Second time there. I am a bit of a Chinese food snob. Have tried Wongs, Shandong etc. depending if I want more authentic vs American-Chinese. This place is decent. Less Americanized. The people are nice and quick. Shrimp with mushrooms in brown sauce. Vegetable chow mein. Both good. They charge for white rice but offer brown or white. Going to try other stuff in the menu. This will be my go to for Chinese close by.

My boyfriend and I ALWAYS get the sesame chicken. We were in a rush and got the order to-go. It was delicious. We love this place!

I can’t really judge a Chinese restaurant from my one experience. I was in the area and ordered beef fried rice, and it was done when I arrived a few minutes later. I’ll have to come back and maybe have lunch there or something to give a better opinion. The fried rice was not the best, but I did pick up some almond cookies that were on the counter and they were pretty good.

I’d give them a 5 but their prices are a little on the high side imo so they lose a for that otherwise this place is the jam! Their food is hella good! The latest thing we had was their general tsos chicken. It had just the right amount of bite and was packed with flavor!!! This is hands down my favorite dish I’ve had here so far. We’ve also had their kung pao, low mein, Mongolia beef and sweet and sour pork which were all also very good. Nothing was too salty and serving sizes are generous. This is our go to for Chinese in Portland so far. Seating is plenty and service here is top notch. They really take care of their customers. They never let our water get too low which is always a plus in my book. They checked up on us just enough without being a bother. Their hot chilli sauce was good as was their spicy mustard

Very yummy. Loved that they separated the sweet & sour sauce from the chicken so it’s fresh when you get home!!!

I love Zien Hong! Not only are they my, «Jews eat Chinese for Christmas» go-to spot for me and my fellow heebs, they are always great with to-go orders, friendly service, and it’s wonderful that they are open so late. One of my absolute staples!

Some of my favorite Chinese food in Portland. Service is fast and the food is always consistently good. The brown rice is always cooked perfectly. The wanton soup has handmade wantons, fantastic meatballs.

If you’re looking for Chinese that’s authentic but not the best, this will do! You’ll come out feeling satisfied but not overly excited to come back. Feeling: meh!

I highly recommend this place for Chinese food. The food is not only good, but their customer service is above and beyond. Tina(I think) made sure we were happy customers. She gave me an extra Thai tea and they delivered our food to our car. Such nice people!

If you’re hankering for some late night Chinese food: GOHERE. I have been looking for some good pepper salted for awhile, many places have fallen in quality(read my hoho review) but Zien Hong still keeps the original recipe and never disappoints! Portion for squid is definitely you pay for what you get! This place does get insanely busy on Fridays and Saturdays call ahead for to-go.

Aside from some of the good reviews I read prior to checking this place out, I’ve heard from folks who’ve gone here for many years say that they think it may have changed ownership due to the recent decline in the quality/taste of dishes they’ve had here in the past. With this said, they definitely do not have the best General Tso Chicken, not even close. They also do not have the aforementioned delicious Sesame Shrimp, unless breaded, deep fried, and heavily laden with some type of brown sauce is your idea of delicious. And the pan fried noodles… burnt. Broccoli, unedible. The staff was super friendly, courteous, and awesome — but the food, sadly, was not.

If you are planning on eating here defiantly get the Spring rolls they are amazing. The pepper salted squid should not be skipped over it is a very good choice. I recommend eating here I have been coming back for over 20 yrs now and I would say it’s the best in Portland for Chinese food. Side note what place isn’t to expensive to eat !!! Don’t listen to reviews, eat here.

Pretty much your average Chinese takeout restaurant. I love the green beans but 7.50 for a lunch portion of just that and rice is a little steep. It seems some of the entrees that are not prepared in some kind of sauce can come out fairly bland. I’ve had better soups at cheap buffets :/

This place gets a lot of points just for being open late. If you’re hungry after 9 the area has sparingly few options. It’s under $ 10, but just barely. Also, rice is extra.

If you’re looking for an extensive menu of americanised Chinese food and regularly consume 8,000 calories in a sitting, like some of the previous reviewers, you’ll hate this place. Their menu is trilingual– Vietnamese, Chinese, and English. This is a tell-tale sign that food is going to be authentic, as native Chinese and Vietnamese speakers are expected to enjoy the food and are thus accommodated with the printing of the menus. I am always excited when I walk into a restaurant and notice I’m the only patron speaking English. I know I’ve successfully avoided americanised food at that point! I think it’s really unfortunate when somebody goes to a restaurant one time, has a little bit too much oil in their food, and then complains about the menu being apathetic and disappointing their menu is, in fact, quite varied! It lacks many deep fried disgusting dishes, sure– but this isn’t a «Chinese restaurant» that serves Chinese food with American flair, nor do they claim to be. If you’re looking for more-breading-than-meat deep-fried MarFar chicken, don’t come here. If you’re looking for delicious, healthy, stirfried options that you have probably never tried before and are sure to find delight In, come here. I had the ginger chicken and it was absolutely delicious. I can’t wait to come back and try many more dishes– lemongrass chicken is next. I also love the eclectic variety of Asian dishes, not just Chinese food. I woke up the next day feeling quite refreshed even though I made the mistake of having a little bit later of a meal then I should’ve. Sometimes after eating heavily processed or MSG waiting food, this process of waking up after a late meal is not so pleasant … Not the case here. This place would’ve been 4 stars for me if it weren’t for the fact that actually offer brown rice, a healthy and delicious and underserved alternative to white rice.

Oh the Pepper Shrimp is awesome here. I’ve tried other dishes and it’s just OK. But that Pepper Shrimp dish is worth the visit alone. My favorite Chinese restaurant in PDX is still Pure Spice. on my list for good take out spots…

Zien Hong ultimately has no special place among Chinese food. In Portland, this place is just a needle in a haystack. I went and I shared beef chow fun and the house special chow mein. Both entrees came about twelve minutes after ordering. The food tasted fairly good and the sauces worked very well. The chow fun noodles weren’t as thick as elsewhere and they had a mostly good texture. All the meat was crisp. Both dishes were still heavily dominated by vegetables and sprouts, so some corners were cut. The chow mein noodles were extremely thin and about average. The bill was $ 24, about an average price but not too noticeable. I could have had the same food, if not better food elsewhere in Portland, or any medium-sized West Coast city is certainly not short of Chinese options. We have a large Chinese population and many of the neighborhoods will offer competing dishes inside a similar vicinity. I shrug my shoulder, but not in a bad way because nothing stood out as hideous. If you want a reliable Chinese lunch, Zien Hong will likely work.

Average food, but great service! I got the chef’s special chow mein with pan fried noodles. The meat and vegetables were perfectly cooked, firm but not crisp and definitely not overcooked/mushy. The noodles were slightly overcooked(al dente) which is not good for these types of noodles(basically, they are top ramen type noodles) and the flavor of the noodles was bland. On the plus side, the sauce they sautéed the veggies in had a lot of garlic, so that added flavor. I was in the neighborhood, so I decided to eat here based solely on the Unilocal reviews. The restaurant was clean, the hostess/server was friendly and the food only took about 10 minutes.

Is it me or with all the great international cuisine in this town that Chinese food got left behind? Yes, I come from the east coast and the Chinese food there differs big time. Why can’t the restaurants have egg drop soup??? Is that a hard one to find here? I’ve seen egg flower soup and I’m not crazy about it. Chinese food is just different here. I will admit Shandong has pretty good food but so far everything else has been middle of the road, including here. The prices are good especially the lunch specials from 11 – 3. Most all the items were around $ 7. I ordered Mongolian beef and it was decent. There were hot peppers in it but it wasn’t spicy. I asked for it spicy. There was plenty of meat and onions, both green and yellow. I thought it odd that there were also vermicelli noodles as well. I had the option of brown rice. The food was ok but a little bit bland for me. I will keep trying to find some great Chinese food here, it’s gotta be around in this foodie town.
