The Whole Bowl Hollywood Bowl

I can’t believe this is healthy! Delicious, wholesome bowls. Perfect portions and very filling.

I went to The Whole Bowl today hoping for a healthy, filling meal and instead was grossed out by what was served to me. I was eating a big bowl and heard a «ting» against my plastic fork and realized my fork was hitting two exceptionally long hairs (they weren’t mine) that I pulled out of the bottom of my bowl. It was pretty disgusting. I immediately lost my appetite. If Whole Bowl is going to serve food, maybe have workers tie their hair back or better yet, wear a hairnet. I was so grossed out that I couldn’t finish my meal. Won’t be going back ever. It’s too expensive for what it is anyway.

I’m not sure which came first, Whole Bowl or Café Yumm, but they are almost exactly the same. At both places you get a bowl of rice, beans, cheese, cilantro, olives, sour cream, avocado and some sauce.
I give the edge to Café Yumm because the sauce in their Hot N Jazzy bowl is amazing. The sauce in the Whole Bowl bowl is very mustardy and sort of bland. The rest of the ingredients are fresh and overall the meal is good but not great.

The guy that works here is super nice! The bowl is just plain old comfort food. Satisfying and healthy and only puts you out $ 5.50! But you must know that is it. Just one bowl is what they offer. Clever!

This place seems like only in Portland type. Come on, its a trailer on the side of a refurbished gas station made into a coffee shop. I’ve walked by several times and not being from Portland, thought — strange crazy person in a trailer. A neighbor told me its delicious and I was surprised. I just finished eating the only item they serve — a vegetarian bowl, large or small, thats it. Its absolutely delicious and I’ve eaten more meat than cannibals in the old amazon jungle. I look forward to returning many more times. $ 6.00

Whole Bowl may in fact be lunch perfection. Thank goodness they’ve expanded because lord knows that line at the Pearl was begging for it. And sure, sure, chips, cookies, drinks, locally baked treats, but here’s what everyone is really in line for:
–brown rice
–red and black beans
–avocado
–salsa
–black olives
–sour cream
–cheddar
–cilantro
–Tali sauce (think: garlic+lemon-ish)
–magic
I think it’s really the magic that pushes it over the edge, because in the same strange way that a sandwich made by someone else always tastes better, the same goes for Whole Bowl. Simply combining these ingredients is just messy and expensive, and something you’ll easily pay someone $ 6 to do for you in the future.

It’s Whole Bowl, it’s down the street from my house, it’s five stars.
If you don’t know what Whole Bowl is, it’s a bowl full of natural goodness that will warm your belly, mind, and soul. If one were to eat an entire bowl for each meal of each day of their lives, they’d probably look like Gisele Bundchen and feel like they were married to Tom Brady.
The bowl contains rice, beans, cheese, sour cream, olives, some magical yellow sauce, cilantro, some other stuff, and avocado scooped right before your very eyes. No meat, but that’s okay; it’s excellent stuff, is very filling, and only $ 6.00. They have a «bambino» size, but it’s not as great a value and probably wouldn’t lead to marriage with Tom Brady.
Yes, I am a straight and happily married male.
Other notes that have nothing to do with your sexiness or love life: service is fast and friendly, and they’ve got a bunch of add-​ons available — chips, cookies, soda, a dozen different hot sauces (I’m partial to the chipotle Cholula I’ve got at home).

It’s 3PM and you are just barely awake. Your vision is spotty, but then again so is your memory — you do, however, remember the moment last night where you nearly spilled your beer into your whiskey while fumbling to grab the tequila shot you were being offered. That was a turning point in your night.
You are haggard.
Chelsea is looking damnably chipper by comparison. You don’t consider yourself a particularly violent person, but you had some profoundly evil thoughts about retribution for her decision to wake you up and take you to lunch this morning.
«This’ll be the *perfect* hangover food,» she assured you on the ride over. You glared at her through slitted eyes and let out your breath, slowly, through your nose.
Now you’re blinking in the sunlight, shifting uncomfortably back and forth in line for the foodcart. You stare at the sign without comprehension. Soon it’ll be your turn to order, and what are you going to say?
«What’s good here again?» You mutter to Chelsea.
«They only serve one thing, and it’s the *best* thing. Just get the regular bowl.»
Okay, you can do that. She’s paying, so that’s nice. You grit your teeth and step up to the window.
Well that was easy.
It smells good. It smells really good, and right up until this point, you didn’t think anything would ever smell good again. You didn’t think anything would ever be good again. You certainly didn’t envision yourself chowing down on a bowl packed with beans, rice, olives, salsa, avocado, cream, cheese, cilantro, and some sort of magical golden-​hued sauce. You’re not even the slightest bit vegetarian, but you have to concede that there’s no need for meat here. There’s no room, besides — the little $ 6 bowl is stuffed like a christmas stocking.
You blink at the now-​empty container, and glance up at Chelsea who’s looking on approvingly. She proffers a bottle of water.
«See? Feel better?»
You try to muster up the wide-​ranging hatred for existence that your hungover prompted earlier… everything is still a little wonky, you haven’t exactly recovered, but… shit. You *do* feel a little better, don’t you?

Hard to give a Whole Bowl location 5 stars but the folks here are that cool.

The congenial guy working at the cart directed me to the outdoor tables and chairs around the corner of Wholesome Blends coffee shop for Whole Bowl customers. It’s a great option to have if I want to snarf up a bowl before continuing with my errands through the neighborhood. Woo hoo!
I do crave all of the toppings, especially the avocado, cilantro, olives, and black/​red beans. The tali sauce is lemony and garlicky which I love, but it can be a bit strong for little kids (my daughter prefers her bowl without sauce).
On the official website, Whole Bowl claims that their one-​dish wonder is «nut, wheat, hydrogenated oil and guilt free». Can it get any more Portlandia than that? It’s a good thing. :)
When I get the Big Bowl to share with my little one, every last delicious bit is devoured.

You haven’t tried the whole bowl yet? What is wrong with you? Don’t answer that, for I too was once like you. Then finally a location opened up in my neighborhood.
If you are looking to get your feet wet with your first whole bowl experience this is the location to try. All the yummy goodness of the other cards without the wait.
So what is the whole bowl experience? Well as they say it’s like eating a hug. Does that not explain it enough? Well here’s the deal it’s all kind of goodies including red and black beans, brown rice, cilantro, fresh avocado, salsa, sour cream, and a tali sauce that brings it all together.
This perfect combination of ingredients living in harmony makes you wonder why there is not world peace.

Whole love! Warm delicious beans and rice with secret sauce and delicious toppings too boot. You can get black olives, cheese, sour cream, avocado and some other yummy stuff. It’s my favorite grab and go food. It’s filling, delectable, nourishing and vegetarian. For $ 5.50 you can’t go wrong. There is more than just this location. There is a few around town.

had a great first experience there today. I didn’t even realize it was a new location, because the guy working there seemed so friendly and accustomed to the whole bowl vibe.
i loveee the hot sauce selection, and that for 5.50 I can get myself a delicious vegan or vegetarian meal that is filling
