Von Dubinhaus Shepherds

Paul is an incredible dog trainer who truly cares about happiness and success in the household. We hired Paul a little over a year ago to help us with our rescue dog Tobi, a Jack Russell /​Chihuahua mix. He had been incredibly mistreated in his previous home and was overly aggressive as a result. Within the first few weeks of owning Tobi, he attacked a family member resulting in an ER visit with stitches. We didn’t know if we could train Tobi out of such monstrous behavior.
We did our research and decided to call Von Dubinhaus. Paul made time immediately, seeing us multiple times the first week and continuing to make extra time the weeks and months following. If we had a question or concern he always answered our calls and texts. He not only worked on Tobi’s aggression, but on his socialization and basic training as well. He gave our family the tools we needed to be successful.
Today we are proud to say that Tobi is doing great, so well in fact we recently adopted another dog! Thank you so much Paul for not only caring about our family, but becoming part of it as well.

I drove 6hrs. one way to purchase a young beautiful 14 month old rescued female German Shepherd from this business. I was told the dog was abandoned and abused. I was also told that a woman who purchased this dog returned her because she had another dog that this dog did not get along with. Shortly after arriving I noticed the dog had a problem with her hips that was not revealed until that time. The owner said he did not notice this until that very moment. I was told they had the dog for approx. 4 months and that the owner trained GSD’s for 16 years. He immediately lowered the price for the dog. I was also taken back by the way the owner yelled at the dog and actually called her derogatory names. Taking this dog was a mistake on my part but I was determined to leave with a dog as I had another 6hr. drive home to make. Allowing me to take her was a mistake on his part. He did say that it was not normal for them to release a dog after only one visit. A couple of weeks after having the dog, my brother came to visit with his wife and our mother. The dog immediately became aggressive toward my brother and his wife. They have owned GSD’s for 20 years and have two of them currently. My brother was able to bond quickly with the dog but over the two day period the dog was quite aggressive towards his wife to the point they did not feel comfortable staying in my home if the dog was not crated. During their visit, the dog bit me and punctured my finger when I tried to take a piece of paper away from her. This was not a playful bite. After thinking it over and talking with my brother, I sent pictures of the bite to the owner and contacted him to let him know that I didn’t believe that continuing on with the dog was an option for me and that I was not going to make another 12hr. trip to return the dog to him. After much discussion, I agreed to meet him halfway as long as I was refunded my money. A day later he contacted me to let me know he did not have the money and that he would make the drive to pick her up. After thinking about the entire experience, I decided it was in the best interest of the dog to find a better situation for her rather than return her to this business. This whole experience was a big mistake. Not only did I make a twelve hour round trip to purchase her but, now I have a dog that Is very unpredictable and more than likely will require some kind of expensive surgery that I can not afford. I DO NOT RECOMMEND THIS BUSINESS.

Paul is a wonderful, patient dog trainer. My 7 year old Shepard mix, Savannah, had serious socialization issues. I couldn’t take her out in public because she would become incredibly aggressive around other dogs. About 10 weeks ago, I hired Paul to help me get Savannah socialized, and in that time, the work he has done has been amazing. Savannah can now be around the dogs at his facility without being muzzled or needing a correction (citronella) collar. I am very grateful for the the hard work and dedication Paul has shown to Savannah. He is truly a gifted trainer.

Working with Paul and his team of shepherds has totally transformed my relationship with my German shepherd! I was fortunate to be referred to Von Dunbinhaus Shepherds by a friend two months after rescuing a 1 &½ year old GSD who had an obvious lack of any training or socialization prior to adoption. After beginning our work with Paul my new friend became a whole new creature and I am grateful for all he has taught me. With equal emphasis on training the dog and teaching the owner, Paul has taught me how to interact with my dog in ways that are fun and enjoyable for us both. Paul is friendly, professional, and very well educated and experienced with this special breed. Additionally, he is consistently accessible and available to provide support, advice, and guidance. I am extremely happy with the services he continues to provide for us!

We were referred to Paul via a friend who is a clent of his. We were and continue to be extremely pleased with his knowledge, professionalism, and overall ability to work well with our 8 month old dog, and, more importantly, incorporate us as the pet owners into the training, and, over time through consistent visits with Paul, achieve the desired results with our pet. It makes a big difference when you can see the true passion that a trainer has for his or her job, and their absolute, true and genuine love and compassion for the animal. This is what I saw in Paul from the beginning, and he continues to genuinely care for our dog beyond simply our training time with him, helping us with health issues, giving sound advice, etc… He has noticed things about our pet, that, if gone unnoticed would definitely have ended up being greater health issues. Again, THIS GUY GENUINELY LOVES AND CARES FOR THE PET. he is a great, interesting, knowledgeable individual, and his training sessions truly have helped incredibly. I would highly recommend Von Dubinhaus shepherds and trainng to almost anybody, especially any sort of troubled or aggressive dog and owner. He is basically an expert on German Shepherd as well, which is why we sought his training in the first place, being that our dog is a G. shepherd. His availability and shedule has always Been accomadating enough that we have NEVER had any issues with being fit in or scheduled for a session, which has been a big plus. If in need, DO seek consultation, as, you will not be let down.

I cannot express to you how happy we are with Paul and Von Dubinhaus Dog training. First a little background. We have 2 dogs that like each other a lot but do not like other dogs very much. This dog aggression is why we chose Paul in the first place. From extensive research he is one of the only trainers in Portland who will work with any type of aggressive dog. We started with the evaluation where Paul took the time to really work with our dogs and see the traits we were trying to fix. One of the best parts of the training is that Paul has a ton of dogs around who can work with your dogs. This becomes really important as you start to socialize the dogs. At the end of the evaluation Paul gave us the fee for lifetime training for the 2 dogs. This was about 50% of what others would have charged. We have been using the training almost weekly for about a year and have seen huge improvements. There is no pressure to buy anything else. Please remember this is not Petco training. This is real dog training for real problems and you have to be willing to put in as much work as he does to see results, but if you are willing to work you will be very happy with the results. My two dogs are now pleasant to take on walks and can actually play with other dogs. Again I cannot express to you how happy we are with our decision to use Von Dubinhaus dog training.

I have been working with Paul (of Von Dubinhaus Shepherds) for 4 months. Cleo, my 1 ½ yr old pitt mix, was dog-​aggressive and could not be trusted near any dog other than our goldendoodle. She would fence-​fight, lunge and snarl at other dogs and I coudn’t control her. Fearing a lawsuit or worse, my girlfriend and I were about 3 weeks away from getting rid of Cleo.
I contacted Paul as a last resort, hearing that he specialized with extremely aggressive dogs. Paul scheduled a meeting that week and started working with Cleo and I. Over the past 4 months I’ve learned a great deal about dog behavior through Paul and have not only became a better dog-​handler, but my dog has made enormous progress. Cleo no longer lunges at dogs, fence-​fights, pulls on the leash or growls at children. She plays with Paul’s shepherds and I see progress weekly with her behavior. My neighbors are all commenting about how sweet she is and how much she’s changed. We still have training to do but I am amazed with how well she has responded to Paul’s training techniques.
Paul was fair with his pricing and generous with his time. He uses many different training techniques but is ALWAYS humane and adaptive to the needs of the dog and owner, continually emphasizing praise and positive reinforcement of good behaviors. I trust and recommend him unreservedly.
