to come here even though it’s a bit further from us now that we live in Kittery Point versus where we use to live in Portsmouth.

I discovered this restaurant years ago when walking out of the parking garage on Fleet Street and feel so lucky to have found it. They have since moved to Congress Street, in a larger venue, and while I miss the intimacy of a small place, this place allows more diners to eat in a much more comfortable setting. My husband and I do our investing in the area and can never go anywhere else because we have such awesome meals here. While my husband tries a different meal every time we go, I have only ordered one dish and simply can’t stray from it. We usually start with an app(bruschetta is amazing). I order the Chicken Mediterranean(with prunes, pine nuts, leeks, sun dried tomatoes, and orange brandy sauce). I try really hard to eat half of it and take the other half home for a bit of goodness the next day, but lately I simply cannot stop eating the whole dish. I am a very picky eater, and there isn’t one bad thing I can say about this dish. The combination of flavors is absolutely amazing. My husband laughs at me when ordering because every time I tell him the new dish I am going to try but when it comes right down to it, I always order the same dish. We have never gotten dessert… never any room. The wait staff are very professional and gracious. They laugh at my jokes, fill my water glass every time it gets low, sometimes convince me to have a second glass of wine(which I KNOW will make me car sick on the drive home… but don’t fault them– they don’t know), and are very attentive, without being overbearing. I LOVE it!!!

We had a really great experience here a few weeks back. Service was great, food quality was great and entrees and apps were tasty and fresh. I love the special dipping oil and warm bread the started us off with. Nice wine selection, friendly place. I always enjoy when a restaurant cares enough to use tablecloths like Café Mediterraneo does. Non fussy just clean, cozy and good Italian food.

Lovely overall experience. Lobster ravioli was truly delightful, not too heavy, beautiful colorful fresh ravioli. We sat at the bar, bartender was helpful, fun and professional. Reservations are a must, this place fills up and the bar is reserved seating. Prices are fair.

A few girlfriends and I decided to check this place out for restaurant week, and it was very good! They offered a great menu with wine pairings, and the gelato was amazing! Authentic Italian cuisine with an upscale atmosphere, it is definitely a place i will return in the future.

Our first dining experience at Café Mediteraneo was a disappointing 2 stars. However, it is possible that the restaurant was experiencing some temporary issues. Our party of nine was seated promptly. The restaurant appeared organized and clean. The dinner menu, while relatively small, had a decent selection of your core Italian favorites. The friendly waiter took our drink and appetizer order without delay. Up to this point it had been a good experience. Our drinks came promptly. However, nothing else came for approximately 45 minutes. The waiter acknowledged the kitchen was taking longer than usual. After about an hour, the entrees were delivered. When asked about the appetizers(i.e., garlic shrimp, calamari) the waiter acknowledged that appetizers were still not ready so we simply cancelled the appetizers. The entrees were generally ok but not at all tastier than comparable peers. The waiter did deliver the calamari compliment of the house. All in all, the wait time was a significant factor that lowered my customer experience score for this restaurant. I provided constructive feedback to the waiter regarding the wait time. He responded that it was usually better. Perhaps this was a glitch such as a shortage of kitchen staff, cookware or dining ware. If these time delays are in fact systemic issues I hope the owner is responsive to customer feedback. Reputation and brand is important for any successful business.

It was a pleasure to find that Café Mediterraneo offers the rare opportunity to enjoy quality Italian cuisine. Italian food is one of my favorites. I’ve had a lot of bad Italian, and a lot of average Italian. I also spent nearly three years working in an Italian restaurant! After two consecutive dinners at Café Mediterraneo, I was really impressed to discover that each experience was a positive one. I was only in Portsmouth for three nights, but I could’ve happily dined here for all three! We had a linguine putenesca, a caesar salad, and gnocchi with tomato sauce(the gnocchi was cooked perfectly). Each dish was delicious, the service was great(even on a busy Saturday night), and the wine selection was excellent(I had a glass of the Sella & Mosca Carignano both nights). We also ordered a Blood Orange Margarita which was very well-made. We had no reservation but were welcomed without question(and without a wait!). I would definitely recommend this restaurant if you like good, solid italian food.
